And I think the album is hit or miss because her fans were looking for sad girl music when she had her comeback. Her coming with an upbeat 80s sound was not what they were looking for because some see her solely as an artist to get emo 2, + u guys were right most of this album is about her relationship with being an artist esp since she was not going to come back to music and dropped this after a 3yr hiatus

i never really looked too much into mitski's life even as an avid fan of her music, but watching this and listening along to the album with rico and primo with the context of her wanting to retire from the music industry... damn that really puts a different spin on things! and with the land is inhospitable and so are we, im so glad she didnt retire.
@despair7479
@despair7479 Месяц назад
You’re absolutely right. Which I don’t understand in general, I think the album captures a perfect balance of edge/darkness and the 80s pop culture vision. It’s ok tho, it’s everyone else’s losses. Laurel Hell is a beautiful art piece.
@shiftingbye4940

Mitski was a film student for more lore about working for the knife! She didn't pursue it but its obvious in her mvs and I think the knife is just government/modern society.
@kendall_al

56:40 That's totally true. Laurel Hell was a very divisive album when it was released mainly because its sound is very different from Mitski's past albums. Lush and Retired from Sad are very piano-based, with more "obscure" sounds, while Bury Me at Makeout Creek and Puberty 2 are more rock-punk and guitar-based. Some people say that Laurel Hell ain't that good because of the overuse of the 80s sounds and the usage of synths kinda misses her sad-girl image. It's funny to me cuz Be the Cowboy already had many synths and it was such an acclaimed album. Another important piece of context is that Mitski went into hiatus for 2-3 years after releasing Be the Cowboy, so Laurel Hell was expected to be her big comeback, and people probably expected something more similar to Puberty 2 or BMAMC, but instead was very different from her previous albums. Personally, I love Laurel Hell. Imo it's great to hear Mitski revolve around different genres and it just feels kinda wrong how underrated Laurel Hell is!

i always think of her albums as like twins. for example lush with rfsncib, bmamc with puberty 2, and be the cowboy with laurel hell. i guess its bcus of the type of music given within each albums

@@pinkupongs I completely agree! I believe Mitski once said that she usually works on two albums at the same time so that's why they seem to be "twins"

One important thing about The Only Heartbreaker is that she wanted to portray a relationship where she (or the listener) is the only one messing up bevause they’re the only one trying. While the partner isn’t. She said this in an interview, and I definitely looked into it lyrically and I think I only found one instance bc she also said she tried to make it more of a subtle or deeper layer. In the “I'll be the water main that's burst and flooding // You'll be by the window, only watching in” is the lyric I think might be somewhat overlooked but a perfect example where she’s broken and causing flooding, but the s/o is merely watching, not worried, not looking to fix anything

it departs from her usual sound in some ways for sure but i think it's an amazing album - for sure was surprised when i first heard it bc it was simply not what i was expecting but the mixing and all the sounds she uses are as always amazing. quickly became one of my fav albums of hers - if u listen to her albums in order u can really tell how the quality is gradually getting better and better, don't get me wrong all her albums sound amazing but she's definitely going UP in that aspect with every new release. u can really see her growth both musically and thematically bc she's been doing this for a while which is really cool!

The reason this album was a hit or miss was due to a few factors, This was released after Mitskis 3 year hiatus because she had one more album with her label she was with but after she planned on quitting/retiring. Another fact is some mitski fans are so used to her acoustic style albums like Puberty 2 and BMAMC. This album was more spunky, upbeat and a drastic change from her other pieces of art!!

I found this I think best sums up the meaning of the album name and makes sense with the themes of the songs “Laurel Hell” is named for the rhododendron thickets of southern Appalachia. Campers who have come into contact with these thickets, which are referred to colloquially as laurel hells, describe the blooms as beautiful but the branches as thorny and extremely difficult to maneuver around. Stardom is Mitski’s laurel hell: she loves writing and performing music, but the sacrifices that come with giving herself completely to her art have the potential to destroy her.

WOW I WAS SO EXCITED FOR THIS IM GLAD U GUYS LIKED IT a few things: - I think a couple reasons why a lot of mitski fans didnt like this album that much was because it came after a 3 yr hiatus and it didnt rly fit the sad girl music people wanted to see from her. also, what I see most people complaining about is the production (people say its over-produced, whatever the heck that means. I personally think Patrick did an amazing job) - also, for the only heartbreaker, that song is about how when only one person in a relationship is trying, only that person can make mistakes. here's what mitski said about it in an interview: "[It is about] the person always messing up in the relationship, the designated Bad Guy who gets the blame. It could simply be about that, but I also wanted to depict something sadder beneath the surface, that maybe the reason you’re always the one making mistakes is because you’re the only one trying." - my ranking: laurel hell, puberty 2, BTC, TLIIASAW, and BMAMC - congrats on your new space and primo im sorry about your past relationship :"( - id be interested in seeing your reaction to Conan grays new album found heaven!

Retired from Sad, New Career in Business 6. Lush Tbh they're pretty much on par with each other, but trying to be more "objective" (using quotes since there's nothing more subjective than music) I'd say The Land is her most solid project so far, while some tracks from Lush are a bit boring Puberty 2 was the best before the release of The Land imo, great songs

We know you weren't a big fan of lana, but i think you should give her another chance. You should do Born to Die, Lust For Life or NFR. her most upbeat catchy album is Born to die, Lust for life is more hiphop influenced as it has Asap and carti on it. NFR is a fan and critic favorite, people deem it as her best, however it does have a 8 minute song but its perfect.
