Great video Mike. As long as the floor is relatively level the top will find its own level. You will only need to adjust the top bubble first time to 'calibrate' to the tyre holder.

This works! I just widened the pin socket. Didnt touch the pin. Moves freely and centers at different clock positions. Cheers

I did the same.. I used long 5.5mm drillpit. Works great now.

A point for clarification. Most if not all of the tire websites say the valve in the heavy spot in the rim and the yellow dot being the lightest on the tire. I did not know about the adjustability of the bubble part. Thanks for the video and the tips on how to tweak my new bubble balancer. Like another person I could not balance my 12 trailer tires as it wouldn't compress the springs low enough to contact the cone.

I saw another way to modify this since watching your video. The fella placed a large ball bearing at the bottom of the part with the bubble and instead of sitting on a point, he ground it down to a flat surface. It seemed to work very well. His complaint was that the sharp tip didn't stay sharp for very long.
@MarcBchannel
@MarcBchannel 7 месяцев назад
I thought about doing the ball bearing but tried this out first because I'm cheap. Works way better now. I didn't touch the pin just widened the pin socket. Moves freely now and centers repeatedly. Didn't want to sharpen the pin and weaken it🤙

Interesting contraption Mike and even better after your modification. You learn something new every day - didn't know about the yellow and red dots.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations Год назад
Now you do! On modern tyres and rims they are better balanced than the old days - so by putting the dots to the valve there should be hardly any weight - however I am not so sure if this will be the case with tyre pressure monitoring

My local tyre shop still uses this, needs a heavy wheel, small lightweight wheels are not always enough to depress the springs to centre the wheel/tyre. I hate watching them balance my wheels as it always looks too simple..... They tell me modern tyres are now so well balanced due to manufacturing methods, providing you put the tyre on the wheel with the corresponding marks on the tyre lined up with the valve.....they are nearly always spot on. One of my wheels didnt even need a balance weight!!!

Good info shared by a Top Bloke. Thanks Mike. Have only just attempted to repair a wheel rim on my spare that was damaged a few years back. Removed and replace the tyre on the rim (a first for me) and not too bad.. but the rim is leaking where the repair was made.. looks like a new wheel is needed although there is a old can of P.38 that is winking at me so maybe I should at least to attempt to maybe make things right just for shizzles and giggles…

That was a good demonstration Mike I thought about one of those but was a bit wary kwik fit here in Guisbro just put me two tyres on wrong for the test. now I've drove it and looked at it too late to go back and nowadays its not cheap even second hand tyres cost a bomb

Yes, tyres here are expensive now - and getting balanced? $14+ tax each for a 14 inch rim - so thick end of $60 I was impressed at the balancer I must admit - thought it would just fall over - but driving the Yaris was fine - you need to take your time though!
@squadmeta
@squadmeta Год назад
It might vary with tyre brands but as I remember it the red dot is meant to match with the low point marking on the rim. If the rim isn’t marked then just align the yellow dot to the valve, I imagine more important these days with tyre pressure monitoring gizmos. Love the balance machine, simple tools and knowledge wins the day.

Got one of those in the shed but mine was ok and didn’t need modifications. Do you remember those old balance machines that you sat on? You put the wheel on the car and with it still jacked up you sat on this machine that had a steel wheel in the bottom and shoved it forward into the car tyre . I think the was a sensor that clipped on the bottom arm and bit of tape you stuck on the tyre. They were good because they balanced the wheel and the hub. Not seen one for years

I have been balancing my tyres for years now by adding coolant, It works great. I have a 6 ton truck, d22 4wd, and suzuki swift. I have do this to all of them and get even wear all the way to the wire every time. I live in Australia so it never gets cold enough to freeze.

I just noticed further down in the comments that you said you used to use antifreeze. I too have experienced the scary corner thing, but I found if you add more antifreeze (coolant) you can remedy this problem..

Back in the 60s I run a 7ton ford flat. I moved scrap metal so had to go into scrap-yards which gave plenty on punchers. An old trick that I used was to blow a pint of milk into the inner tube and re-blow up the tyre. After a while the milk would go like cream or soft cheese which would seal any slow punchers, sometimes I would find that the inner tube was porus due to age and I would do the same with the milk. I never thought of the balancing of the wheel. Now you can buy a sealer which works just like the milk, but is made of P.V.A. glue, try if mixed with water sometime. those days have gone for me now. good luck.

Yes I have - OK on the straights but long sweeping bends is another story as the antifreeze/plastic pellets then to run off-centre I have tried the glass beads too, but they tend to turn to powder - and if your air that you use to inflate the tyre is damp, in winter you will have a fixed weight in the tyre - not good Some big rigs here use golf balls!

the cavity at the top is for grease - with the weight of the wheel maybe the pin as designed is sensitive enough.

My only argument is when you sharpen down the pin you'll weaken its structural strength. This will become more obvious under heavy load. It's better to drill out the receptacle to a wider hole until it stops making contact to the pin shoulder.

Should work fine - I just bought this www.amazon.ca/dp/B08XQJBL3N?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 it is 60mm diameter and magnetic so much easier to read - the idea is to set the machine to zero using the original bubble and then with a bit of help from JP, make a steel sleeve to slip over the original and stick this to it
@alannock1358
@alannock1358 Год назад
You would probably struggle to get wire wheels balanced by the average tyre shop, why? The centre part of the wire wheel has a true taper on the inner surface of the inside of the wheel, and a true surfaced taper on the OUTER part of the outside of the wheel centre. Hard to explain, but study how the spinner/nut contacts the outer taper. Garages use opposing inner tapers so a wire wheel will wobble like a clowns car, giving a false impression of a buckled wheel. This bubble balancer only contacts the true inner taper, and should be ideal. If you use a tyre shop, be sure that they understand wires. Good luck.
@richbinaz

Just for giggles... next time you have the tires off, try the rim on the balancer (no tire) to find the rim heavy spot. Something else to do if you have the time... Take one of your balanced wheels off and put it on the balancer. Is it still balanced? If you lift the wheel and turn it 90° and put it back on the balancer, is it still balanced?
@BritannicaRestorations

Actually, I did change my summer tyres for used winter ones the other week and I took off all the weights on the rims - popped the used winters on and checked them - EVERY single tyre was perfect! No need for any balance weights! So, I thought it could be wrong = took the Yaris to 130 km/hr and not one singe shake or vibration!

Hey Mike, a slight correction: The 4 springs do not support any of the weight of the wheel. All of the weight is supported by the center cone. The 4 springs make sure that the cone is centered as you put the wheel on.

Very informative! Do you know much about balance beads? The reason I ask is I have an old VW (as well as a IIa) and the old VW wheels don't fit on any of the new dynamic balance machines.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations Год назад
I have used balance beads (or BB pellets or antifreeze) before, and they do work well - - - except when you go round bends at speed! If you can imagine the beads etc tend to centrifugally go to the furthest point of the tyre - when you go round a bend they tend to go at angles, if you can get where I am going, and not in the centre of the tyre and can cause temporary imbalance. I used to use antifreeze all the time in the tyres, but it could get scary on fast bends - but maybe in an old VW it may not be a problem lol!

But dynamic balancers are not 100% accurate and the weights come as lumps of about 6 grammes, so it's never going to be precise.
