Tyre removal with an old, hard tyre and two badly positioned tyre security bolts for added fun!

This was a job I hadn't really been looking forward to, although I have dealt with similar, many times in the past. This old tyre was very hard and cracked and the security bolts weren't favourably positioned, in fact, I should have probably removed one or both before trying to remove the second bead and no doubt other methods are probably available. Nevertheless, the old tyre is off and I hope to follow this clip up with the new tyre being fitted.

With old tyres I have learnt to cut them through rather than struggle. The narrow tyre levers that Royal Enfield originally made are better in my experience than anything else. Well done anyway.

I've been doing this for over 50 years now and it doesn't get any easier. In fact, at 69 years old, I don't have the strength I used to and it's becoming more difficult. The cushion is a good idea; I will have to find one!

Makes me feel better as I too don’t look forward to tyre changing. Took me most of a morning recently to get a very tough tire off one of my bikes, much sweat and bad language, but in the end a sense of achievement.

To be honest, I have not the nerves for that. But great job Paul. I have a good tyre dealer here, the guys always make a good job and my tyres are never that old, that helps.

Whenever changing a tyre..it’s amazing how many folk tell you how to do it…can be a trifle annoying!

I can see you've done that once or twice before Paul. You need a fair bit of strength to do this job as well. I recently saw my arse fitting a new front on my Burgman. Got the tyre off eventually, but couldn't get the new one on, ended up going to my local tyre fitter who put it on for free, in what seemed like no time at all, which made a mockery of all my cursing and cussing. Mind you I'm a fair bit older than you!

Spot on Paul! I've done my fair share of tyre changing from bike up big combine harvester tyres. I reckon every move you made was identical to what my own would be. Keep the tyre bead in the well opposite where you are working. That's the secret folks! There's a perverse satisfaction in doing the job I find.

Well done Paul. I've been racing motocross/scrambles for over 50 years, and have changed hundreds of tyres. I never look forward to it ! I don't know it all, but ive learned a lot. Best things I've learned - make a stand to lift the job up at least 18 inches, if there's two security bolts take one out, always use water on and off, NEVER EVER use fairy liquid ! especially when re fitting (you'll never get rid of it or stop the tyre creeping and dangerous on a road bike tyre ), enlarge the valve hole to allow the valve some scope to move a bit, just in case. Keep up the interesting videos 👍

Why do we never use soap for getting tyres off the rim only on? Last one I did, on an old Soviet bike with CCCP marked tyres (so imagine how old and crusty those were!) I put fairy liquid on the bead after breaking it down and it practically flew off. Only downside I could see was black manky fingers but soapy too so it washed off easily.

Well done! The last time I did this with an old, hardened tyre and a standard road wheel without security bolts, it took me over an hour.

Removing motorcycle tyres is always great fun. I recall once having some tyre levers that had a 90 degree bend in one end, with a 'hook' machined into the bent end for hooking onto spokes, lessening the number of hands required to position more levers.

I've always changed my own tyres till last month took wheel to a competent mechanic as 50 odd years of riding bikes, (no car), a broken wrist three years ago, dislocated shoulder eighteen months ago let's just say I'm limited to some things now. Years ago went to Weymouth on my crusader, 200 miles in flat rear tyre, I'd patched the tube and the tyre crept around the rim and peeled the patch off, but what could've been worse when I undone the security nut on the tube, the valve immediately moved about 30 degrees. I was told by a competent mechanic the nuts only there to assist in fitting the tube, it should be backed off to the dustcap when tyre inflated, as you don't know if the tyre/valve is creeping round. Nobody else I know believes this but it's true

What I find worrying is every time I go for a mot the so called inspector either said your security nuts are loose, or " I've tightened up the security nuts as they were loose" Simple things people never think about

Tyre Lube Works Wonders for getting tyre's on and off.....avoid washing up liquid.....has salts in it.

I can see how it landed up like that. You start riding offroad and you drop pressures lower and lower as you attempt progressively rougher/slippier terrain. Your bead slips one day and rips the valve out so you fit a rimlock, the logical place to fit it being in the nearest big gap to directly opposite the valve. Everything is fine for a while and you get into even gnarlier stuff, maybe beck sections and deep mud. Pressures drop further in the search for grip and you get another rim slippage. Needs another rimlock. Where do you put this one? As near to opposite the first one as possible so it supports most bead or do you drill two new holes? I'm about at the point of thinking I should have put two rimlocks in my trials bike rear because you can see the bead straining at anything below 6psi... although I'm giving serious consideration to fitting one of those tubliss systems instead so I can run them really low which would use the existing two holes I have.

I laughed out loud….I did the same process on a honda S90 here across the pond not long ago…no security bolts but is was a “bugger” as my cousins from across the pond would say….

Should have used some soapy water ,mind you l had to cut the tyre off before with an angle grinder on my 57 cub

Was thinking hacksaw or angle grinder may have made removal less physical given tyre was cracked and not going back on.

Rim locks uh!!! I was glad when tire rubber got softer and less prone to slip on a uber powerful BSA wheel now LOL! Just did my r60/5 rear tire today the proper width makes all the difference on them. Less width than a starfire LOL!

Paul, if you can genuinely get that tyre off without swearing 'you're a better man than I am Gunga Din' !! - I have honestly only watched the first few seconds and paused the video to type this, but unless you've edited it down 14 minutes and 26 seconds isn't to be sniffed at..

Yep the old rock hard tire [tyre] did not help ! I always removed the security bolt[s] right after the tube for a bit more room/tyre flex.

I punch mine in the only time I took them off forever for road. 150 ooo miles and 30 years never had any new tire slip.
