Have a MD 9600 and I love it! Great radio! Only drawback is it only holds 10,000 contacts. Doesn’t effect me driving down the road. Works great on analog too!
Best radio ive ever owned and is my only used daily radio... Tyt md9600 is Better than the xpr5550e And Xtl5000! I am a radio junkie so I got every icom and Motorola radio ranging from Maxtrac to Apx. I got version 1 and I'm a trucker 48 states. I've had my unit since 2017 and I've never heard the popping sound but 2 times. All you got to do is stay away from proper lines and fuel stations. Just move 10 feet and the sound goes away. Also ... I've talked on mine being all long winded till radio is smoking hot for 7 years every day all day and the darn thing still works great. Doesn't look cheap doesn't feel cheap and functions like a Motorola. Deff not a chinese knock off radio. Dual band dmr with FM and Password protected with all the bells and whistles... Shoot
I have a version 3 radio... The display is really bad unless you are directly in front of the radio. Up high, down low, off to the left or off to the right you cannot read the screen. Take a good look at the screen and you will see its not crisp, much like a 20 year old dot matrix printer. Take a good look, the MFJ orange screen is really crisp and clear and then look at the TYT and see just how bad it is. The audio is fine but when I press the mic transmit button the radio waits almost two seconds before you hear the DMR chirp and your voice starts transmitting. This is not the same problem you are seeing in the video where you cannot key up the button until the the Outline D turns solid. That is called "Group Call Hang time" and what the repeater is doing is keeping the repeater open for a designated period of time so only transmissions in the same talk group will be able to reply. This is useful if you are running several talk groups on a channel and you want to continue a conversation and not have the conversation hijacked by another conversation in a different talk group. In this video Jason was not able to reply because most likely the firmware is messed up by bad firmware programming from the factory. At the date i am writing this they must have fixed it because my radio does not have that problem. Again, I can hit the transmit button and hold it but my radio wont "chirp" and transmit for almost two seconds and the delay is maddening so if you know of a fix please tell me. Lastly, when ever i turn on the radio I get a loud pop out of the EXTERNAL speaker and yes I have the newest firmware. I got the radio on Black Friday for around $175.00 so I will keep it but will not purchase another one and cannot recommend this radio to my ECOM team members. It's a COVID-19 world at this point and I hope everyone is staying safe. Be well Jason and the group.
That PTT delay might be by design because lots of operators do not leave 4 or 5 seconds between overs thus not allowing other operators to disconnect or to announce themselves.
Yeah my issue with this video was that I had loaded a codeplug from the TYT DMR HT I had, and that busy lock wasn't enabled. For some reason it enabled it when loading that same codeplug into the 9600
@@HamRadio2 i loaded a codeplug from a local ham who had a TYT DMR HT, i finily figured out how to turn it off, it took a while to figure out how to do so. for some reason i cant seem to get into many DMR repeaters from my location, im not sure why,
The Wattmeter you're using (MFj-849), does it work accurately when measuring the output of the Digital Signal? I was told Analogue Wattmeter Can't measure Digital Radio output in digital mode...!! What is the output power for each level in Digital mode (From LOW, MED ,MED-High, HIGH)?
This is kinda an old vid, there's other device better than this one in 2023 in same price range (tag)? I mean, this fits my goals but I don't know if there's something else out there. Cheers! (I am folowing a lot of your videos as I am to buy a mobile and a ht radio. I'm like "in a fair afair" with retevis and tyt, wich seems swits better in my budget. )
Excellent video. Thanks. Any update on a way to change the timing of the D and the Inverse D? Was this covered in the manual? What does the manual say the D icon represents? Do the other TYT radios, like the 389,have this "feature"? Regards, Geo, NJ3H
The MD398 is a piece of garbage, it transmits on both timeslots and has been banned on most Repeaters. The "D" is present because of the hangtime, which you can adjust in the CPS. I used my MD2017 codeplug to program the MD9600 radio, and I have no hangtime set, but apparently the CPS changed it without my knowing. It has been corrected now.
speaking of speaker pop...i had an apx7000 with terrible speaker pop! it didn't matter if it was analog, p25, or just the beep from a button being pressed. the speaker pop made me lose faith in apx series radios but then I got an apx6000xe and there is absolutely no speaker pop. not sure if it was hardware or firmware problem.
Yes. The problem was that the codeplug I loaded into this radio, from the MD2017, didn't have Admit Criteria set, but when I loaded it into the MD9600 software, it changed some settings.
Aloha, can you please do a video explaining how to use the GPS option on the MD-9600? I just received mine it is Ver 3.0 (2.01 as you state) but I like how you explain things in your videos, and I purchased this option specifically because i'm a CERT Team Leader on the island of Hawaii, and really need this option. Mahalo
On the TYT 9600 when the code plug is read from the radio and want to make changes to the code plug and then rewrite there is error "The Frequency Range is wrong. I had load the the original code plug and made changes from it and then uploaded it to the 9600 ..
MD-9600 simply because I haven't really had time to play with the CS800D yet (I have one that I really need to dive into) plus the screen on the MD9600 completely destroys the tiny one on the CS800D.
Anybody could check on the pcb of a version 3 md9600, on the pcb it should be written V2.1 on the corner behind the channel knob. Please confirm. Thanks
Hi, congratulations on your videos. I have seen on the screen the TG is displayed, the name, the call sign, city and state. This happens because you have configured them that way or it comes from the factory? I have a V.3 bought in Europe and I would like to be able to receive the global contact base.
I wonder if it has a always admit criteria like the Motorola? I see the feature being usefull Unless you are trying too break in for emergency traffic or trying too check into a net.
It has that setting, yes - but I always keep the admit criteria to either Channel free or Always. It depends on the channel. The real issue, I think, is that the codeplug was changed by the MD9600 software, because I have the exact same codeplug in my MD2017, and it doesn't behave this way.
Yea TYT allows you to import an MD2017 codeplug into the MD9600 software so that you can write the same plug into both radios. I guess their translation isn't working 100% though, since these settings were changed. You can also import an MD380 codeplug into the MD2017, and I don't remember having this problem when I did that.
Anyone have any idea what the serial number difference is? I am guessing that the first two are the Year and the second two are Month example S/N: YYMMx##### mine has an A where the X is located and then what appears to be sequential numbers. This makes sense as I purchased the radio from Grapevine in early 2018 just after this video was released and I know it is a V3 aka HWV 2.01
i just bough this radio. a few things that i want to add to this review that are lacking. 1. Dual watch on this radio is less than useless, if you try and use it the results will be catastrophic. when both A and B monitors have traffic you wont be able to transmit or use the radio. 2. It is not possible to go into the menu when a signal is present on the receiver. 3. Really weird things happen if you run scan and promiscuous mode at the same time. Radio becomes unstable when multiple signals come in. 4. When in promiscuous mode, you cant lock onto the talk group with a single button press, you have to memorize it, and go and manually program in the TG. There are other oddities reported on eham that i find tolerable that i wont mention here. FW version V006.003 CP ver 1.22.
38K views and no comments here in 2 full years. Seems odd. I just got one of these radios and finding ANY useful information regarding Firmware and CPS is incredibly not there non-existent and frustrating. It would be really cool if there were follow up videos or follow up information in the more info part of videos like this, versus what I would call total abandonment. There appears to be NO published location for firmware, hardware version CPS version or ANYTHING. Like the radio came out 4-years ago, This video got 38K views and then just suddenly completely disappeared. No updated or useful links in the video information regarding this radio whatsoever. (but you have links to about everything else possible) Not that this is your job or expected but man it sure would be nice to have it here.. where so many searches end up. And like every other link I have found regarding this radio (so far) is a splash of brief information about the radio and a dead-end in 2023. Like these radios only have a useful life of a couple of years right after they come out. Then it's 100% unsupported and gone. Shame, It's a nice radio. I got mine working but sure would like to know the scoop. on firmware and hardware. There's "new" CPS dated 2023 but guess what? Absolutely NO information on it. And it does not allow you to program Wide FM channels. 12.5KHz only and zero information on the Internet regarding this CPS or what it does. And nothing anywhere on firmware.
Wow, that's a lot of complaining. But like you said, the video hasn't gotten many views lately. If it had, I would have updated the links long ago and perhaps made another video. But you've inspired me. I will work on an update to this video for the latest information on the radio for 2023. TYT hasn't really done anything new in a couple of years. For a while, they were hot and heavy in the Ham Radio world but since COVID, they've been pretty quiet. They're still making radios but it's the same models they had 2-4 years ago. If they were to simply make something new, I think it would revitalize they're older line models too.
@@HamRadio2 Complaining, no surprised/dumbfounded and opinionated yes. After a full day of looking for useful info on the radio and hitting so many dead ends, surprised and frustrated for such a "popular" or common radio, good information really should not be this difficult to find. I will share what I find out as I find it out versus complaining more. Thanks and take care. Good to hear back from you.
this Radio sound like a Software solution for DMR i think this is no AMBE+ Chipset build in. In my ears the Audio sound like very hard not so as the Sound from an AMBE+ Chipset is this so? (this is a Question about the build in AMBE+ chipset) Is there a AMBE+ Chip build in or is this a Software solution?
Does version 3 of this radio also fix the volume increments level? In other words, where it goes from too soft to blast you out of the room loud pretty quick?
TYT stated it wouldn't work, yes. I have heard from other viewers who tried it with failure. I'd question whether your hardware is actually the version that you say. It might work... and it might brick your radio after using it a while also. Use at your own risk.
Don't know really. When I write from the radio..this is what I come up with. Although...I'm NOT getting the "pop" and the mike back light does go out...radio works very good. I would have to say that this is a V2 radio.
If the mic-light goes out when you power off the radio, then you do not have V1. The speaker-pop, while quite common, was NOT present in every V1 radio, no matter what you might read on Facebook. The mic backlight issue WAS. Yes you could have V2, although the V2 radio I have comes up as version 2.00 instead of 1.00 or 2.01.
Curious, did they finally make this version radio "Up-gradable" to any future firmware releases? They kinda sold us on the earlier models being "upgradable", only to now learn that isn't the case as you describe in this video.
That website isn't a TYT-owned website, someone just posted that with info they got from who-knows-where. Having said that, I will go back to TYT and confirm what they told me,....sometimes they don't understand my questions ;)
Well I don't have that set in the codeplug I was using, so I will double-check, but I don't think so. I have the exact same codeplug in my 2017 and it doesn't act this way.
I bought Tytera MD-9600 v4 or v5(I'm not sure exactly), with label 2571. The FW version on device is D026.045 The TX power steps are confusing on VHF band 144-146mhz Low=0,2W MidLow=0,5W Mid=5W High=50W So, is it possible to adjust the steps in a logical sequence on VHF band 144-146mhz? Like: Low=5W LowMid=10W Mid=25W High=50W On the UHF band 430-440mhz it is a bit more logical Low=1W MidLow=5W Mid=15W High=40W Does anyone know how the TX steps can be adjusted? Test mode? ctrl+T maybe?
@@HamRadio2 I finily got it fixed. so i have the analog side working, on the DMR i seem to have a hard time geting into Digital repeters like all i get is the Blurp sound.
That was it, but the strange part is that the codeplug I loaded was from my MD2017, and it had the correct AC set. But when I loaded it into the MD9600, the CPS changed the settings, for some reason.
That TYT 9600 the one I'm programming for a guy the radio has a bad problem Invalid frequency when I Program 147.285 the local ham repeater IT will not go below 150 mhz or receive 162.550 ..
Sounds like a firmware malfunction. Try flashing the latest firmware into the radio. If that doesn't work, take it back to where you got it and see if they will exchange it. It should certainly be programmable in the ham band.
I have it working It was not the Firmware I downloaded a program Factory Software I read the radio the software has several VHF and UHF frequency ranges it was correct for the radio I wrote back to the radio and now the radio will go below 150 mhz and above 160 i can pick up 162.550 now..
It has that setting, yes - but I always keep the admit criteria to either Channel free or Always. It depends on the channel. The real issue, I think, is that the codeplug was changed by the MD9600 software, because I have the exact same codeplug in my MD2017, and it doesn't behave this way.
These power figures make me think that this test was done at 12.0 volts and not 13.8. Honestly, even if this was the case, you have to double your power before you see any real difference.
It's a shame they've really been taking a step backwards as far as user interface goes... that interface makes me wanna puke. also, no crossband repeat? Really wish they'd just take the TYT 9800, add DMR and the 220mhz band, and update the interface/hardware to something a bit more like the Btech UV-50x3 -- I'd even be willing to drop the 10m FM for the 220mhz. I'd probably pay between 300-400 for something like that. Could you imagine crossband repeat, with analog in and digital out, and vice versa?
Crossband repeat in DMR hasn't really been done yet, although I did see a commercial rig at Dayton this weekend that would do it. An all-mode, all band, is what I have been asking for, for years. No one wants to make one.
