Oct 2019: TYT's new entry level dual band radio debut.
TYT has introduced a 5W analog dual band radio that addresses a niche for budget radios (and as this has a scrambler, should be popular with secret agents also on a budget). First impressions are that this will be a popular model. The case gets it's DNA from it's older brothers and sisters: the 8200, MD-380, MD-390, and MD-UV390. It looks and feels rugged, and the keypad has the familiar layout identical to it's older siblings. The one difference is the lack of a second nob on the top of the radio, perhaps it was left off in order to make way for the little dome on the top that houses an LED that is meant to offer a small amount of illumination. The antenna mount requires a SMA-M based antenna, which we feel is a must on any high performance rugged commercial handheld.
To get more specifications, refer to the product brochure at the start of the video (note: the weight given in the brochure is not correct). Price to be determined.

A couple of observations after using the radio for work for a few weeks. On the plus side the standard battery pack lasts a couple of days while the radio is mostly monitoring. Range and audio is on par with the other radios that share it's stable, and receive sensitivity is quite good (using an aftermarket tuned antenna, I never use OEM stock antennas on any HT, even a Motorola). The one con I've seen so far is with the squelch. When an incoming signal breaks, the squelch circuit stays open for perhaps 100ms. So at the end of each transmission you get short 'squelch tail'. I've tried a couple of the samples we got and they are the same. If you have to use the radio for work and monitor it all day, this can get a bit annoying. I have sent a note to TYT to ask if they have noted this, and if they plan to rectify it in the final models they are sending to dealers, so far they have not got back to me.

A couple of hints: Squelch: To address the squelch issue noted below, I've had to set the squelch level to '7'. Display problems. The software will allow names to be more than 10 characters in length. However if you do use a long name, it will corrupt the display, so keep the length of your names to 10 characters or less.
