This is more than just a review. This is like a "how to operate this ht" kind of video. A lot of users for this ht will surely end up watching this and get more information than the manual that came with it. Great video and I'm looking forward to more reviews. Maybe something like a mobile within the more affordable price range from tyt or other affordable brands?

David, (if you still read comments on a 4 year old video). You are the BEST explaining technical stuff. I bought the radio after watching your review. Did a quick test today using it as a repeater - and it works nicely, appears not to have the issues of receiver de-sensitivity when a (really) nearby transmitter is operating.

KE0OG, Thank you for the excellent review on the UV8000D. Your overview helped me decide on purchasing this radio for myself. I just recently passed my Technician exam and look forward to getting on the air with this radio. The one item I am trying to figure out is how to set the repeater (+,-) from the software. You described how, but me being new to amateur radio, it wasn't quite clear. I wanted to follow up my thanks with a note that I did visit your info page on the UV8000E and I would like to give you a thumbs up on your decision to do a product sponsored review... No worries at all in how you presented your opinion and statement, very clearly, that this was a sponsored review. Keep them coming. I have subscribed to your channel and started watching many of your videos. Great job!

...Answered my own question by watching your video again :) The "Freq. Information" settings in the menu have the +- option but as you stated, that is for frequency mode and changes for everything on that band. In the "Channel Information" menu you state that you have to calculate the offset +- frequency manually for TX/RX... Bingo! FYI, on my just arrived (01/31/2017) UV8000E, the programming cable was detected by my Windows 10 PC and the disk and software installed with no issues. Also, my "Optional Functions" menu no longer has the check box for turning the Cross Band Repeater function on or off so I am assuming it is controlled only via the keypad option. Thanks again for your excellent video!

Hello again David, KE8FTG here, I received my radio Thursday 01/05/17, a friend cloned mine to his this afternoon. I spent the evening with the manual, and tried the disc, and USB cord, w/no issues. I watched your video again and followed your directions, I got the RAR download, and in no time or sweat, I was able to program the repeater names. Just wanted to give you a huge thanks again for your videos. P.S. I hadn't received my call sign yet the last time I commented on your videos, and I made my first contact this evening. I look forward to seeing the rest of your videos, thanks be safe. Ben

Nicely done. FYI Auto patch is a must have in some parts of the country. Cell phones don't work all the time. Additionally I saw your went to the support page and read it fully. 1st keep doing these type videos. But be Honest 2nd you made it full aware that you being supported by them, but you were critical of them. 3rd Keep everyone updated about what they have help you get by supporting your channel. It would have been nice to see a power test for them.

Look forward to seeing more reviews. I have seen many of your educational videos and Its nice that someone is doing reviews of the less expensive models for those out there considering them. Just wanted to clarify a point that was mentioned around the 4:15 mark that caught my attention, regarding the difference in the 'E' model. We are using 'D' models of the TYT TH-8000 that we obtained from TYT for use in a portable repeater build, and they also support X-Band repeat. So buyers who purchased a 'D' model more recently from a seller may also have X-Band repeat functionality. Should also perhaps clarify that as well as covering the 2M amateur band, these radios also cover the commercial band, although you need to be sure to use a tuned antenna for any frequency above 155hMHz. Ditto for UHF part, it does go above the range of the 70cm band, but again be sure to use a tuned antenna outside of the 70cm window, (we've tested the stock antennas for SWR and reflected power and they are acceptable for amateur bands but not much beyond before the SWR becomes unacceptable). I've had these radios apart and even with the side plug in place, it is evident they are not very water resistant. For example, they do not utilize a silicone chassis gasket as some other brands such as Anytone do. I prefer to disassemble them and give all the possible ingress areas a coat of waterproof silicone grease, and remove the keypad and spray it with fluid film before replacing it. I really like your concept of placing the chronological time bookmarks in the notes, thanks for the great tutorial.

No way, I could of programed this radio with out you. I thank you so much. I was ready to send it back . Had i not found you on here to help explain and show how to program. Thank you so much. TYT should be paying you because if it wasn't for you they would have a lot of returns of this radio.

Excellent video Dave as usual, in cross band repeater mode I would suggest people ensure that the radio is set-up with CTCSS tones to avoid spurious transmissions being repeated, this is especially important when using cross band repeater mode with another repeater, also in some countries cross band repeater mode is not allowed and I believe there are restrictions on its use in the US because of its inability to repeat station ID but you might be able to clarify that, overall a wonderful video Dave - 73 - G7LNK

This radio, whist being marketed as a Dual band 2m & 70cm Handheld. . I have discovered that via the bundled software, it DID allow the configuring of the radio to add 1.25m (220-225mhz) ranges as well!! - And the Radio will happily jump between all 3 frequency ranges. The UV8000E is a TRIPLE band radio!!!!

Once unlocked, one of the undocumented features of this radio is a *200-260Mhz* band. The antennas included with the *TD-UV8000D* do _not_ support this third band. You can find tri-band antennas that _will_ support it, but they tend to be expensive. You also may find specialty antennas that will support _only_ this band, but you should mark such in the event you want to use them. This feature is strictly undocumented, and you may simply want to ignore it --- and this seems to be what the manufacturer wants you to do. I bought a tri-band antenna and plan to use it mostly as a VHF radio. I also like the *Retevis RT-29* HTs, a 10W long range powerhouse that transmits in either UHF or VHF. It's on the pricey side, and if I'd known about the *TYT TD-UV8000* when I got it, I would have gotten it instead of the Retevis. The Retevis is waterproof (if you get the military version), but the *TYT TD-UV8000D* provides both UHF and VHF. The power readings I got are as follows: TYT TH-UV8000D Frequency HIGH LOW =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= 140.000 9.22W 6.03W 142.725 9.84W 6.03W 143.500 9.98W 6.05W 146.355 10.40W 6.23W 440.525 10.50W 5.73W 442.000 9.86W 5.68W 446.252 9.57W 5.58W That's amazing, but as Dave said, keep the antenna away from your head, and when it comes time to use your *TYT TD-UV8000* set the power level on LOW. It still will be at least as powerful as most existing HTs on HIGH! We've lost two friends who were careless in using their cell phones. Tumors began in their brains, just under and above their right ears, where they put their cell phones. There is so much we don't know about RF energy. So keep the antennas away from your head, as Dave quite wisely recommends! And use the LOW power settings unless you really need it. There's nothing low powered about this radio!

I recently purchased the UV8000D and from what I can see here, the functionality is nearly identical. some minor variations on the menu items, no scrambling for example. But more than enough from your overview and a get started on the programming guide to keep me going for a bit. I had heard of the issue with the drivers and I am hoping the issue isn't one I encounter - and that the Kenwood type cable is one that will work with my older Baofeng too. 73, VE3MXU.

Dave, how does one unlock the radio? I've been told the radio has to be unlocked before one gets access to some frequencies. I've read the directions, but have found nothing. Someone posted on Amazon a photo of their TYT8000D showing (A frequency): 200.000 and (B frequency): 260.000. Mine won't do that. So someone thought I hadn't unlocked my 8000D. I've done some reading on the internet and yes, it appears one has to unlock the radio, but I haven't seen any videos o on how to do this.

Battery full charged, without TX (just on stand by - RX), option 19 in menu RX power saver was OFF,18-DW=OFF, battery last at the first radio - 25 hours, the second radio - 28 hours until itself turns OFF. From total empty battery, needs 8,5 hours to full charge (until green lit).
@johnroberts7479
@johnroberts7479 2 года назад
Dave, what about batteries? If someone wants to store their radios and batteries, should they separate them first? When people buy radios, the batteries are in separate packets. But I'm told that this is in case the radios are accidentally turned on. In such a case the battery would be so completely drained as to cause serious depletion that would ruin it. The instruction manual says to make sure the radio is turned OFF and that the battery is clean and dry. But they say nothing about separating the radio and battery. What's your take on this? Should we separate radio and battery for long storage?

Could you explain more how this is different from the TYT TH-UV8000D model? Everything you've described my 8000D can do including the crossband repeat functionality (which I did test after enabling and it does work). PSA -- don't touch the battery contacts while you are transmitting on 10 watts. It smarts. One perk with the TYT radios is the antenna jacks match up with Yaesu and possibly other name-brand rigs meaning you don't need to keep a pile of adapters to share your existing antennas.
@davecasler
@davecasler 7 лет назад
In theory, the E model added the cross-band repeater function. But your info shows it was already there!
@matthewmiller6068
@matthewmiller6068 7 лет назад
David Casler Yeah, that's why I have been wondering about it. I believe there may be more than one firmware and/or directions for the "D" revision in the wild. Maybe some don't support crossband but I also wonder if some of it was user confusion. Mine did have an add-on slip of paper saying it was "the updated version" (update of what - we'll never know) with specific instructions on a separate loose slip of paper saying how to enable crossband repeat leading me to believe either there's an "old" firmware with a bug or just nobody knew how to enable it properly so the printed instructions got an update. These Chinese radios are a nighmare trying to compare one to the other, that much I'm sure of.

Hi Dave, very interesting video. I have to questions: a) Is it possible to store in memory channels VHF/UHF repeater (link) or only at the same band? b). As it have the function to operate as a cross band repeater, will operate V/U and U/V depending on the signal or only one way cross band repeater function?

Hi David. Thanks for the detailed review/tutorial. As a newbie, much of what you're saying is zooming right over the top of my head however. A couple questions if I may? What is Upload and Download Link as well as Upload and Download Tone concerning repeaters? When/why do I need this information to program my TYT and how/where do I enter in these frequencies? I don't have the software nor the cable as of yet. So all of my programming has to be from the keypad for now. Also, one of the repeaters here in the Denver area has a -0.6Mhz Offset? The rest are -5Mhz. What is different about this repeater? I'm hooking up with a local amature radio group (The Denver Radio Club) hoping to learn more next week, but am hoping to get something other than static coming out of my radio sooner than later. Thanks in advance! ~mc

Michael, keep digging and watching videos in your with the answers to your questions. The answers regarding repeater offsets are in your technician manual. The 600 kHz offset is used on 2 m. The 5 MHz offset is used on 70 cm. The Denver radio club is a great group and you should enjoy it.

Appears Amazon distribution only has the previous generation 8000D. From what I see, not much difference in the “D” vs “E” as if there is an issue, much easier with a return than with Radioditty. Realizing these are over 7 years old, is their a better radio available now, which is more recent at this price point?

Okay, what's the difference between the TYT8000D and 8000E? You mentioned the cross band repeater function, but my 8000D has the same function and, indeed, came with that function toggle already on. So is there a difference? Both radios seem to have that (shudder!) dot matrix display. The advantage of using that is that it doesn't take a lot of power and it can be seen indoors and outdoors with no problem. BUT although they're different, no one ever says how. So please tell us what the difference is!

Nice review I've bought one on the strength of it. though not from the USA! I've just passed my Foundation Class Licence here in the UK (probably similar to your Technician class). One point arising! You say that the 1750 Hz tone is for opening repeaters in Europe. Here in the UK 1750 Hz burst tones are fast becoming obsolete as well in favour of CTCSS tones. Can't speak for the rest of Europe though.

1. Amazon no longer seems to carry this radio, but AliExpress does (if not the E model, then a D-model w/ CrossBand Repeat) 2a. Amazon's listing includes this Warning: "(❗Note: Please do not operate the cross band on 10 watts for more than 10-15 mins as it will get hot and will destroy your radio.)" 2b. Another way to kill a[n Asian] 10-watt handheld radio is to transmit into an antenna with high SWR. (The only thing Dave forgot to mention is whether each of the 2 included Antennas has low-enough SWR's for safe use of 2m & 70cm Ham bands, transmitting at 10-watts. Has any1 measured SWR's for these antennas?)

That's a great question, one I've asked as well. It would be good to know the specs on SWR as well as spurious emissions. Hi Dave, I recently got a UV8000E, I'm also a total noob to Ham. The Radio seems great & I'm finding my way around it. One thing i've noticed, when you held down the red key in your video, you audibly heard the 1750hz tone ... My radio isn't doing this. What setting or settings do i need to activate to hear the tone? - & yes the volume is up :-D Many thanks

Nice review, I am having a problem with my uv 8000d. When receiving, I can only hear it for a minute or two unless I key the ptt button every minute or so. It seems that receive goes to sleep. I can see the green receive light go on, but no sound. My other radios have no problem receiving at the same time. Is there some setting I am missing that makes it mute the receive sound after a minute without transmitting? Thank you again for the great review and I hope someone can help me with this radio.

Thx Sir for the in-depth demonstration of the TYT UV8000E, it appears to be great value for the money. There're many similarities with the BaoFeng as with other Chinese HT radios, I am skeptical of an HT radio I recently purchased which is 98% identical to the BaoFeng UV5R series in functionality, but under different branding & claims to be 10 watts transmission power. I am a novice & with my limited knowledge wasn't able to find similar 10 watts HP radios or variants of BaoFeng, please tell me if only TYT UV8000 series HAM radios has true 10 watts power? Cheers.

David, great review. I got certificated in January and this is my first handheld. I'm a high-altitude balloon guy (www.starduster.info) and I was drawn to the cross band option for long range repeater contacts. This radio is a beast to program without a laptop but once programmed, it's been great. One of the options in memory mode on the laptop is that 'Epilogue' column. After some trial and error I finally nailed down that its Epilogue on the laptop and [carrier] Tail on the radio. Another fun language mismatch. You may know it already but I wanted to fill in that blank if you hadn't yet.

Brilliant tutorial David. I'd been struggling with the terrible little manual for over a week. I'm coming back to HAM radio after 25 years and am staggered at the value for money that these Chinese radios bring- I wonder if the likes of Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood sell any VHF/UHF kit now there is such aggressive competition from China. Here in the UK 2m and 70cms seem very quiet in London which is a surprise. I guess that mobiles and the internet hold a a bigger attraction for technophiles these days which is a shame. Are you goig to be reviewing the Intek KT-980HP? I have one on order as it is only £39 and I like to compare it to the TYT8000e. Keep up the good work. 73s Dom G0NLN

Programming software is not good when compared to others. Can’t use Chrip. Having manually entered in many channels I found the lack of copy/paste and add/delete channel functions to more than annoying. Topping it all off was the inability of the program to print the file once done, even though it appears several have this function. Restarting program or computer did not aid this error. Unless you can clone a buddies file exactly (no channel copy delete available) this software rates a 2 out of 10 😖

The problem with getting it for emergency communications is explained in one of my videos about being ready for emergencies. If you were in an emergency right now, would you know how to use it? Would you know who to call and when? Before an emergency you need to be trained you need to be part of an organized group like ARES. So yes I suggest you go get your license in these things will make a lot more sense. Good luck with your studies.

tzone, what Alot of ham fail to tell you, is that in a true emergency, you dont need a license to use Any radio. as long as you have No other way to communicate AND its a true emergency, then You can call for help with any radio available to you. No license is necessary for true emergencies. so if you plan to use the radio Strictly for Emergencies, then there is no need for amateur radio license. Only need license for Non emergency communications... transmitting...you also dont need a license to listen on a radio.
