So glad you checked out this singer. He always sings with soulful stirring emotion, whether it's joy or somber. He really has an amazing and entrancing voice. Definitely one of my favorites out there.

The song is attributed to the baal hatanya, the founder of one of the biggest hasidic sects today, chabad. Frome the region of Ukraine and Lithuania. (Avraham Fried and Benny Friedman are Chabad chasidim ) It is sung during the high holiday season as a special prayer called "Our father Our king" . It is a deep meditative tune to inspire introspection and deep emotion specific to the service before and during the high holidays. Motty is actually about 30 years old. His tradition is from the hasidic sect called Viznitz, and most of the sects coming from the same region (Poland Galicia Hungary) dress in a similar fashion. His shoes are slip ons, or loafers, they are in the old European fashion. The reason he is wearing them in the video is because they are worn specifically for the sabbath and festivals when tying a permanent knot is not permitted. The white stocking or long socks, perhaps could be traced back to earlier times in Europe, look at depictions of French philosophers during the enlightenment etc.. The song is sad perhaps but the intent is introspection and awakening latent emotion. The fact that you question whether the singing wordless parts are in fact words. Is because the wordless parts illicit thought just as much or more then the actual words. This is a feature found predominantly in the chabad hasidic tradition of music also called a nigun.

This tune was composed by Rabbi Shnuer Zalman of Liadi who lived from 1745 to 1812. The words are from ancient liturgy "Our Father, Our King, Thou art our Father. Our Father, Our King, we have no King but Thee". There is also vocalizations without words as you recognized.

Aveenu means our father (like the word Av, which means "father", or Abba, which means "Dad", and Malkeinu means our King.) if you go back to the Abba song by Avraham Fried, I commented that this theme that G-d is both Fatherly and Royal appears again and again, and the emotion often stems form the idea that we appeal to G-d's "fatherly instinct" (again all of these descriptions are just to help us understand the relationship, but Judaism insists that G-d doesn't have any actual emotions in the way that humans do) to be merciful and forgiving to us. IN any case, this song is the second line of a prayer said in synagogue during days of repentence (such as fast days or the days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur). Each line in the prayer begins with the words "Our Father, Our King", a recognition that while we realize that we must listen to G-d (as one listens to the king, and refusing a king's orders has some serious consequences), we are begging him to treat us mercifully the way that a father would treat his own son, tempering judgment with mercy. The first line of the prayer means "Our Father, our King, we have sinned in front of You". And the second line is the subject of this song, where we again repeat "Our father, Our King" and essentially say that even though we haven't always listened, we only have one king, in other words, our disobedience was not because we have allegiance to another king (G-d forbid), it's just that we messed up and need Your mercy. (Again, it's metaphorical, think of the old feudal kingdoms where not listening to the king might mean that you have been disloyal and decided to follow another king --- versus just making a mistake and begging for mercy. Although of course in the case of G-d, there are NO other kings other than Him, so the metaphor isn't exact --- it's just "al derech mashal", by way of analogy.). That explains the tone of the song --- heartbroken that we haven't been as good as could be, recognizing that we need mercy and that if justice were always strict we'd be in trouble . Additionally, the whole idea of the chant is to meditate on what this really means for our relationship with G-d. Hope this helps you understand and appreciate this tune and this genre. No doubt that the many styles of "Jewish music" are based on many different encounters over thousands of years with different surrounding cultures and musical traditions. 1) Jewish men aren't allowed to shave off their sideburns or "peyos" (lit. "Corners"). In the Ashkenazi and sefardi community, they fulfill this requirement by just having sideburns (no shaving above the cheekbone) or some are more stringent and grow out their sidelocks/peyos on the side a bit longer, tucking it behind their ears. The chassidim though are even more stringent and grow their peyos super long as you see by Motty. Shulem had them too. 2) what he's wearing is classic chassidic garb. The long coat is called a "bekishe". 3) motty isn't a kid, he's actually about thirty years old! Hey man, love your content! The side locks are called “peyos” (pronounced pay-ose). Shulem Lemmer, who you reviewed already, also has them. Beri Weber is another fantastic Hasidic singer I recommend you check out. All orthodox Jewish men are supposed to keep a certain amount of hair on the sideburns, but Hasidic Jews are extra stringent and keep them long. The curling is really just stylistic, I believe. Regarding the way he’s dressed, it’s traditional Hasidic garb. The hasidim (plural of hasid) sort of stopped time, in terms of their dress, back in the old days in Europe, to prevent too much assimilation into secular society. As for the lack of lyrics, a song like that is called a “niggun” (admittedly, kinda similar sounding to the N word, with an added “n,” but this is a very old yiddishized Hebrew word, so yeah, not meant to sound offensive 😬). Hasidim in particular are very big on niggunim (plural of niggun). They convey emotion and soulfulness, without the need for words. In this case, there are some words, but many niggunim have no words at all. Also, if you want a wildly different, more fun sound, you should check out Joey Newcomb. He’s very popular these days (and is actually an old friend of mine), and has a super unique style, even for Jewish music. He, too, is Hasidic. A lot of his songs are in English. Also, completely different, more traditional, vibe, but Ohad Moskowitz and Simcha Leiner (another person I know from before he gained fame) are really good! They’re not Hasidic. Both have gorgeous voices, and are very popular.

Moti is not chabad, but he is singing their song. Chabad have some very slow, soul stirring niggunim(plural for niggun), in line with the contemplative nature of their philosophy

Shulem has the sideburns (peyis) It depends on the different traditions passed down through the generations. Some keep them long, some cut them shorter, some tuck them behind their ears etc... The same is with the whole getup. The long coat, the white socks, the shtreimel... The Hassidic world kept a lot of the old-timey look and dress.

Correct, he's wearing a Streimel. Not all Chasidic sects wear a streimel, some wear a Kolpik (mainly Polish/Lithuanian), some wear a Spodik (also mainly Polish). Streimels are typically worn by Jews from Hungary and Romania. These hats are mainly worn on Shabbat, Holy Days, and special occasions. Satmar sect wear Streimels for the latter purposes, but wear a Platchige Biber hat during the week. Chabadniks wear a fedora. The high socks are also worn by married men in some sects. As in Motty's case, he is Viznitz (as my family historically was) so married men wear the high knee socks. The coat he is wearing called a Bekishe, also worn by married men on Shabbat. His side curls are called Peyot or "peyos" in Yiddish. It's a commandment in the Torah not to cut the corners of our hair. Avinu Malkeinu is a immensely emotional song. Sideburns are called payos. It's a Torah commandment. There are different traditions on the length. The important things is not to shave them. Short is ok. This singer is from a hassidic tradition where they keep long payos. Benny and co are Chabad hassidic, they wear short length payos I believe.
