Diva is one of the best VSTs, another reason I love it is because there are tons of sound design tutorials for it that I can apply to my analog gear because it translates quite well to hardware. One interesting fact, Ben Bohmer uses it live in his sets. You will see him always with a Minilouge XD, but he is actually only using it as a midi controller for Diva because he likes the layout and controls of the XD but prefers the sound of Diva. So he uses a $700 analog synth only to control a $150 digital VST. I found that funny.

Diva, my hands down favorite soft synth. I downloaded the demo and after I finished collecting the pieces of my jaw that had fallen on the floor I immediately paid to get rid of the static lol! I then bought a LinnStrument to play it with (I'm a keyboard/fretboard guy) and within minutes I was in heaven. Spent the next month creating a piece using the Diva for all the sounds except drums, which I suppose if I had been creative enough I could have done with the Diva also. All parts played on the LinnStrument, an incredible piece of hardware. Did I say I love this synth? U-he is undoubtedly at least one of the best if not THE best soft synth creators on the planet. Have since added Hive, Repro and Zebra Legacy, all from U-he, to my collection. I found them via Tyrell and Zebralette, both free from U-he and awesome in their own right. Any one who is not familiar with this company, just go and download Tyrell and Zebralette and check them out. They are free. One warning, it might get expensive from there lol! Oh, and very easy to assign parameters to a Midi controller.

I agree that Diva is the best analog emulation. But even then there are still things it struggles at that analogs can do flawlessly. Audio rate modulation and filter overdrive are the main two imo.
@Screaming-Trees
@Screaming-Trees Год назад
Yeah. I don't think that was part of the original functional requirements list for Diva to be fair. But yeah good point. Also the upper register is flawless on analogue. Such high resolution and no aliasing. Polybrute is great evidence of this. Those are areas that digital still has its work cut out for it. But these are on the fringe though with the exception of high register resolution maybe (I can see how one could make use of that in composition). I have a bunch of analogues on hand for those reasons but still, these are great times we're living in and you could do full productions with Diva no problem.

It still sounds really good! Most analog? I think U-he himself got even better with Repro-1 (not 5 so much,not my favorite). Then there are the Roland emulations. Also some other great Moog, SH-101 etc emulations. The thing is, virtual analog softsynts these days are so d-mn good that there are only minute differences, if any, to the real thing. H-ck even Steinbergs own (included in Cubase) Retrologue 2 sounds really great for some sounds! We are spoilt of choices to the point that it really doesn't matter that much anymore what you choose (as long as the arrangement, melody, choice of sounds etc is there). It has never been better!

People get divided on whether it's the oscillator or the filter that creates the character, or both, I consider myself more of a Filter person. To me, much of an analog synth's character comes down to its filter(s). The u-he diva filters sound fantastic.

@Magnus_Loov Год назад
@@WarrenPostma the downside is that they are on the dark side. They sound a bit duller when turned up completely when tests are done. But that is really a good thing for some types of sounds. It's actually what some of the real analog synts also did sound (a bit more round in the upper registers).

Having played many software synths apps via VST on an M1 Macbook, via iOS apps on iPad, and lately also on an MPC, I have to chime in to say that the Moog apps on iOS deserve serious consideration for top-tier analog tones. If you love the MiniMoog, I encourage you to check out the Model D on your iPhone or iPad. (The Model 15 and the Animoog are also killer on iOS.) No, iOS doesn't compare directly with a lot of VSTs for sound quality. But the Moog apps do.

10 years on, and Diva still sounds good. You mention the CPU usage - well, OK, but today's CPU's are much less bothered than their 10 year old cousins. On the downside, Diva can sound a little sterile without some work - A little sound design and it can shine, though the effects models could use an update today as the state-of-the-art there has improved a lot.
@Screaming-Trees
@Screaming-Trees Год назад
10 years on and we haven't really seen any innovation in circuit modelling. I think ZDF filters was the last breakthrough thing that happened and that's still the way to go today. Diva's been updated so much over the years also and I would say elegantly coded; that never goes out of style. The latest version of Diva, the one in CLAP format, is clearly ultra modern. 32 voices on a single track in Bitwig at 32 buffer and not even breaking a sweat (that's on a M1 Max). That's a feature too. Great progress over the years.

@Screaming-Trees
@Screaming-Trees Год назад
@@annother3350 Well Roland ACB didn't introduce anything new. It's component modelling, which was around a long while, and ZDF filters (again, those have been introduced by Diva and were truly innovative at the time of their introduction). They existed as theory before Diva. It's also a bit difficult to say what ACB is really since Roland has never really described it in a white paper or anything like that. But cutting edge innovation was ZDF filters. Still is the last true innovative thing in digital modelling.
@annother3350

But to be honest, I'd love them to make alternative modern UIs for the synths rather than a skeuomorphic recreation of the original: I'm interested in what the synths sound like, not what their UI looks like. The trouble with V Collection is that aside from the preset selector, every VST has a completely different interface with everything in different places. (Though this is kind of a general problem with VSTs). Each synth in the collection takes time to learn, and the lack of uniformity in the interfaces, while enhancing the vintage vibe, doesn't help (I'd love to be able to have a single synth where I could select any oscs from the collection, any filters, and so on, like Diva.
