I must say... This is the best tutorial can possibly be found on Diva ! I got my Diva a month ago and looked for a good place to start. I watched many videos on YT until I came across this series. I am on chapter 11 now and I feel I understand this amazing plugin much better. THNX you so much Jon for this contribution 🙏🙏🙏

I do old time Gospel Music in a country/blue grass style and it doesn't lend itself too much to synthesizers. However, being a musician that came from the secular rock world, I still have a love for them. Had and still have a Pro One, Arp, and DX7 and love them. But with all the free synth plugs out there for computer I had only just dabled in them from a curiosity stand point. But now being retired I started wanting to compose some synth music yet wondered why anyone would want to pay for these synths since there are some quite good ones for free. Dexed being one of them. But I had really fallen for Tyrell and Zebrallette from U-he and kept hearing about this Diva thing. So finally one day I just downloaded the demo. Big mistake lol! Within 24 hours I had paid for it and not long after that found the Sequential package and Hive on sale at NI and bought them since they were half price. Have since added Zebra legacy to the package. I am in synth heaven! These U-he folks know what they are doing. It's simply amazing what they can do with software and electrons!!
@jonaudio
@jonaudio 8 месяцев назад
Uhe makes some of the best sounding synths I have ever heard. Since you now have diva hive and zebra you're basically unstoppable at this point. All three of those are top notch. There are absolutely great free synths out there, vital being a very popular one. I also really like Surge XT. That one sounds really really good and it's a very capable synth too. Theres just something about uhe synths that make them so good. When I started using uhe synths in my tracks I felt that the sonic quality absolutely improved. I also really like Repro 1 and 5. Those sound amazing
@BirdYoumans
@BirdYoumans 8 месяцев назад
@@jonaudio Yes, I love the Repros. I used a Pro one back in my rock days as a bass synth and it just sounded great. That was one reason I got the Repro (Sequential) package. Played left hand bass and used my DX7 for the right hand and did that for about 10 or 12 years. I play several instruments, but always loved playing bass, tho I had the most fun when I just played my real bass Which I did for about 6 years. But economics dictated using the synth bass since it cut down the number of paychecks lol. And Surge is good, but I haven't done anything with it since getting the U-he synths. They have consumed me. By the way, don't know if you've tried a Linnstrument, but it goes with these plugs like you would not believe, especially if you play some guitar and like to bend notes. I had gotten somewhat proficient with the bend wheel on my keyboard, but it just has a more natural feel when you can slide your finger to make the bend and then have vibrato at the wiggle of your finger. Just thought I'd mention that if you haven't tried one yet.

Thanks man! I always feel it's best to scratch the surface a bit on the first video, do a small tour of where things are and what they do on a very basic level before diving into the technical and more complicated stuff. And most importantly to make many short videos on specific things. I find when I'm learning about something and a video is 3 hours long and I am just looking to do 1 thing, it takes more time to navigate the whole video just to find what is important to me. So someone can know 99% of diva, but they just want to know how the Lfo settings work. They just have to navigate to the Lfo video and they get what they need and can continue on in their projects.

Brilliant VST though. Does it have a kill switch? Occasionally some presets tend to play endlessly and I haven't found a way to stop the sound other than to restart the DAW. Playing with the envelope or disabling the plugin or effects doesn't seem to help.

@jonaudio
@jonaudio Год назад
bummer that you missed the sale! hopefully they have a new sale soon, that would be awesome. I'd say that diva is its own thing, mainly based on the fact that you get 5 vintage synths in one plug in. I tried out cheese a little bit, and its got some cool sounds but diva is entirely its own animal. If you haven't already you might like Zebralette, ZebraCM, or even tyrelln6, all of those are free and pretty sweet.

Great that you chose Diva! It's such a powerful synth, thank you for your videos. I have only learned from this video, that there are skins available for Diva. I really like the one you are using and found it on the u-he website. I think it is called "Diva blau". But I am still struggling to install it properly. I put the files where they should go according to the instructions (.../Panes), but it doesn't work out. Would you mind telling me what exactly you did to make it work? TIA
@jonaudio
@jonaudio Год назад
It is diva blau, that sounds right. I believe what I did was first back up all the default diva files and then I replaced the panes folder with the default panes folder and reloaded the plug in

Thanks Jon! I own the Dune 3 how is this on CPU use?
@jonaudio
@jonaudio Год назад
You're very welcome! As far as dune 3 goes, I personally haven't used it so I'm not too sure about its CPU consumption. Not sure which daw you are using but usually there is a way to monitor CPU within the daw, alternatively if you are using windows you can monitor CPU usage from the task manager. The main things that will eat up CPU in synthesis are going to be unison voices, polyphony, long release tails, reverb tails and lots of Fx processing. So if you start hearing crackles or interruptions in your audio, that could very well be that the patch is using up a lot of CPU, so reducing some of the things I mentioned would help to alliviate that.

I think that would be fine to run Diva, especially if you have the 'Multicore' option selected. I have an i7 and for most things I can run Diva just fine, and once I enable multicore, its even better and smooth sailing. I'd think in the worst case if you have a CPU heavy patch and don't want to reduce settings to make it run better, you could always print it to audio and continue on in your session. But I think overall you would be fine using Diva, but keep in mind, using max polyphony, max voices, and playing crazy 15 finger chords with lots of effects will use lots of CPU in any synth you would use.

it's a new version of Diva or it's just the skin that is different ?

it's just the skin thats different here. From the time I recorded this, uhe release a point update, which I'm currently using, but this here is a skin I got from the u-he website called 'Blau' The default red skin is a little harsh on my eyes, so using this one makes the experience a little better for me

It's a really good sounding synth, and keep in mind now we have so many options of synths that do sound good, but diva is just one of those synths that has its own unique character and right out of the box the sound it makes is just amazing. It won't offer the intense modulation capabilites as something like pigments, but if you're after exceptional sound quality and some modulation, then diva is the way to go. All synths have their differences and the spots where they shine, so picking the right tool for the job is important. I've said before, it's really difficult to make a bad sounding patch in diva.
@jbarkerhill92
