U-he Repro 5 vs Prophet 5 rev 3.3.
Low keyboard is Repro 5. Higher is P5. They are sounding pretty damn close. It is really matter of if you're synth nerd or not :) Other way there is no reason for spending so much money for real thing. You must just love it like I do.
Differences are in details. It is not about more low end or anything like that. Resonance filter is sounding different. Repro 5 pulse oscillator is sounding like in new Prophet 5. In my Prophet 5 pulse osc didn't sound like pulse anymore. Osc B detuning sounding more aggressive. Also Prophet 5 has something more 3d in it. But Repro 5 is a genius VST. Sometimes I like sound from Repro 5 more as from Prophet. I really wish Urs Heckmann would like to make Jupiter 6, 8, Arp 2600, CS-80, RSF Kobol or any other analog synth which is very high priced or rare.
I using Repro 5 on my album - "Der Weg" where Tangerine Dream meets Boards of Canada:
open.spotify.c...
Check my site if you want to know more about me:

At beginning 2019 will be my new album available where I played only Prophet 5 and Minimoog Model D. Just two great synths.

Hehe, thank you! After all those years, each Prophet is calibrated slightly differently. There's always a little bit ore cutoff here, a little less detune there. But the basic character stays the same :-)

I was about to make the same point. There is actually a pretty huge variation in Prophets both because of individual calibration or even production runs used different components. The Repro 5 definitely captures the character, after that it's up to the artists to draw out the nuances they are looking for. Edit: Ok, I didn't notice you were the U-He guy! LOL. Much respect.
@UrsHeckmannBerlin

@@robertsyrett1992 That's particularly true as we've had a Rev 3.0 for reference which still used lots of parts of the 2.0, e.g. the power supply. I think the power rails may even be at a different voltage. I don't recall if it was during a meeting with Dave Smith or in the Abernathy book, but apparently they used surplus stock of parts in new products whenever they could make them fit.

@@UrsHeckmannBerlin I don't know why but I find these kind of details really interesting. It helps me remember that every synthesizer is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete but for those very reasons unique and perhaps even beautiful. I'm really curious to see how the story of the current wave of synths will be told 30 years from now. Will the minilogue or microbrute have the same appeal that the Juno-106 or MS-20 has now? Will the Makenoise QMMG have the same lore regarding it's revisions? Will Clavia ever bring back the Nord Modular with the same attention to detail that Moog has replicated the Model D?

It’s a good thing that there are good VSTs out there for most classic synths because they were made in the 70s and the 80s and not only their prices are going up but the cost of keeping them in good working order will rise exponentially as they are all way past their useful life expectancy. A lot of them contain integrated circuits that have been discontinued for decades and old stocks are running out quickly. So just for an historical perspective, it’s cool that we have access to those VSTs as one day only museums and really rich peoples will be able to keep them working.

Reading all those comments is actually funny. Imagine that digital was first and that we created “analog” afterwards... Everybody would probably say .. “Nooo computer version sounds better” I the 80’s when you put “digital” on a product it was a selling strategy. It’s like watching technicolor movies, my kids are saying it looks like sh*t , but I like it.... 🤷‍♂️
@TheMrFinalizer
@TheMrFinalizer 3 года назад
Good comments. Thanks! But the word "digital" is back because of Elektron stuff. So, I think we all like digital now :) But really good point. I really love Repro5. It depends, but sometimes I'm starting with Repro5 instead of switching on real Prophet5, because I know, that they are sound almost same. But, if you need real I call that "harmonics"/detunes from analog it is good to turn on P5.

@@TheMrFinalizer Thanks! Well I have a big analog synth collection and to be honest , some sounds have more balls in digital... Just take the OPX Pro plugin, this is the best digital emulation of the oberheim OBX . Appart from the sample and hold ... it beats my hardware OBX every time... now that said ... the hardware is much more fun and gets things done quicker. It al depends... What’s also important is your soundcard ! If your soundcard is not on the Black Lion Mod list , you have a good one 🤣. And then there is the whole platform of transmission... in the 80’s: analog desk, analog compressor, analog eq , tape back to the board again , to tape , mastering again to tape and tube eq’s ... and then to vinyl.... yeah , the sound was “warm and big” . Solution: buy vinyl ...🤷‍♂️ The norm today is earplugs and mp3/streaming, I doubt someone will hear the difference. Long live analog!!

Late to this party, but with the release of the Rev 4 I stumbled on this - it's funny but every time I was watching I was drawn to the P5 but when I was only listening I was drawn to the Repro. I think there's a strong influence of the nostalgia and beauty that influences the ears. Great job, thanks.

The VST (as usual) has more high end, which can easily fool a listener into thinking it sounds better. It sounds more flat & lifeless compared to the real thing. VSTs also have a hard time in the higher registers - it's clearly heard at 5:40 & 8:04. Hardware has more depth & emotion (at least to me, maybe not to newer generations). Repro is one of the best soft synths, don't get me wrong :) Thanks for the demo

I've found that while many Vst emulations sound incredibly close to the original, almost all of them lack sub frequencies. Listen carefully to the analogue and digital synthesizer. In analog synths, the low end is incredibly smooth, but in digital it's kind of muddy, even if you compensate for it with an EQ. All of the above does not mean that RePro is a bad synthesizer. On the contrary, it is one of the best vst synth I have heard.

To say that the end listener won't know or care kind of defeats the purpose of any minute differences that may occur between the hardware and software, but it's true. i was using hardware, then software, then hardware but the best software sounds so good...this however, is one of the best - top three.

The Hidden Agenda yes, hardware is basically inspiring. BUT... vintage hardware brings tons of issues and trouble which totally destroy inspiration in my case. Plus most vintage keyboards have poor key beds with usually no velocity nor aftertouch which is frustrating.

@RayyMusik

I don‘t buy Sequential stuff because of their quality issues - but I fell in love with the P5 sound again. So I played around a bit with the Arturia P5. It sounds nice - too nice, like most Arturia VST synths. They lack the grit and bottom end of the originals. Solution: - a 21st century hardware synth, the Arturia PolyBrute, which sounds awesome in its own right - plus the Repro for genuine P5 sound. As others mentioned, there aren‘t two P5s with 100% identical sound anyway. BTW, this saved me ca. 1000 €! :)

The big difference here, and it is the same with the Roland stuff, albeit nowhere to the same degree, that the plugin is not as dynamic as the real thing. Roland has completely brickwalled the output stages of their plugins, where as this is a pretty hard compression. I have found that using Dominion (free) or Fabfilter (expensive but worth it) vst to do upward expansion makes these plugins almost feel like the real deal. Thanks for the awesome comparison, and totally agree, Urs should do a Jup 4/6/8 next.

@@GamesExposed Fabfilter Pro-G. Demo it with upward expansion settings. Or just ger dominion and set the sliders to (Attack +6 60ms, Sustain -3 250ms), and it will give the VA plugins a lot more realistic character to the tone. In fact the more you increase the + and decrease the minus # the more expansion, but those seem to be a good happy place to start. Try it out and let me know. I use dominion with those settings on prerecorded music too, so I can expand the depth back to a good DR.

I don't understand, at least one oscillator on the real Prophet is pitched an octave down at the beginning? Completely pointless comparison
@TheMrFinalizer
@TheMrFinalizer 5 лет назад
But same should be in Repro 5. I don't like clinical clear comparison which are mostly on youtube where is one oscillator comparing to one oscillator or showing oscilloscope. It isn't thru comparison in my opinion, because all synths sound the same and it doesn't matter that waves looks same under oscilloscope for me. I wanted to show live sounding instrument to show differences and patches. And, what I find mostly important, not to make fully cutoff filter fully open, because all synths also sounds the same. This comparison really don't show all aspects, you're right. Because both real synth and repro 5 are very deep instruments. So, I really barely scratch the surface. I just show how close they can sound, not similar. BTW sorry that you find this comparison pointless. There is also only one on youtube, and I hope this one will help you to judge if prophet 5 is better sounding or repro 5. I just wanna help to showing how close they can sound. Not similar.
