The encampment in McGill is getting out of control now too. I side with Palestine, but these BDS-backed student unions don't have a monopoly on concern for the people of Gaza. There are other ways to make your voices heard that don't involve blockading university campuses and interfering with the day-to-day activities of people who work on campus or who are attending summer courses! At McGill the other day the protesters spray painted one of our historic buildings, writing slurs all over it. It's actually quite disrespectful. Again, I stand with Palestine, Israel has crossed the line! But these encampments, which are chalk full of radical students (mostly from UQAM btw, they're not even McGill students) are just flat out obnoxious. Moreover, they built a makeshift mosque here replete with a papermache crescent moon (it was recently removed) and they've been holding religious gatherings of up to fifty people at times on the campus green! Imagine if these were Mormons? McGill is a secular university, it is home to people of all faiths. It's not appropriate to be holding religious ceremonies on private property like this. Finally, I'd maybe be more sympathetic if it wasn't students from other universities using McGill as a staging ground for their protests, so they don't have to worry about being recognized by administrative staff on their home campuses. They're using my university to make their point. It's mostly the student unions from UQAM and Concordia who in 2017 mostly agreed to back BDS, but McGill's student unions did not unanimously back BDS. Now these groups have come to force themselves into our campus life. What right do they have to do this? Again: these protesters don't have a monopoly on concern for Palestinian lives. They are not the avatars of the people suffering in Gaza. And moreover, they're calling for an end to colonialism and capitalism. Give me a break! What a load of nonsense these protests have become and they've achieved nothing. What's happening in Gaza is wrong. All these protestors prove however is that BDS-affiliated groups have a sophisticated network capable of organizing large-scale protests nationally - but these protests are duds, they're parades of radical political nonsense, marrying Palestinian self-determination to a myriad of other nonsensical movements like Land Back, decolonization, anti-capitalism blah blah. These are the same kids who think every Christian or conservative is a nazi. It's just sad what the left has become.
