This U.S. Navy training film (MN 10121a) showcases the Mark 4 Gun Pod (Mk 4) and features footage of the gun pods on a Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and an A-7 Corsair II. The film opens with a Skyhawk firing the 20mm ammo used in the Mark 4 Gun Pod. The jet flies through the air and strafes the ground. The Skyhawk taxis to a stop on a runway carrying the gun pods (01:14). The plane’s crew remove a gun pod from the plane. An illustration is used to show the structural layout of the Mk 4 (02:08). The Skyhawk armed with the Mk 4 pods takes off. The film shows the actual gun on a platform--outside of the pod (02:51). Graphics are again used to show the anatomy of the gun itself. Viewers see the two barrels and Mk 11 gun with its revolving chambers, as well as how the revolver works firing rounds, the yoke pivoting, and its booster recoil. A man takes off the loader frame to point out the gun’s ejectors and sprocket set (07:04). Two men feed ammunition belts into the loading dock of the Mk 4. They close the access doors and latches then connect the pod electrically to the aircraft. An A-7 Corsair II flies through the sky firing the Mk 4 (09:30). A view from inside the cockpit shows the armament control, charge clear switch, and ready safe switch (10:42). Illustrations are used to show how the gun pod responds to the cockpit controls and how the trigger sends fire voltage relays through the control box to the first fire barrel. There is more footage of the Corsair flying and firing the gun pod. Another view from the cockpit shows how the pilot clears the guns from the cockpit controls. The film concludes with a plane firing the Mark 4 Gun Pod at a target.
Developed by the US Navy, this pod is fitted with the Mk 11 Mod 5 20 mm cannon, along with 750 rounds of ammunition. This pod is said to have been used on a variety of US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft including the A-4 Skyhawk, F-4 Phantom II, A-7 Corsair II, and OV-10 Bronco. Approximately 1200 Mk 4 Gun Pods were manufactured by Hughes Tool Company, later Hughes Helicopter, in Culver City, California. While the system was tested and certified for use on the A-4, the A-6, the A-7, the F-4, and the OV-10, it only saw extended use on the A-4, the F-4, and the OV-10. In the case of the OV-10, the unit was used by VAL-4, a Navy squadron assigned to Binh Thuy, Vietnam, and was used extensively for close air support missions.

The Mk-4 gun pods we had in Vietnam were, from a maintenance standpoint, a giant pain in the ass.

Hey! Very interested in hearing about how the pods were used in Vietnam? Been looking for info on this for years! What kind of missions were they used on? What were the intended target types?

the rifling was like a shotgun using a rifled choke for slugs, the latter at end of barrel instead of front at chamber end/bullet bearing surface engagement area.

I WAS GOIN TO SAY IT WAS PERHAPS THE PREDECESSOR OF THE RUSSIAN GSH-23 AND GSH-30 THT ALSO HAS TWO BARRELS FIRING AT INSANE RATES, BUT THEY ARE GAS DRIVEN, SO THIS DESIGN IS TOTALLY ORIGINAL AND ONE OF A KIND.....

I figure mounting it on the wing was mostly for film demonstration purposes. I would think you'd prefer the gun mounted on the center line and fuel, rockets, or bombs outboard.

The Mk4 is Navy not Air Force . USAF used the SUU-16, and the later SUU23/A.

Interesting. Air Force title, Navy A-4 aircraft from VA-125, and Naval Weapons Center China Lake. The A-4 also had two 20 mm internal cannon. Hope the oldies do a wire check on the aircraft before they hook the gun pod up. Sort of a safety issue.

OldNavy7191 sounds like you have seen these so I will ask you. Did these malfunction a lot and if they do the pilot has no way to clear it.

Derek Hall No, I never saw one of these gun pods. A Navy Squadron which I was attached to on the late 1980s had the A-4M. We tested modern weapons on these A-4s. Believe that these gun pods were out of date long before the 1980s. No idea how they operated other than this video.

Timothy and Derek - I was in VF121 (F4B at the time) and we only used them for weapons training flights out of MCAS Yuma. They were a pain in the huevos. The pilot could clear misfires, but the biggest problem was jamming where a round would get stuck part way out of the cylinder. We ordies would have to disassemble the gun to get at the wayward round. Then it was a lot of work to extract it. We mounted the pod on the enterline Aero 27(?) rack and it was boresighted by means of a crosshair on the nose gear. A periscope like device was inserted into the top barrel to line up with the nose gear. Now comes the fun part: we had to have a man on each footpad with a wrench to make the adjustments that the sighter called out. This took a lot of time made even longer in the desert heat. Then the vibrations caused by starting, taxiing and flying the a/c threw everything off. As an aside, the base ordnance men didn't belt our ammo. We did, in a quonset hut with no circulation. At least we were in the shade.

Pneumatically initiated (and jam cleared) Gas boosted recoil operated revolver cannon. So not really. Both probably have similar reliability and near instant ramp up to full fire rate.
