these concepts aren't knew and have been around since probably the 60's-70's, but creating a laser powerful enough to shoot down missiles, and other aircraft is completely different. I'm sure they had lasers in the 80's that could shoot things down, but the power source Is what stops these lasers in a realistic setting.
By the time it’s declassified and the public learns about it, it’s been in operation for several decades! That means they’re working on things right now that are more high tech and advanced than anything we can imagine!

Tesla had the "death ray" plans already configured as far back as 1910s. We don't hear about declassification of military tech as citizens for a good 30/40 yrs after it's already been in use. Sometimes more, if they wish to retain a stagnant economy/control over population. (Fuel sources, transportation, food production, warfare weaponry, ect). Eh... In reality, reflective materials would be far more trouble than they're worth. Mirrors aren't perfectly reflective, and thus some energy will be absorbed. Covering it with a reflective material only causes research into higher-output lasers, and forces reflective coatings to be of increasingly higher quality and cost. Not to mention that if you had a reflective coating, you'd need to constantly polish and repair it to maintain its effectiveness. Applying such a coating to a self-destructing weapon such as a missile would very likely be considered a waste of money. You're better off overwhelming defenses with sheer volume, ala Macross.
High power lasers are much older technology than you think. Back in the early 60’s they were firing lasers threw 4” steel from 50 miles away. Just think what they have now. I have a "History of the Air Force book" i got from my dad qnd its at least 15 years old..Anyway, It has a section about lasers and this guy acts like its a new technology...Governments 20 years ahead of what we consider new.
You have no idea just how advanced the government is, shit we think is new shit was developed long before it was a public thought, ever since 1947, The Government has possessed a great deal of advanced information from a Advanced Intelligence outside of our planet, been doing so for a while now. Think bout it like this, before Roswell, we was decades away from achieving what was achieved in the 50s, after Roswell, we got technology that would have taken decades to build, develop or produce! After Roswell, America just happens to be one of the worlds Tech giant, coincidence? I think not. It's no surprise that aliens are teaching the government how to make advances in technology and achieve USS Enterprise level spacecraft possibly in the next decade. We already close to going on Mars, theres talk of building a base on the moon, I've even heard that they might expand and upgrade the ISS and make it bigger. Just with that alone would be a breakthrough for humanity, by the time those happen, you will see Enterprise ships coming out. But yes the government is always ahead in technology than civilian corporations are.
