In my four years in a rifle squad I had a sergeant as a squad leader for a out 6 months, me right before I got out. Otherwise the squad leader was always a senior corporal.

Camp Pendelton, our company had maneuvers there when I was in RNMCB-2. A small herd of buffalo came through our camp one evening.

Native Americans might say that the Buffalo were there trying to teach the Marines a thing or two about Life.

As accordance with the US Army manual 7-7 and 7-8. Squad Leaders must inform their men and conduct PCIs or (Pre Combat Inspections) to include FRAGO for Fragmentary Orders to their fire teams to upcoming and change of mission. Never complain there grunt! Mission will always change. Your understanding of any changes prepares will prepare you mentally and tactically because you know as individuals of personal tasks called upon you and be ready when leaders above you become casualties in combat. In combat everyone has to have the ability to do leadership tasks 2 levels above. Initiative is key to winning in combat either right or wrong but make a decision. Like Murphy's Laws of Combat. Anything will get you killed to include doing nothing.

Regarding each man being trained to step into leadership positions two grades above when thier leaders are out of the fight. The communist militaries were largely by doctrine the opposite and only trained the officers to be leaders to the point only officers could read maps, leaving their command leaderless when their officers are neutralized.

This is where the full auto M14 is best used, at the fire team level.

The M-14 Rifle with a selector switch was useless as an automatic rifle. It was impossible to control due to its high cyclic rate of fire and light weight. It replaced the Browning Automatic Rifle ( BAR) which was a superb weapon but very heavy to carry ( 20 lbs with the bipod). Former 0311 Rifleman, U.S.M.C. 1965=1969.

William Brownstone Not accurate with a selector switch but single shot it's quite precise.

The M14 is a fine rifle, just don’t put it on full auto unless you want a trench broom

Boy, in the video those Marines in the role of the automatic rifleman sure were handling it just fine.

Other rifles such as the AR-10 are considered by many to be more controllable in full automatic firing the same cartridge.

So the automatic rifleman used his M14 on the automatic setting? Interesting. I assumed that each Fireteam had an M60.

The "M60 in the squad" idea is non-TO&E and was only really used in some units in Nam and maybe Lebanon.

I mean, to an extent it is, but primarily it's about the function of a rifle squad. It's a very technical video and primarily concerned with notifying the watcher on the functions and operation of a rifle squad. If you're looking for a "killer of men" video, I reccomend watching the "Shoot to Kill" training video also on Periscope Films.
