The ones protesting are not farmers they are middlemen mafias who procure grain from the farmer at a much lower fixed rate and then sell it in other cities at triple, quadruple prices. The new laws enabled the farmers to directly sell their produce in cities thereby cutting off the middlemen mafias and giving the farmers much more freedom and much greater profits.
