Hi! Chef and general food anthropology nerd here! So, the sausages and beans are actually a really unique piece of Korean food history. They have a unique dish there called "army base stew", which is basically something they developed after the Korean war, and American troops left a bunch of their own supplies behind. So that's basically what this entire MRE is. This MRE is incredibly fascinating to me. Thank you for showing us this.

When I commented two weeks ago that the South Korean MRE would probably have fried rice, kimchi, cake balls, and I talked about how a popular Korean meal is Army Stew with hot dogs and kimchi, I didn’t actually think there would be hot dogs in the MRE. That is something you’d normally see in villages around bases and there are even restaurants in Seoul that specialize in it. It made me laugh seeing them in the actual MRE. You were a Kraft single on top of everything away from a lovely Army Stew. Well, lovely-adjacent.

It was really interesting how different an approach their MRE was. It's an actual meal with rice, a couple mains and kimchi, with a bowl to eat them in. Reminds me of an Indian meal (my in-laws are Punjabi), with rice, a couple curries and pickle (their pickles are more like kimchi, so mango pickle isn't sweet) or yoghurt as a condiment.

I feel like maybe you guys could reach out to Korean Englishman for more about this... Korean food shares a ton of American Influence, and there's even one dish called Army Base Stew that's just... kind of a weird mix of Korean foods and American foods that were on hand after the cease-fire. IDK, just seems like a great opportunity for a crossover episode where you guys eat some food that isn't terrible.

I heard that s. Korea military i s really, really hard to go through. I would have been surprised if there would have been more then 'what you need'. But they delivered - water is everyever, maybe thats the thought behind it with the missing drinkpouder? I don't know. But it annoys me so hard that there is no such thing as an MRE from switzerland. We have a pretty good system with actual kitchens, wildly spread through the country, they bring the food to the soldiers or there is some sort of a supply chain. Basics like supermarket snacks are given for marches but for the meals itself, there are kitchens behind. There are nice storys to it 😂 but it would be fun to see what the sous-chef has go say to our Cervelats. ❤ thank you for your omnomnom-Service!!

Hi from Quebec Canada😊 Damn!! I started cringing from the moment that you guys couldn't follow the simple instruction diagrams. The last image shows to put the heating system (with food packet) inside the original sleeve (bag). The pictured instructions are as simple as IKEA instructions, language always gets lost in translation but pictures are worth a 1000 words. Those that know, put it in there, then they pull on tab and reclose the sleeve heating it up to insane heat levels (as hot as eating a stew directly from the pot)😅. NB Bento is to Japan as dosirak is to Korea as lunchbox/lunch container/lunchpail/lunch pack (Tupperware😅) or even TV dinner is to USA. As for the weiners, they are a Korean version of the ones imported (canned Vienna sausages) into the country by GI military during the Korean war. They are never sold in cans but rather like any other sausages (vaccum-sealed) in the refrigerator. Their casing and filling is closer to original bratwurst in Europe in flavour and texture. They are used in many applications but best when grilled as they become delectably crispy, the filling is reminiscent to European sausages as they are more juicier since there are noticeable pockets (nibs/pieces) of chewy fat embedded into them. The version you had is the "traditional" (which everyone has eaten there) Korean side in a dosirak. There are various types of it but it's simply a ketchup sausage stir-fry with onions and bell pepper.

Yeah I knew tiny sausage taste terrible XD many of our platoon didn't like it either when I was in military. Because texture seems like old rubber washer. Should be more tender and meaty? like commercial one. But I love the falvor of sauce BTW In field training, usually they're not just hand over MRE , also give us energy bar, gatorade, or energy drink call pocari sweat, or hand over cup noodle for extra calories XD

I wish i knew what the contents were called in Korean then I could tell you why the “hotdog” tasted that way- because it might not be a hotdog… in blood sausage in Korean they put noodles in it as a binder so the texture is different so I wonder if that is happening. When you expect hot dogs and get something else it is disconcerting and probably doesnt taste good to you.
