It all seems so long ago. I first saw U2 during the Boy album and last saw them around 85. Although they call themselves 'punk' they were actually quite ground-breaking at the time. There was genuine positivity in the sound. There was also an intimacy, which punk lacked. October is actually a terrific album.
@jagrobbie He's actually not laughing at that, there was an edit done at 6:27 I have seen the original interview and Bono says: "you felt that if you made a few mistakes or you were an arsehole to someone, y'know you were carrying this weight around you, and i found....." etc... they cut out the arsehole bit from the audio for some reason and patched it up in the video feed with the shot of Larry... If you listen v closely to 6:27 you can kind of hear it...
twice indoors and twice outdoors. Sheffield Arena, Manchester GMEX in 1992, Wembley Stadium, Leeds Roundhay Park in 1993. Plus 2 other times. Then I grew up.
interesting answers for favorite songs. Runnign to stand still is up there for me, Tomorrow, which they've barely ever played live, used to be a fav of mine as a teen. Drowning man has NEVER been played live and yet adam named it and its a very good song. Hawkmoon outside of all i want is you is probably the second best song on Rattle and Hum. But i would't call it close to being one of their best
Hearing Bono speak at that time about the role of religion in their music makes you unfortunately understand why so many people call them hippocratic. Okay, belief is a very personal thing, but everyone knows about their "Shalom" time, about "Gloria", about the meaning of "40", the "amish" way Bono dresses on the Joshua Tree Tour et cetera et cetera. It's perfectly okay, but why deny it? Fearing that religious nuts could use you for their aims?
Faith and religion are two completely different things. This is what he's talking about. Bono could never and has never denied his faith, it comes out in half his lyrics.
