Damn, the more of these comments I read the angrier I get. What a bunch of fucking haters and gear snobs. If you're not making a living as a mastering engineer, and 98% of us here are not, then who cares if the plug in differs somewhat from the hardware. No one should expect any plug in to exactly replicate it's analog counterpart. Plugins and the hardware boxes they emulate are tools. What you do with that tool is far more important to your mix/master than the tool itself . If you have an unlimited budget to buy gear, then by all means grab the hardware. For those of us with limited means (the other 99.8%) the plugin emulations will do nicely. As for Russ's review, if you don't like his flavor then exercise your options and move on. You sound ridiculous knocking someone who took the initiative to do something helpful.
Man this plugin is a beast. My fav UAD plugs so far are this one the Manley Masive Passive, the EMT 140, All the Neve plugins and I also like the Millenia EQ. UAD makes great plugins I cant wait to buy the Ultimate OCTO 4
I usually use Ozone Compressor into L3 Multi. I really like the beef and color that the Hardware version brings out. This is worth trying out fore sure. at least for me.
I will respectfully disagree with the purists screaming bad monkey at all or a goodly portion of plugins. They are tools. Yes, they sound different. Some better than others, some garbage….same in hardware world. Sure they are marketing them to be similar to the originals. But very few, if any, will tell you that they are exactly the same. Mastering engineers in particular will find the UAD MP, and the UAD SHMC to be different than the hardware boxes. However, I have been doing this for over 30 years and consider myself to be somewhat of an "open minded" purist as I have the new UAD stuff, I have lots of hardware tools. I find uses for both these days. Although, I will have to agree that UAD is hit or miss in some cases. Moreover recreating silliness in a plug that can be done with other tools in lieu of someone who has no clue being able to instantly hit a preset (not unlike all of the other Manufacturers). In the end, the performance, the source, and the engineer are what makes the musicdifference. Sure vintage hardware, tubes and good yummy stuff are all great. But it does NOT mean that digital plugins are not musical at all, and are worthless and blah, blah, blah. Simply not true. In the end, the performance, the source, and the engineer are what makes the musical difference anyway. This has been a recurring theme with new technology for years and will continue. Look it up.
+Floyd Magnus If I hadn't met UAD I'd most likely be starting to piss you of with my "no you're all wrong" charade :-D But at least some wisdom has gotten into me over the years and I must agree with you. Although many plug ins qualify as total garbage. I do love the Lexicon verb plugs and the UAD ones. But Waves (which I all own) are certainly not the best sounding ones I'm afraid. By the way, if you know of a plug in that comes 95% or more close to a real CL1-B, please enlighten me.
Excellent review, thank you for clarifying many things like the 2.1 ratio, unity gain at 7, and the 90 freq side chain. So many rude comments on here...why?. This guy is being polite, going through all the aspects of the unit.
"I appreciate the effort that goes into these videos, but there is far too much talk and not enough action." TKE, Are you serious bro? What more could the man have given you? Great video Russ and that track is banging. PM me if you sell tracks like that.
this isn't a bad review. I used the Ferric TDS. Its free and adds warmth to almost anything. With T-racks 670 fairchild a standard preset makes anything sound good. This shadow hill compressor has hit me as a very useful plugin. I like the reviews of the eddie kramer tape plug in and izotope's recording bundles have me drooling too.
Thanking you, Audio Gurus of the Pro Tools Expert Channel Comments, for your most informative insight. Because of you, I now know that hardware is, in nearly every case, better than software. If it weren't but for your magnificent ears I might have never known. They have to keep pushing you, Pro Tools Expert. If you weren't made aware that this plug-in weren't as, I don't know, let's say "warm" as some other incredibly expensive hardware unit it attempts to emulate, you'd not be working hard enough for us, the free viewers of RU-vid. I'd say my favourite just has be, "doesn't hold a candle to the hardware unit." Because one would only post such an utter truth if one most certainly, definitely owned a Shadow Hills mastering compressor... and would rather slag on the plug-in version on RU-vid than use it. Thanking the lot of you, you waste everybody's time.
yes you need to download the update from the UAD site for the plugin to show up in your list:-) Looks like there are new ones up from just last week too! Get your credit card ready! lol
I own the Dual Vandergraph and I can say from this tut that the sidechain filter sounds dead on to the Vandergraph if I mess with the settings to get close to the sound he has on the vid. Peter Reardon seems like he's pretty passionate about quality and I've spoken to him directly and he really does love his gear. I'm pretty sure he wouldnt let this emulation happen if it didn't sound dead on to the real thing.
fonimer has a point. Switching between nickel, iron, and steel for ex in the time span of 1.5 seconds is short indeed. Same for other options he breezes through. I'm still thankful for the vid, tho!
Every setting in this video pumped and made me a little seasick. I've used the hardware and it's smooth as butter. As with anything, a little goes a long way.
How loud decibel-wise can this plugin get? Is it capable of going +2 to +4 decibles as in pro mastering? Thats always been the issue with plugins, as in the Waves Limiters or the T-Racks brick wall limiter; they get as loud as -5dB before they totally distort the song.
You're comparing the digital domain to the analog domain, and that's a bit of apples and oranges. Lossless digital audio has a fixed bit-depth, which means it cannot accurately represent audio above exactly 0dB. This is why waves and T-Racks, among others, limit to this threshold.
I almost didn't buy this because of some of the user reviews. I watched and listened in my studio. Granted even at 720, the fidelity is going to be minimal. But I can hear it here even in the youtube video, while probably more subtle than on an insert. Bottom line. Its a transparent compressor and listening on crap speakers in a crap room with crap converters isn't going to reveal what you will actually hear.
Obviously your ear isn't trained. OR, YOU didnt pay attention. If you have to listen to his playback any longer than he did, U r the one with the small attention span. I followed along just fine. And I'm in quiet environment on a macbook pro with KRK headphones! Can hear everything just fine. I give this review a 10/10. Especially because it didn't drag on unnecessarily for the likes of you, who just don't have what we in the business call, 'The ear' :)
Confuses more than it enlighted me..... I´ve tried out the REAL thing @ musikmesse frankfurt this year. It´s basically a daisy cained two way compressor, a little optical one followed by a discrete FET style compressor with independent controls for each type.
music has become democratized, everyone can make "music" of course high quality music suffers like this, quantity increases, quality decreases, and the whole software emulation development, selling the dream of becoming a stat to everyone, adds to this - but then again, UAD plugs are really good, you can make good music with it, but youre right, if everyone listenes to music on their iphone speakers in the metro, we really need to reconsider where music industry is going, not all hope is lost!
Good plugin absolutely, for the price is pretty good, but honestly is still far from the hardware , watch the "doctor mix" video called "Shadow hills mastering compression in action" and decide yourself. Maybe in a few years they develop a better plugin.
Not really noticing an appreciable change in audio quality from the input to the output of this unit...Not like what you hear going on over at the house of Kush with the UBK-1 or their hardware Fatso..to be honest, You really nead a good hardware unit for mastering and UAD are really hit and miss with their products..This one misses the mark of the REAL Shadows Hills hardware equivalent terribly....
Got yourself a copy? No, you just got the demo there buddy. Which anyone that has a UAD card can do, without listening to all the talking. More sound, less talk!
He talks way too much and he switches settings so fast you can't really judge the sound quality. Also, he's trying to cram way too much information into the video. His attention span seems very small indeed. I find it irritating that he keeps stopping the music. Too rushed to be an effective review.
I bet you say the same thing about the newly released in VST form by shadow hills mastering Class A. Its a limited edition. Where only 50 units were ever released. The regular hardware units cost $10,000. The limited if anyone choses to even sell one probably cost a million dollars. Long story short the reason YOU "cant hear anything remarkable" is because you don't have remarkable hearing. LOL. You the type of guy that has a drumset in his dinning room underneath a chandler. YOU call that remarkable? haha
Dear Pro Tools; I have nothing personal against this guy, but wanted to let you know I stopped watching this video tour once I heard WHO was conducting it. Please be advised it's probably better to script the verbage and let the "sound" do most of the "talking" for the products!!! cheers.
I cant take this guy seriously with all his stuttering and stammering. He just sounds like he has no confidence in what he's saying. Does the flood switch actually act as a brickwall or not? Because he doesn't sound very sure.
