In this episode I stack two versions of a classic compressor against one another - the new “Class A” version of the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor and the classic version. Brainworx suggests that the classic version is suited for the drums buss, and the Class A version for mastering, so we try both in both situations too see how they do.
Audio Starts at the 2:45 mark
Drums Buss - 2:45
Full Mix - 5:57

Hi! Question: How do you compensate for the HIGH CUT which starts at 15000kHz and goes down to 22000kHz on the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Class A? This high cut is only active when the First OPTO Compressor is turned on. It really knocks me off my feet every time - when I'm Mastering an already well balanced mix in frequency response. How do you deal with this "problem" - CUT? In the old version (green) - we know that this "problem" is not present.

Thank you for this video. I see on the right that you have Slate Digital plugins. While not sure if you have all of them, but did you ever find the Shadow Hills comparable to Slate's FG-X Mastering Processor?
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 3 года назад
I do have FG-X, but it's in a different category. The Shadow Hills is a compressor, not a limiter, used for dynamic control. The FG-X has a comp, but is mainly used for it's limiter section to add gain.

Thanks for putting this out so quickly! I appreciate it and was really curious about the differences as well. I agree. The Class A has more depth to it, and more HD type of sound. Everything is more identifiable, each instrument in it's own space on the Class A. On the OG it's all smeared together. Which might be good on certain things, but certainly not for the mix buss/master IMO. Gotta figure too that the tech between 2010 when they made the OG version and 2019 when they made the Class A version has varied as well, so that very well could impact the final outcome too! I know that when I run a mix from ProTools 2019 on a Focusrite Scarlet tabletop converter and then through my heavily modded 192 the differences are very drastic! More 3d depth, more stero spread, deep lows, clearer highs, sheen in the highs, and a mid punch on the 192 vs the Focusrite is all washy and has a film over it or something like that. So if they used better equipment in the 2019 version it will result in a better plugin, even if the process of collecting the information from the source stays the same....which it most likely won't either. But I hope they continue to upgrade and change as better sounding plugins are always welcome on my studio computer! No matter what! Well unless they up the price where I can't afford them that is. Then it doesn't matter.... I"ll be using the old outdated plugins anyway! No way in hell am I paying $500-$1000 for single plugin! Hell I won't even pay more than $50 for a single plugin! If it don't go on sale, I don't own it! Period! Gotta figure on a average rock song it's about 50 tracks give or take a few. On each track your using a minimum of 2 plugins and a maximum of 10. So on average, per song, your using 150 instances of plugins. So that averages out to about 33 different plugins per song on a minimum. If each plugin averages out to $200 per plugin that's $6,600 worth of plugins per song. Well I know for a fact that number is very low on average, and you can most likely in reality bump that right up to a real world average of $10,500 per song. And that's just 1 song, not a full album! That's some ridiculous money right there on something that in reality is a bunch of 1's and 0's! You keep paying a shit ton of money for 1's and 0's in a different order...but still their all just 1's and 0's! Think about that!

Hi brother! A lot of professionals use gear today from 50 years ago and swear by them. What do you exactly mean by smeared together? There is depth in both versions. I just got both and manually duplicated Class A into the original Green. I learned a lot from this process and realized how much I like the original! I have the same Slate plugins from 2010 that I use today in confidence as I’m sure a lot of other professionals do. Please feel free to DM me with questions, concerns or comments anytime. Totally agree, not sure why people are saying they can't hear a difference. I own them both and it's night and day. If you are just a new mix engineer I can see why you may not be able to hear it only because you don't know what to listen for. But if you're a mastering engineer you can hear the depth. It's like looking at the ocean or looking at a photo of the ocean. They look the same but only 1 has any real depth. That's the only way I can explain it. Which is also the difference between a lot of plugins and analog. Class A has this depth, like Acustica Audio does.

for real? So you ask me how do i know the difference between analog and digital in this very chance? I mean, do you really think i've never tried analog before?, lets say, at school, working in studios? i mean, do you actually imply we all live in a small little bubble with not a single chance to get our hands in any analog gear by these days, or at least once in our lives? Or is it so hard to you to understand what the difference between emulation and actual circuitry is no matters what? You may want to go back to school for some ear training then, please!. So yes, I actually do not own a master compressor, but I work with them very often (SPL, the phoenix and MLA2) as I also own some decent gear at home apart of some great emulations as well (UAD, Brainworx, etc), I just cannot afford a Mastering one for me, that was the point! oh yeah, and so it was to say this plugins still sound plain to me and to many many others around the globe, so anyways, thanks for your "advice" and for assuming I am any sort of a miserable little neophyte rat behind my screen. I´ll stick to what is obvious and undeniable; it was before and still it is today: "digital is amazing, but will never EVER replace cables, capacitors, transformers, chips, valves, and yet even better PHYSICS". I believe some awesome results will improve in the digital domain in the years to come though. Have a very nice day.

@@b.f.m.1906 I appreciate your passionate reply. I also am very passionate about analog gear as I own analog gear: Neve, Avalon, MOOG, Dave Smith, etc and their digital emulations. It’s fun to compare and experiment with both. This is why we are having this discussion. I’m not one to argue, I would rather encourage people to try both analog and digital for themselves, forming there own opinions. Sometimes these posts can discourage new experiences. The video was meant to compare the Class A version to the classic version, not compare the raw signal to the compressed. I would also argue that a lot of the sound of the compressor results from the modeled components, not just the sound of the gain reduction. I hear a lot of difference between the two compressors.
