UAW Strike: GM in ‘most vulnerable position,’ analyst says

The United Auto Workers strike deadline against the Big Three automakers, Ford (F), General Motors (GM), and Stellantis (STLA), is just over 24 hours away. CFRA Equity Analyst Garret Nelson joins Yahoo Finance Live anchors Seana Smith and Akiko Fujita to discuss how the potential strike will impact the automakers and other companies, such as suppliers. Nelson says, “it’s nearly 100% certainty that there is going to be a strike,” but the big question is will “the UAW strike one company, would they strike all three, or specific plants? And the latest chatter is that they’re likely to strike specific plants.” Nelson notes that “General Motors is in the most vulnerable position... because of their inventory.” Nelson explains how GM has reportedly “made the most generous offer” recently and seems “to be making more concessions” compared to Ford or Stellantis because GM’s inventories are “much lower across their four major brands, Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC, than the inventories of any of the Ford or Stellantis brands.” Nelson adds that Magna International (MGA) and Lear Corporation (LEA) are “most at risk” from a strike because of their degree of exposure to the Big Three. Whereas, Tesla (TSLA) would be “the big winner” from a UAW strike.

Labor wages are only 4-5% of the Big 3's expenses. My God, give these people a raise! Those vehicle prices shouldn't increase, even if the UAW asked for a 50% raise. Corporate America is greedy! Let all those Big 3's office people work a few days on an assembly line......

These companies already have massive debts and low profitability. If 10% of their revenue is actual profit then you are making them sacrifice half of their profits for a wage raise that wont increase productivity at all. The UAW will be the death of these companies.

@Victor-vj5ds They have money to burn for Wall Street investments($9B). Hundreds of millions for CEO's salaries(GM's Mrs. Barra made $200M in the last 5 years). For fifty years, this storm has been brewing. The unprecedented wealth equality is destroying this nation. Anybody who does not see this is a fool.......

Agree or disagree with the demands.. The creation of the middle class is because of this! This gives bargining power to ALL employees!

As soon as the workers get an agreement the big 3 will automate their factories and eliminate 95% of all of the workers. Poof! This will end all of their problems. Machines won’t talk back, demand high pay and most importantly, they won’t strike.

@@CaptainsSensible . The technicians that repair the automated machines can also unionize. The point is that it takes people to operate companies. CEOs alone don't run companies but act like they do.

Remember when GM ( M-Barra ) shut-down production for a total of 6 weeks in March and April 2023 at the Silao and Fort Wayne plants? It was purposely done in order to artificially keep prices high for the vehicles. 6 months later it came back and bit her in the @-ss ! That's how far into the future this new "Cadre" of CEOs and Wall-Streeters operate. They can't see, and let alone plan for more than 3 months at the time. It's all about the quarterly reports ( Short term gains ). The new generation of "Managers" suffer from Myopic Strategic Syndrome and Media Hyper-sensionalism. The only one item CEOs plan for the future, is their Multi-Million Dollar salaries. For them, is like winning the lottery 5 + Years in a row, while the quality of the products they sell becomes inferior with every passing year. Remember, Those Multi-Million CEO salaries come at the expense of inferior quality products ( Cheaper & weaker metals and assembly plastics ) as well as lower wages for the workers, and higher prices for the vehicles they sell.

The UAW is the reason why American cars are considered a joke and a big reason why everyone is buying up Teslas. The only thing this will lead to is the American taxpayer paying your salary.
