Today we're looking at another electric bike. This one comes to us from UBCO, a New Zealand company looking to make strides in the mobility space with its 2x2 utility bike. The UBCO 2x2 is smartly designed and works well for its intended use; helping ranchers on farms, military use, and as a general stout runabout town machine. How does it do when pushed? Well... we've got a very long video here for you to find out.
I take the UBCO 2x2 up part of the Maple Springs Truck Trail. It doesn't love the climb, as the motors soon become a bit hot. But the rest of the ride is great, and I can see this machine excelling when used as intended. It's well built, stout, useful, and smartly designed. And I can't wait to see more offerings from UBCO in the future.

This is a long one, I don't know how I let it go that long but I felt like the stuff I kept in at least makes sense for what I'm trying to convey as it pertains to this bike. I used it in a manner in which it's not designed. In all other cases, it performed great.

I liked you doing it more than “someone who knows what they’re doing” because that makes you a better surrogate for us and what our experience on the thing would be. At the same time, I wish you did have all day so we could see what you went through to get to the top. Would have made a compelling video.

Thanks for the uphill test... That told me what I wanted to know. I'm 150lbs and I know if I loaded the Ubco with camping gear and went up some single track trails I like, the Ubco would not be happy. For me, the Rokon is the better choice for what I want out of a 2X2 utility bike.

The model reviewed is the 2018 model. The newest version, 2021 models have big improvements for climbing and distance. Better torque and motor cooling, better switches, keyless fob, adjustable regen, better waterproofing, larger battery capacity options, stronger frame reinforcements and more. The bike is a mule.And the battery can be used as an external powersource to run or charge other DC equipment in the field. Sure it's not a motorcycle, it's not intended to be. It's a tool for everyday use, any time of the year, anywhere. Snow, sand or street.

On a motorcycle the front brake is on the right side the left would be the clutch but without the need for one the rear brake is on the left. Mountain bikes are the reverse of the norm

In many European countries bicycles they have the front break on the left and the rear on the right..but M Cycles follow the standard layout.. this has rear left front right.. some millitary bikes have left hand throttles or foot throttles.. so a rider can shoot right handed 😬
@LookoutLance
@LookoutLance Год назад
In AOTEAROA (or New Zealand ) the brakes are on the left side for rear brake on bicycles . This was probably because we ride and drive on the left side of the road.

I've had one for close to 2 yrs now and also a little bummed with climbing performance but overall like it lots. I have a KTM 300 for serious stuff. I have a little property and its constantly in use. I find it great for slow speed balance/trials type stuff

Like how the bike looks, very cool. I'm into shopping around for some great bike tires and want to know what type are those? And are there any other ones that you could recommend that's similar or better that's able to handle those type of dirt roads terrans and city streets also?

The bike has gone a radical slim down in design then when it first came out. It’s been commercialized is what I think. I remember seeing the bike when it was initially presented with story line Australia. The bike was beefier and was going through paces in the outback with ranch scene etc. It was marketed for rancher’s as you said. This bike is going to the e-bike commercial rider market. The Tektro brakes is a bad sign. To be clear at $7000. this bike should climb that hill. Again at $7000. a pop the bike should have climbed that hill.

Here's an idea how about rigging up some improvised air scoops with some funnels or plastic bottle tops? I had a Volkswagen Rabbit that the starter would get hot on the highway and when you stop for gas it would refuse to start until the engine cooled off... Solved it with some corrugated metal pipe and a funnel and some tie wire to make a scoop to blow air over the starter and solenoid... anyway in this case I'm picturing some kind of Outrigger intake system looking thing that just blows air over the motors without getting tangled up in the spokes? With today's zip-tied technology and Gorilla Glue duct tape how can you go wrong?

Kinda sounds like it needs gears. My mid-drive e-bike was great (when I still had a rear cassette) for climbing hills even with it's peak 14-1500w output. I went to a straight single speed setup since most of my travel is around town or not across overly hilly areas.

It sounds like these motors need a cooling fin on them like an aluminum bolt on disk brake disk just for added cooling so it does not rely on an almost shutdown mode to protect the motors from overheat ...

The ability for e motorcycles to climb hills is key for them to be useful in most towns. Its hard to know how steep the hill is on this clip.
@peterwrench4416
@peterwrench4416 3 года назад
Yeah looked to buy one for my work, unfortunately it involves a lot of hilly country. To be fair the Ubco Rep was straight up about it not being that effective on the steep stuff. I'll have to check out the very latest generation to see if they've improved in that area.

If it’s not good on steep stuff, why the expense and extra power drain of the front wheel drive?

The brake levers are opposite because they drive/ride on the opposite side of the road allowing you to signal a turn while grabbing the rear brake.

2 Motors is more about not getting stuck... and that's where the advantages stop
@andrewhall703
@andrewhall703 Год назад
Two motors is more about overcoming the torque limits from hub motors. Imagine having one of these motors instead of two. You wouldn't have enough torque to do anything except cruise around town. Motor power is torque x speed. A hub motor has to spin slowly to produce reasonable wheel speeds. Since the motor can't have speed, it therefore must be physically big and pull big current to produce torque. These UBCO hubs have a 5:1 gear reduction inside but that's not enough. Having this much hub weight in the wheels is already punishing for the suspension and for the rider. A small 4kW motor spinning at 6000RPM mounted on the frame geared down 20:1 is smaller and lighter while delivering more torque to the wheel. Remember that FWD only helps when there is enough weight on the wheel for it not to spin. This isn't the case when you're climbing a steep hill. Therefore 2WD is more useful for mud and snow... but in those conditions your range is going to suffer significantly. This is also why an electric Rokon doesn't make much sense. UBCO probably reverses up a hill better than any other motorcycle though.😆

The brakes on opposite sides than you're used to is common in parts of Europe and presumably also NZ. I know in the UK bikes usually ship with them switched opposite of what we are used to in the US.

Seems weird that such a utilitarian bike is so under-powered. The sur ron while being a lot cheaper will crap all over it, but it doesn't have the same ability to transport stuff with regards to trays etc, but then again the UBCO wouldn't be able to handle much load anyway.. yeah it is cool and all, but not really practical for anything other than traveling in flat cities.
