This is Part two of a Two-part series about shooting paper cartridges in an Ubereti replica of Remington’s Revolving carbine.
In part One I’ll be making a supply of .44 caliber paper cartridges using Dustin Winegar’s cartridge former kit. Dustin is the host of the Guns of the West RU-vid channel.
In Part Two, we’ll head out to the range, and shoot paper cartridges in the Revolving Carbine.

I would love to see a side by side of the ballistics of this vs the handgun version and compare how much more accuracy and FPE you get with the longer barrell.

When I was a kid in the early '60's I had a toy version of one of these. It shot reloadable cartridges that had metal cases with springs inside and plastic bullets. for the bang they used greenie stickum caps. It would shoot the "bullets" about fifteen feet. I think it was made by Mattel. I'd bet it would be worth a lot to a toy collector.

It was called a "shoot-n-shell". I had one of these too at about the same time. I had a couple of Mattel guns that used them (Fanner 50, and I cant remember what else). Loved greenie stickum caps.

In the early seventies, the was a gun shop here in Denver called Old West Arms. It was the first place I had seen that specialized in black powder weapons. I bought one of these revolving carbines at that store. About once a month the store had a shot out near where Bandimere speedway is today. A hundred or so black powder junkies would show up and compete with each other. One of those events was called the "stake shoot". A 2x2 was driven into the ground an teams of guys would shoot their Hawkins or Springfields from 25 yards at it until until it was cut off. I was a team by myself with the revolving carbine. Most times my stake would fall before I ran two cylinders. That would take me less than a minute because I had two cylinders. The single shot guy's would likely still be shooting 5 minutes later. I shot in that competition only 2 or 3 times and then took myself out. The only way they could compete with me was if they all (4 or 5 guys) shot at the same time.
@mikepurswell3814
@mikepurswell3814 3 года назад
BTW. I found I shot better and was much more comfortable and steadying instead of placing my off hand beneath my trigger hand, I just folded my arms. Right hand on the trigger, left hand gripping my right shoulder. Try it and let me know what you think. M

I have owned two of these(because some ears ago I had to sell most of my guns as I needed money. The firs tone I only shot with RBs byut it was always efficient. The second one came with a weak mainspring and used to misfire a lot until I made a new sprig for it. I use my carbine in the rifle section of sass shoots with cincials in cartridges...... I load 4 in the firearm and carry a loaded and capped cylinder with all six loaded and change cylinders. It is accurate and dependable. I love it. Quite powerful too, the velocities are interesting.....

I've always like the idea of a revolving carbine. I ended up buying a used Rossi Circuit Judge at the beginning of tje panic. It's a fun gun (has an issue or two) but the lack of ammo has slowed me down in using it more. I wish there were more modern revolving rifles out there
@deandeann1541
@deandeann1541 3 года назад
.45 Colt is about the funnest, easiest round to reload there is. You should seriously consider investing in a basic Lee reloading set up. .45 Colt has a huge amount of available load recipes in most of the available pistol powders. To save money, the diameter is the same as .45ACP so the cost of bullets can be kept low. The round is an old design, so home cast lead bullets, if you should choose to make them, work well (it is what was originally used). For the same reason,black powder works well due to the rounds large capacity.You can even make your own black powder for about $4 a pound. To start, for the first powder, I suggest Alliant Unique or Hodgton Universal (Universal is very nearly the same as Unique as far as burning rate and wide ranging usefulness go - Universal is a bit cleaner burning and easier to weigh though). For a first bullet I suggest 200 grain .45acp for plinking, target and small game, since it is widely available and inexpensive and works fine. For large game I suggest 300 grain Keith style bullets since they are extremely effevtive and well proven. Molds for both gullets are available from Lee if you are interested in casting. The 200 grain mold stretches your lead quite a lot.

Great video Mike, I would like to have one of those myself. You mentioned that Remington wound up turning these percussion rifles into cartridge conversions in 38 caliber as the originals were chambered in 36 caliber. I would like to see Uberti make a variation of this carbine in the cartridge conversion form maybe in the original 38 caliber as well as the 44/45 caliber. I believe it would have a good demand especially to those who would buy this carbine only to use a cartridge conversion cylinder from Taylors, to shoot metallic cartridges anyway. Plus it would fill part of that historic gap between percussion and cartridge firearms like the Remington New Model Army/Navy, and the Colt Richard-Masons conversions which both Uberti and Pietta currently make and offer. This would be more historically accurate representation than the Colt revolving 1873 carbine offered by Taylors and Cimarron. Someone like You Mike, might have enough influence to make it happen. Thank You for your great informative and always entertaining videos, look forward to seeing Evil Roy being run out of the Den again.

Mike, are you going to do the calendars again this year?
@duelist1954
@duelist1954 3 года назад
I’m sorry to say that there won't be a calendar this year. For two years I had a contract from Bic Graphics to photograph and write an antique firearms calendars that they sold to professionals and businesses. As part of my compensation I received 300 calendars for my use, in lieu of some of my monetary fee. That allowed me to get calendars for fans at a cost of about $5 each to me. Mail and packaging cost me another $2.75, so I could offer a calendar for $10 bucks and be three dollars to the good...minus the cost of making up for lost shipments, etc. In terms of my time, packaging, maintaining a database and running to the P.O., I was probably losing money, but it was no big deal. After the 2020 calendar, Bic decided not to renew the contract due to negative feedback over having a gun calendar in their line-up. Without Bic, if I made a calendar strictly on my own, each calendar would cost me about $25 to $35 dollars. I'd have to sell them for $40 each, and I doubt that many people would want one at that price. Typically, at $10 each, I only sold 200 to 250 calendars, out of the $300 I bought from Bic each year. So, I basically operated at a loss, even at $10 each. But, if I ordered 200 calendars at $25 each, and only sold 150 of them, I'd be $1,200 in the hole, right off the bat. And, at $40 per calendar, I think sales of even 150 calendars is wildly optimistic. So, it just doesn't make financial sense to go forward on my own.
