Animals have immune systems to fight diseases, but how do plants defend themselves when they get infected? Changes in gene expression enable the plant to fight back and establish long-term immunity to future attacks. Understanding these processes are important if we are to protect crops from diseases and pests.

Speaker profile: Steven Spoel is Head of Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences and Professor of Cell Signalling and Proteostasis at the University of Edinburgh. The Spoel Lab aims to understand the mechanisms that govern the activation of gene expression by gene activators in plants.
