Ubisoft's Storytelling has REGRESSED...

Ubisoft games have never really been known for their masterful storytelling but as someone who's played Ubisoft games for a long time I've noticed a very clear regression in Ubisoft's ability to tell good stories in their games. While of course there are some rare exceptions I find that most Ubisoft games from 9-10+ years ago have far superior storytelling than what they've produced in more recent years. In this video I talk about how exactly they've regressed and what can potentially be done to fix this issue, because afterall stories are so crucial to any single-player narrative-driven experience...

Even Ubisoft's cutscene direction, and little things like the framing and camera work has largely taken a step back, IMO, which has negatively impacted their storytelling. And with games like AC being so big now, they can't invest in top notch facial animations like they once had in games like AC Unity and Watch Dogs 2.

The thing that I get most frustrated within the Assassin's Creed franchise is new protagonists are introduced just for their stories to be incomplete. Protagonists such as Arno and Connor deserved at least a sequel game to finish their stories.

The main questions a writing team should ask before making a game/film is 'why does this story need to be told?' 'What does it add to the series, characters and what does it give to the audience?' Most sequels are not necessary and that also creates the hollow feeling around games as they add nothing to the series there apart of. A story should have multiple layers of storytelling and that makes it quality and timeless. I think also the lack of new IPs and just sticking to ones that are financially successful (safe bet) is a huge problem across all creative industries at the moment. Keep up the great work as always MasterAssassin

AC Origins was probably one of the more recent games (though released in 2017) which had genuinely good story in both main and side quests. Other than that most modern Ubisoft games feel mediocre at best, generic and uninteresting, while older ubi games had deep and emotional stories...wonder what happened...
@ac_nerd9794
@ac_nerd9794 7 месяцев назад
I mean Odyssey had a genuinely good story. Its had some bad writing and the gameplay wasn't as special as Origins in my book, but the main story is genuinely pretty good. Most people that play it will probably pick specific options through every time. The side quests were also on a spectrum from crazy and hilarious to sad and mysterious. It's a little step down from Origins but it is very good. Also, does nobody else like Far Cry Primal? For a caveman game, I found it to be amazing in the story direction. I think people tend to just hate because they don't like the game's direction. I expected Valhalla to be a Viking game in Assassin's Creed. When I played through it though, I had no idea I would be playing an actual Saga that would take forever. I also think some fans just completely disrespect others based on their tastes. You don't like it but I do. That doesn't make either of us wrong.
@stevenmoinian5511
@stevenmoinian5511 7 месяцев назад
@@ac_nerd9794 Yes, you make some good points. I do like far cry primal a lot too, should've mentioned it perhaps, it was a very unique game as well. As for Odyssey, in retrospect I guess the story was decent, but yeah, I didn't find it particularly memorable and it just didn't hit me the same way Origins did. It was also extremely long, because of which I left it in middle for a month or two and then came back to finish it. That probably hurt my experience with the story as well. Maybe I should give it another try...I never could finish Valhalla though, I have at this point taken multiple breaks from Valhalla (started playing in 2021), so I cannot really say anything definitively about its story yet Edit: I was also very salty at the time of Odyssey's release because it wasn't an assassin's creed story, so that probably further hurt my experience...that is completely on me though, so yeah, I guess I should give it another chance one of these days
@ac_nerd9794
@ac_nerd9794 7 месяцев назад
@@stevenmoinian5511 I think you should look at it as an AC game with different lore. The game takes place centuries before Bayek and Aya found the Hidden Ones. It's also worth noting Alexios or Kassandra are proto-assassins so them doing some things differently shouldn't make them terrible as they follow their own rules.Yes, it is long but for me I poured hours into exploring the world so I was leveled up without feeling tired. I can also say if you ever do a new game+, the game as a whole feels completely different because the entire story can be played without a single side quest. I have done everything for Valhalla except the last 2 master achievements on Xbox. If the game wasn't so long, I wouldn't be bothered as much but other games are very long as well so I didn't mind. Odyssey is long for some but I know that there are lots of people that love it as much or more than Black Flag because it owns what it is doing, giving players an RPG set in Ancient Greece in the AC universe.

Not only Ubisoft but many other developers, the problem is, before you had people who were actually fans of a franchises working on them and were decision makers, these days people in charge of these projects have barely even played any game of that franchise and they try to change them to suit their taste more, rather than following the core formula that the actual fans actually love and want and what the franchise have always been about, not even going to mention how the games by "western" studios are broken and unoptimized, sadly these days game developers are not hiring people for their skill, but for their real-life "social diversity".

Another issues with modern Ubisoft writing is they are trying to make it inoffensive, and you it is hard to write a good story when they are afraid of offending people now. This is why the newer AC games feels so neutered and moved away from the conspiracy theory stuff and why they killed Watchdogs, this has been proven when they removed/changed stuff from WD:L and AC: Valhalla because someone got offended by those small things. Cutscenes don’t look as good as they used to with does affect storytelling. The lighter tone is affecting that aswell.

Yeah, good you mentioned Valhalla. I remember that they changed the description of one mercenary because some Karen on Twitter complained that the line about the mercenary hiding her face because of her severe burns may be harmful to people with such scars. I mean, that person probably haven't even played the damn game, she just saw it somewhere and yet complained about it. Ubisoft should say that they don't care, that it's a game fiction and that would end the conversation. Hell, I also have a burn scar on my hand because of my cousin but I never looked at that line and thought that it's offensive to me. Ubisoft should accept that today people are offended by EVERYTHING. If they tried to please everyone, they would please nobody.
@redcobra6016
@redcobra6016 7 месяцев назад
@@MultiKamil97 I forgot which character who’s description was changed, I’m wondering if they actually ended up changing it, because it turned out that Karen was just pretending to get offended so they could piss people off. It is even mind boggling that they bend the knee to that Karen but sweep allegations of abuse under the rug. I do believe the allegations against them may be a factor into why they chose to go soft. The second possible factor may be ESG.

That's also why they added in either a male or female character in every game. But even that waters the story down because you never know what is the real version or who the real hero is. It's also why the Judge in FC New Dawn is mute because there's no way to know if you picked a male or female character in FC5. Not that it mattered anyway considering you couldn't even see your character. They're afraid to have a story that says, "This is the story about A MAN who has to overcome something."

I think Far Cry is the one Ubisoft franchise that seriously needs a makeover. Literally, they're using the same engine and the same gameplay formula in Far Cry since Far Cry 3. The last Far Cry that wasn't afraid to innovate was Far Cry 2 (and arguably Primal which didn't sell well). Why do I think Far Cry needs a makeover? Well, look at Ghost Recon Wildlands. Wildlands outdoes Far Cry in nearly every aspect and it came out before Far Cry 5. Why couldn't Wildlands be the next evolution of Far Cry? Another thing, Wildlands takes itself seriously, more so than almost any other Ubisoft game that released and I love it for that.

Modern cinema and games don't want to write endings because that means they have to stop trying to milk their bland non-ending, unsatisfying tale for every last drop of money. But of course, we the audience don't like any of it because there is no cathartic ending. They are destroying themselves.

I like that you mentioned Far Cry 6. While I enjoyed the gameplay and some side quests, the idea of having Zoomers as the members of resistance movement was just... stupid, for the lack of better word. I couldn't believe that people who behaved and looked like Yelena or Jonrón were able to participate in firefights with royal soldiers. El Tigre and the old veterans were believable while La Moral felt like a bunch of Zoomers who would just use social media to fight the president, not guns. They didn't even use any body armour during missions, they went to fight wearing things that I would put on myself after work to feel more comfortable. The whole idea of this young, resistance group just felt kinda cringy and unbelievable. I wouldn't ever look at them and say something like "Yeah, they look like they are ready to fight president and his soldiers". The main story was just incredibly goofy because of that. What's worse is that we also had a hip-hop group where one guy was even a trans person. I just even stopped thinking at one point if it makes sense at all.

I think the main problem with ubisoft is the people who work there, every other problem is a symptom. They really don't care about keeping their talents and they have lost so many creative people in 2010s. Just look at directors, writers and producers of the first AC games; people like Patrice Desilets, Jade Raymond, Corey May, and even Alex Amancio are not working on AC anymore.

They have differnt Writers and another issue is the focus on player freedom means they offten can not set up a great story moment. Freedom is great but there certain times were a mission may need to be more linear for story telling purposes also sometimes having a few linear missions can allow them to have unique gameplay elements. Kingdom come shows you can do all 3 of these things but The issue is its really tough to pull off. While Ubiosft games may let you go to bandit camp and clear it using stealth or combat, this Is basically the only types of missions you have in modern ubisoft games.

I definitely feel like it has regressed. I’m like such a fanboy about Assassins creed that I just eat up all the new games still and enjoy them a lot but they also just don’t have as much stick around power anymore. When they’re over I don’t want to replay, but I replay the old ones basically every year up to Origins. So really only Odyssey and Valhalla, but I’m really still excited for AC Red because it feels like the game with rumored the most improvements it sounds like that I would enjoy but that says nothing about the story, I’m at least excited that they both exist and I can play as both and they both protagonist really influence the world apparently.

The first two Watch Dogs were incredible. I didn't play Legion but it was a step down from the previous games, according to what I've seen. And to answer your question, yes the universes are connected. I'm not sure if I like that much at all though, because the mystery and seriousness of the first Assassin's Creed games were abandoned, so the story does not have as much impact.

I don’t think it’s just Ubisoft. As games get more and more expensive to make, they have become a lot safer, with generic stories that try and appeal to the largest audience possible with the least potentially ‘offensive’ content. Sony has a similar problem in their games as well. Sony’s games are graphically great, and the stories are fine, but they just don’t really resonate the way a lot of older games used to despite exposition becoming longer than ever. You see this across the board in the industry. And a big concern is that GTA will go this route as well now. And of course different writers pumping out sequels rather than making passion projects is going to lead to a blander end product. It’s why games like AC or Horizon Forbidden West look amazing, but have boring forgettable stories. Studios are afraid to tell unique stories these days because the loss is so much greater if they don’t hit the mark. A generic story may have some players lose interest but the average casual player isn’t going to care. And we are kind still in the graphics over story and gameplay era and that seems to be where most games spend their budgets in the triple A space. It’s rare we get a solid mix of all 3 anymore. It’s also really hard to tell a tight linear story in an open world format that gives players any freedom at all. So I do think that is also a driving force as to why open world games especially feel so formulaic. You can’t have real stakes when a player could skip content, or play it in any order. It essentially has to be generic or on rails. Or I guess it doesn’t have to be. But man devs have not figure that out yet that’s for sure.

Yes, the reason being Ubisoft is a much larger company spending more money in games than before, therefore they focus on taking less risks. This is why you will never see a story like AC2. The comedy thing is not so much Marvel but more of a millenial writing issue.
@redcobra6016
@redcobra6016 7 месяцев назад
I believe the comedy thing with Ubisoft games along with a lot of other entertainment is a result of them trying to copy the MCU. And unfortunately that is not the only thing gaming companies are trying to copy from the MCU, they are putting the Killmonger hairstyle on almost every black character along with the protagonist of the new Prince of Persia game.

Valhalla didn’t really even have a story in my opinion. It was just raid this, build an alliance here, repeat. And then Eivor never even remotely becomes an assassin. All their titles would seem Decent and Fun for a new player. Imagine you've never played farcry and your first experience was Farcry 6. You'd probably enjoy it. In my opinion the problem is not so much in their games or stories , it's the fact that they are afraid to move out of the Safe Zone and try new things with their titles. I'd like to see then with a brand new IP , you can only tell Assasssins Creed or Farcry stories for so long. They are just in Copy and Paste mode. Minimal effort , minimal investment and decent profit is where AAA studios are these days. Big risk and big investment in things like cinematics = more money they have to make just to break even, and with risk comes the chance of big failure, and most corporations in any industry just Play it Safe.

Now i know english,but whenever there is a skip button i press it as fast as i can. For me Tlou2 was a masterpiece,i didn't care for any of the characters,i've read books with more interesting drama and main characters that got killed in first chapter than TLOU2 story,even first game. Why i point TLOU2 and 1,well because both games won so many awards. I finished Odyssey with DLC/ng+ and all too many times,400h+ each time skip dialog,choose the yellow option,skip trough cinematics.

@@whitewolf1028 I don't have patience to wait for all the bla bla,i skip the cinematics where is possible. Not allways,not for any game i skip, but in most games i care more for the gameplay. I know what i have to do for specific game,like i know how to read objectives(for example in AC odyssey i got a mission where i had to collect some ingredients for some love potion to make a old woman feel "young" able to have fun again,i skipped trough dialog and choosed all the options so that i have all the clues in top corner,under objective). I find some games to have so much talk and less action. In Alan Wake 2 i watch the cinematics because otherwise i don't understand what to do,it's made like that. Ghost of Tsushima was a pain for me,because i was bored to death by me having to listen to every dialogue that i didn't care. I watch movies without subtitles,i listen english music and i understand every word but for games,especially AC series,i skip,i leave those Isu cinematics,i find them OK. Imagine playing AC Valhalla and have 100% completion with leaving every line and every cinematic,instead having 160h(that much i had after 100%+all dlc's) to have more than 300+. Patience,i lack,patience in games,when i started gaming Cinematics were some Text and the rest was gameplay,nowdays that text is replaced by cinematics and too much bla bla i don't care. Sorry for this long comment,if reading this was tidious,that is what i feel when i see an unskippable cinematic.

I recently played Mirage, Unity, and AC III all right around Christmas. Unity had some of the most flair in its movement but Arno has got to be the dumbest AC protagonist. Mirage was overly simplistic to the point that I actually had a poor time running around because of the epic change; the combat and stealth mostly sucked with me being spotted thru walls and the enemies just being made up of paper; the story was boring and I felt second hand embarrassment towards the presented culture which is naturally beautiful and instead the main character lacks in said beauty (tho Basim isn't braindead like some of AC's heroes). ACIII's story was completely engaging; I played the remastered version but I didn't get a lot of bugs unlike the previously mentioned two; the combat was superb, up there with Arkham, I only had a handful of problems where counters didn't seem to do anything. I also like how Connor can climb trees whilst Haytham cannot - why can Arno? Generally enjoyed the oldest moreso than the more recent.

The issue with at least far cry is twofold. For one they obviously keep chasing the villain with gravitas that vaas was rather than making fun different stories like they should and it’s just not working. However that is the second issue in and of itself because for those who weren’t aware they didn’t make vaas in the first place😂😂😂. It’s a cyberpunk type scenario where the villain was just Hoyt until Michael mando showed up with vaas and they decided to put him in the game, so essentially it’s like how can you recreate something you never created? Obviously they can’t😂. When you look at far cry 3 as if it was the same just without vaas and compare it to the other far crys old and new it really makes sense how they’ve gotten so bad. The original far cry 3 was going to be as bland as the ones we’ve gotten since then, however I do like Hoyt and if the reality where vaas didn’t happen existed now I think there’s an argument that the next far cry’s might have been better than the ones we got in this reality. Who knows?🤷🏽‍♂️

There’s an academic theory that there are only 7 stories to be told in all of literature, and everything else is only variations. With regard to video games, we should remember that this shit is not even literature, just kiddy comic book stuff, and probably shouldn’t be looked at too hard. It’s just an excuse to get you to enjoy the traversal-combat-progression gameplay loop, a reason to run, jump, and shoot things. That said, there are exceptionally story heavy games, but they usually trade off replayability (as you already know what happens) gameplay mechanics, or player choice (stories are linear by nature, and to tell a great story you have to railroad the player down specific lines, use a lot of cut scenes, etc.) Personally, if I want great story I’d rather watch a movie or something. In a video game, just give me fun gameplay. But to each their own. Coincidentally, I just finished playing AC Unity and started Watchdogs Legions, and I was thinking today that Ubisoft seems to have only 1 story to tell-plucky rebels fighting against the system. Watchdogs, AC, Ghost Recon games all fit this description. I guess it just fits in well with their formula, where to go region by region achieving sub goals before going after bigger goals, etc. I’m ok with that; I know what I’m going to get with Ubisoft, and like I said above, look at story as an excuse to run and jump and shoot things.
