The 3 months between Dec 1940 and Feb 1941 was the worst yet for the British. The allies lost over a million tons of shipping in exchange the Germans lost zero Uboats. While these real world (revised post-war) statistics are shocking, they help paint a picture why Churchill / UK was so worried about the Uboat fleet.
In reality the UK were convinced they had sunk Uboats both Decemeber and Jan, but this wasn't the case. This really was the "happy times" that Uboat Captains would soon long for.
