@@CyberPunkEdu just look at the absolute shithole Linux desktop environments have become because of user choice, everyone forking everything and scrapping everything to make a new one every few months (looking at you gnome) if they focused on making a single usable one with good customisation the apps could be focused and it would lead to a better experience for the end user.
@@bigrat6030 You make a point about the granularity of the choice. OS level vs DE and tiny things make difference. It sounds like apps are really what a lot of people care about in the end, and being able to do what they need to do properly. There are a lot of opinions on what is "good" or "usable". So I think where the choice is important is the core values of the project and not so much the cosmetic stuff. The customizability can always be added later.
Good to see another commentary on UT. I tried it on a OnePlus One - before the latest update, and found it to be 'OK', but the device was a little under powered for UT. I am thinking of installing it on a OnePlus 6t for a trial run. For me, at least, the most important questions are around security and privacy and I don't find these have been addressed well enough on the UT website or in the forums. I'd be interested to know how UT compares with, say, GrapheneOS - which I have installed on a Pixel 3a, and it runs perfectly. The GrapheneOS community provide plenty of information on 'privacy and security', and I feel that many people like myself would welcome more information on these topics from the UT community. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Thanks for the comment. You address an important issue. I would say that UT in its current state and philosophy is different from GrapheneOS when it comes to privacy. While UT values the individual's privacy and rights, the approach is to give the user control of the data. With no disk encryption etc it's hard to say that UT is a "Secure" os. However, it does not rely on contacting Google and there is not much to "see" on the OS even being spied on. All devices have a weakness at the driver level, which still comes from the manufacturer. These posts explain a little bit of the story, which I believe to be accurate: forums.ubports.com/topic/6820/privacy-title?_=1650728053315&lang=en-US forums.ubports.com/topic/996/data-privacy-data-leak/3?lang=en-US forums.ubports.com/topic/7602/privacy-on-ut?lang=en-US In the end (right now), UT is really about giving control/choice back to the user more than anything. Once it progresses, I'm sure more of those privacy and security features will be addressed.
Thanks for your comment. At the moment no VOLTE, but in progress: ubports.com/de/blog/ubports-blogs-nachrichten-1/post/first-steps-in-volte-support-for-ubuntu-touch-3768 forums.ubports.com/topic/7536/volte-voice-over-long-term-evolution/5
I know, that people are getting really excited about UT even working, but I have different questions... Can I change this ,,side panel" orientation to horizontal? I like Unity layout, but on a PC... The gestures & looks are nice, but if only this panel can be horizontal... While I appreciate Ubuntu design & the fact, that they were trying Ubuntu aesthetics on mobile, I kinda like the ,,basic" layout a bit more, ore the one like in Sailfish OS. Can you change a wallpaper? I mean... Is it a fully functional experience? I honestly begin to consider getting 3a to try it. I would prefer 4a, but as far as I see It's not supported yet. Actually I would prefer to run Debian underneath, but If the most polished experience is Ubuntu I kinda don't have a choice...
Thanks for your comment. Yes, you can use a horizontal layout by rotating the device. If there are capabilities for external monitor, then it will use that layout so it feels a bit more like Ubuntu Desktop. You can change the wallpaper, and there are dark/light themes possible for the system.
@@CyberPunkEdu You didn't understand me when it comes to ,,horizontal panel". I mean - just the side panel to act, like an Android/iOS dock at the bottom. At least for me now this ,,sidebar" sliding from left seems counterintuitive. Other then that - Ubuntu Touch UI seems fine to me.
@@draxianhyserski1654 I see what you mean. At the moment you cannot move the launcher, but it is possible to build custom launchers. open-store.io/app/launchermodular.ubuntouchfr is an example
hi, great video, but is the system fhs?, are the apps compatible if they are arm or must they be compiled specifically for ubuntu touch?, docker can be used?
Yes, the system is fhs like desktop Ubuntu. But it is a bit different in that it is not writable by default. It isn't necessarily meant to be used like a usual GNU/Linux desktop system. I heard that docker doesn't work. You can run libertine containers to run "desktop" apps. The standard apps are compiled into click packages.
There is no google authenticator app for ubuntu touch, but there are other 2FA apps: open-store.io/?sort=relevance&search=authenticator If you must use the google authenticator, then it would likely work with Waydroid, but that only works on specific devices.
@@CyberPunkEdu sad :( , I think someone should invest a lot of money to make sense for ubuntu touch because companies do not create app's for UT, also there is no any flagman phone for UT , waydroid cool thing but I guess it needs very powerful cpu for smooth use
@@tyronwadley1766 Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that a big funder would help this project. At the moment UBports is working hard to get to that level I think. There needs to be a way to attract the attention of a larger entity that can provide the resources to make UT really shine.
Thanks for the comment. Battery life will depend on the device's age. Mine lasts about a day. This user reports almost 2 days on a Pixel 3a XL forums.ubports.com/topic/6603/google-pixel-3a-xl-battery-lifetime?_=1651947822001&lang=en-US Ubuntu Touch does have some power-saving features, and it really depends on how much you use the phone.
Net hunter is a better option for me because you can use a desktop version off kaly in kex manager With USB hub you can plug Mouse keyboard screen etc etc
If you are referring to Ubuntu Touch installation then please see here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CdNGSdYCaDY.html , otherwise please let me know which part wasn't working for you.
Ubuntu Touch supports that function, but most supported phones don't have the hardware capability. So I would say "no" for now, at least for the Pixel 3a. You can see some devices here support "wireless external display" devices.ubuntu-touch.io/
@@MrMrBach Sorry I didn't have the hardware to test, so I'm not sure if it actualy works. There is a bug github.com/ubports/ubuntu-touch/issues/1812 that is still open.
Have you tried STEAM? :):) Nice review, thanks for posting. I think any Linux device although has to be reviewed honestly and fairly, it should be treated a little bit specially. It should be treated more like a tablet/laptop operating system than a mobile os. After all it is a fully operationl Linux. And Linux has its laws. And I mean laws/features. The command line is not an old relic of the past, for nerds no. it is the powershell, you can connect to all neighboring devices in worldwide network using ssh and control them remotely through terminal, and complete serious jobs this way, it allows you to run all sorts of scripts that automate different tasks. You can use it as a desktop Video editing apps, Audio editing, Photo editing. etc... I am wondering not about ubuntu touch mobile capabilities, I wonder, can I run Libreoffice? Krita, Gimp, Blender, Kdenlive, okular for reading pdfs and comic books. Can it run LMMS the music creation studio? Or all useful terminal/TUI apps, like Lynx for extrafast websearches, or Nethack, Cmatrix, for some terminal fun, or can I run QUAKE using Quakespasm engine? Does Firefox work? or other browsers? Falkon, Chromium QuteBrowser... Can I multitask on it? you know, watch a video, make notes from it, edit a spreadsheet, and compile a program with gcc? you know, a programmers/hacker workflow, or graphic/video designer workflow. Also I am wondering about customizbility, can I set a tiling window manager on it? like qtile, i3. Or different Desktop Environment like XFCE, MATE? does apt package manager work? Can you change login manager? Can you clone a repo from github, build and install and run it on UT? Are there some appimages that might work? You know all the linux stuff!! And I didn't mention WINE, LUTRIS, Steam Anbox/Waydroid. I know Arm has some limitations, because many of those apps were built for different architecture, but I hear some of them have arm versions and might work, and I would like to see how ubuntu touch is different from a desktop linux! I know I am little bit spoiled and I expect from you(and from UT) to, much, but If you would like to make few more tests I would (and I think some more Linux fans too) appreciate your contribution. Linux has very powerful capabilities, and it would be awesome to see some of that power in the pocket. Not the mobile stuff. The Linux stuff!
Hello, thanks for the detailed comment, and sorry for the late reply. In its current state UT works as a mobile OS for most "normal" functions. I wouldn't rely on it for Android apps yet (STEAM, etc.). In some cases Waydroid will work for certain simple apps as a workaround, but not as a real daily driver. The same is for desktop mode; you can use it if you need a bigger screen, but it isn't quite at the point where I would rely on it for doing serious work outside of web browsing or work in the terminal. Customization of DE etc would come later after improvement has been made on the basic functions. These are all good questions. You might get more answers in forums.ubports.com/
I tried to upgrade but couldn’t get Webber or tweaks to work on my pixel 3a xl so I reverted back to 16.4 as a cell the new vertion works great but the lack of apps and Webber was to huge to get past
Did you upgrade to 20.04? I think it is not quite ready yet for most devices. It will take time for the developers of the apps to upgrade the apps as well.
Yes, you can reinstall android, but the process is a bit different. Please see this video on installing/downgrading on Pixel 3a ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CdNGSdYCaDY.html
I don't see any apps using that on Ubuntu Touch. Pixel 3a doesn't have the option in the hardware though. If your phone has an IR blaster then you may be able to use an app through Waydroid.
Yes, you can open apps via the terminal, but the command is a bit different. e.g. "ubuntu-app-launch appname" if it is one of the mobile apps , but to open desktop apps like mpv you need to install them in a libertine container first. More information is here: docs.ubports.com/en/latest/userguide/dailyuse/libertine.html?highlight=terminal#run-desktop-application Thanks for the comment. I had not thought about that before.
Officially there is no port for pixel 3xl, but there is for Pixel 3a XL. There is some development and discussion here: forums.ubports.com/category/68/google-pixel-3-3-xl
