UCI Snow Bike World Championships 2024
Drama, opinions and a lot of snow! Join me for full POV runs of both the Super G downhill race and the Dual Slalom where I was knocked out in the round of 16. Thanks to all that made this a fun weekend and shame for the lack of checks for legal bikes making it a fair race.

For those who rides in the snow its interresting, but it could be jumps to and a little more like downhill.

The spike length issue is typical UCI wish they could have added some decent jumps and maybe whoop sections, but to the UCI that would probably be to much work or deemed to dangerous
@Ganiscol
@Ganiscol 4 месяца назад
UCI regulates the spike length but never checks for compliance? There is nothing else I can think of that would have a bigger impact on performance than the length of the spikes - kinda easy to get right.

Unless it's actual ice or extremely hard packed snow (it clearly was not), the studs in the tires won't help much.....muddy conditions knobbies would really help, like a maxxis wet scream or similar tire.

If I could talk to the UCI, I'd probably ask for things to be more "skicross-like". Less gradient, more jumps and rollers and banked turns would probably do this discipline some good. Maybe have a "solo event" and a dual event.

I love your idea mate. I would definitely be keen for that 👍

@@benmooreracing - Right now it's normal alpine skiing but a lot lamer. I'm so used to "the real thing" that y'all look scared even if you're trying hard, hahaha.

So those guys with the stickers being so careful to put a sticker on your bike and wheels could so so easily had a 6mm height measure too…

awesome effort and thanks for sharing. But, this is another glaring issue with UCI in general, their lack of race monitoring/tech setup is embarrassing. Isnt that WHY they are there? For fks sake...another brilliant effort from UCI was cancelling ALL DH racing in the US for 2024. Thanks for NOTHING UCI...

It might be fun to ride but to spectate this is boring. UCI need to spice this up

Why would you run a trail bike? A fatbike would have actual grip in this stuff.
@jokermtb
@jokermtb 4 месяца назад
a fattie would actually be worse for cornering - you need the tire to dig into the snow, instead of riding on top.
@augsu
@augsu 4 месяца назад
@@jokermtb I wouldn't call that cornering! A studded fatbike tire certainly has more grip than those squirrely trenchers, and with 6 mil spikes? Fuggetaboitit!
@STEVERoten

Why uci? Why!
@jokermtb
@jokermtb 4 месяца назад
You're mistaken - the super wide cross section of a fat bike tire won't let the tire dig into the snow, or apply the maximum PSI of pressure into the snow that a narrower contact patch tire will into the snow.....Fat tires are designed not to dig into the snow - precisely what you don't want. The 6mm studs are merely there to break the crust and help the tire stay in place in a corner.@@augsu

@@jokermtb In firm snow you are correct, but this race was in mashed potato snow. I just happened to have the exact same conditions here, so I did a downhill bomb weaving like I was running gates. 24mph no tripoding, loads of control, my 48 year old butt would have dominated!! Traction in snow is a complicated matter, I groom trails for a living so I know a bit about it. You have to run the right equipment for the conditions, and in snow that can change constantly. I just finished building a Norco Bigfoot VLT with 27.5 4.5 studded tires and an EX1 drivetrain, thing is a beast. As for the "fat tires are not designed to dig into the snow", it's a little more complicated than that. In soft snow, traction comes from the friction of the facets of snow crystals. A fatbike tire gets traction from compressing the snow between the lugs. This is why sometimes there is a little slip before gaining traction, this is the snow being sheared from the base layer, once the snow builds up between the lugs the friction increases and so does traction. In firm snow the massive footprint can give exceptional grip as well, but as always lug design and tire pressure are super important. Most guys I ride with and RU-vidrs I watch don't even carry pumps, it's hard to learn the right setup for different conditions, so I think a lot of people have a crappy time from setup issues and think they're not as capable as they are. Plus most fatbikes come set up for trail riding, I had to fully rebuild my Norco to get it right.
