All the great coaches retiring have not said players should not get paid. That’s not the argument. It’s the lack of rules and Wild West of how the money is. They all should get paid and it’s the NCAA fault. Saban and the other coaches are saying High School recruits shouldn’t get $500,000 for never playing a NCAA game and you don’t know if they are going to leave and take the money after 1 year or even start in a game. They are fine with getting paid NIL offers but the players are holding coaches and teams hostage with money offers. It’s not about the game it’s how much money can I make. They all should get paid there just has to be more rules is all they are saying. Yes the coaches make ton of money and can leave the players at any point but they are employees and have contracts the players are students it’s a little different.

For decades the argument by sports analysts like Mike and coaches alike was that it's an affront to the sanctity of college athletics, they're student athletes, its not a businesd(it is), etc, etc. Now that they athletes have an avenue to some income they switched the natrative: "I'm not against athletes being paid but its too chaotic, not well thought out, etc." Its didingenuos bullshit. People like Jay Wright and others loved the old system with multimillionaire coaches roaming the sidelines in expensive Italian suits and slicked back hair while players got nothing. They preached the con about college athletics while laughing all the way to the bank, leaving players they recruited high and dry when they skipped town for even higher paying jobs without penalty...
