I owe you a thank you for referencing that video. I was not who you were responding to but its a good source and I am better after 2 minutes of watching it.
It's true, Rorion Gracie is brilliant. Firstly, he's a lawyer in Brazil. A lot of people don't know that. Also, he's one of the most charismatic people I've ever met. When he got the idea of UFC going, it was just after I'd learned some Gracie Jiu-jitsu, courtesy of Rorion Gracie and especially, Royce. One of the things that impressed me was that the Gracies and I look like we belong to the same family. We're tall and slim guys. None of them are big bulky guys, yet they can kick butt. Again though, Rorion is what sold me on Gracie Jiu-jitsu. He's just the greatest guy and I'll never stop singing his praises, or the praises of his family and their brand of Jiu-jitsu. They're all wonderful people and deserve all the success they've enjoyed over the years. They've certainly worked for it all. Thank you, Rorion Gracie for your time, help, and kindness.
one of the greatest men i have had the sincere pleasure to have as a role model in my life, truly! great video. thank you. jiu-jitsu is life, life is jiu-jitsu. have a blessed day, all.
Great, awesome, incredible! Congratulations Rorion.. And thank you very much for everything you did and still do for everyone of us, lovers of this art and life style. Maximum respect!
Once got here, registered the name Gracie and the triangle( his family logo from Brazil) under his name, and threatened to sue any sibling that used it here in the states. When Rickson got here early 80's, didnt know any english, was given docs to sings by Rorion as being papers that allowed him to teach at his gym, when in reality were docs prohibiting Rickson to fight in the us without his approval
excellent. about 2 blocks E of the carson street academy, there was a printer who did flyers and business cards etc.... they had one of the flyers on their sample wall challenging all comers. that seemed so long ago. great stuff. thanks for the upload!!! OBRIGADO!!!
A big part of that perception is because a majority of the high level fighters in the UFC (certainly the Americans) come from a wrestling background, and utilize their earlier training extremely well. In MMA I do think a serious wrestling base often leads to advantages on the ground, but the great BJJ guys can definitely compete and win. The point is, though, that BJJ WAS created for self-defense, and not for usage in a cage with certain rules and time limitations.
It depends what your definition of "effective" is, but in terms of practical self-defense, there's little denying the superiority of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
very interesting, thats the first time i saw the original garage where it all started in america.I wonder how many guys from the garage days still practise,i can think of only a handful like saunders, kama, kukuk, paulson, bressler, anderson. These would have all started training in the 80s
That's funny. I thought that Big John got his job as the ref because the first ref didn't seem to care if Ken Shamrock died in his fight against Royce. Now I know that it was actually because the first ref didn't let a guy take more punishment! Maybe the reason the guy didn't stop the fight between Royce and Ken despite about 6 taps was that Rorion got mad at him for stopping the earlier fight.
fair enough, I definitely agree that BJJ levels the playing field against a bigger and stronger opponent, however if its a high level wrestler in a cage situation then he is going to nullify BJJ by choosing to just do stand up or let it go on the ground. But yes as a self defence technique BJJ is excellent for the ground, standing not so much, maybe judo would be better as an all round martial art since it incorporates a bit of BJJ and stand up techniques
Don't think so Swift , Judo is basically a castrated form of traditional Ju-jitsu modified for sport and competition so with equal time spent in training , it can only do worse than JJ in this context unless the Judo student is of a higher skill level or with exceptional physical abilities what's great in Gracie Ju-jiutsu is that most techniques utilize less strength whereas in Judo or Wrestling , back strength and power is a huge factor
Yup! you will never understand this unless you practice Jiu-jitsu. with Jiu-jitsu you get to know your self like you never had before. give it a try and youll see
He's awesome and there's no doubt the Gracie diet and lifestyle are a net positive. Still -- avocados are NOT a great source of protein, you are getting only a meagre 2-3 grams per 100g fruit, compare that with 25g of protein packed into 100g of chicken breast OR 30g/100g for a 'can of chunk-light tuna-fish' -- it's "no contest"... Soy, at a WHOPPING 30-35g per 100g or Chia, at 17g/100g are better meatless alternatives. Avocados have other things going for them, just not really a great protein source. You would need to eat 10-15 to match the amino acid content of a small can of tuna.
First BJJ is not grappling like wresting . It is basic done on the ground , the difference is when you are defending yourself is to finish as quick as you can . Arm , legs , hands and head locks or neck to put the guy to sleep and many others , there is no punch . When nobody knew BJJ Royce prove that was the best self defense art . The guy weight 72 kg and just run over everybody , guys three times bigger heavier and all that in the same day . Dan Henderson an Olympic wrestler lost twice for him . The last one took 15 minutes and Royce was taking a pretty bad beating since UFC had no rounds at the time , and to win you had to win three fights in the same day . Well Dan was all over him when Royce somehow got him with his legs and Dan tap out That was back in 92 Search and see . That is when everybody was asking ,,,what the fuck is that ...That was how BJJ appear for the world . Today all these fighters learn how to use . Today all these guys know all types of martial art , even Brazilians learn wresting , May tay . Boxing ; It is MMA . Please don`t think that what i wrote had any kind of bad intentions towards you . Take care and Merry Christmas
Before people here hate and start to badmouth what i wrote, watch the documentary "gracies and the birth of Vale Tudo", and understand what really happened instead of the stuff we all see around the web. JJ being taught around the world would happen sooner or later, Rorion came first, but trying to screw his family over what is equally theirs is fucking wrong. Im glad he sold the UFC for 2 million and now its worth 9 bil. Thats karma bittimg him at the ass
