The worst crime the British "empire" committed on Irish soil was the death of one of the oldest languages in the world.They knew that the one true way to enslave a people is to force them to speak a foriegn language(speaking Irish in public was a death sentence not too long ago).I only can hope that the Irish language can find a way back because it is a rare gem in the Irish treasure that is our island.....the whole of our island including our brothers and sisters still under tyranny in the north.Tiocfaidh ar la

English is Germanic it's a saxonic language It's also one of the oldest language And it isn't dead since people are still speaking it Like Frisian which is also one of the oldest Germanic languages
@50nuccio
@50nuccio 7 лет назад
English belongs to the Germanic branch of the IE tree, no doubt. But the English we know isn't that old. It's a mash-up of Old English (TRULY a Germanic lang.) and French (after the Norman Conquest) with lots of Latin loanwords (and loanwords from other languages). Add in the "great vowel shift" in the 1400's -- why our vowels are pronounces so differently from almost all other European languages -- and you get Modern English, from about 1500 to today. Interestingly enough, the more basic the things you talk about (blood, house, father, love, life, death, fight) the more Germanic the vocabulary -- the more "artistic" or "scientific" the conversation, the more French, Latin, Greek come into play.

The magnificent creep I'm half south -west European Dutch/Frisian But I'm born in The Hague And half South American creol which is black The real first black people So I'm the purest from of white and black in one body However the Irish where once Gaelic people Invaded by the normans in the 5th century They were more considered as outsiders They are Gaelic/normans they are white. However just like all the Germanic tribes Very isolated .. but they are white. I am a real Rhine land bastard Hitler would call me that hehehe A real half blood the abomination of Europa So I can tell if certain cultures struggle like me Against the full blood white And Ireland isn't much different As Scotland and the Netherlands Same struggle same old wars For independence against so many nations So you were considered white But you were also considered as the weak barbarians. Which means outsider You see Europeans thrive on the conquest of other tribes if the bigger neighbor Thinks that you weak or easy to be controlled They will march their armies However they were wrong they thought they the smaller nations were weak.. So the Irish are white But they are outsiders different cultures All Europeans are basically white So from a European perspective I consider the Irish white

So Irish (in Irish) is called gaeilge. So basically it’s in the same language family as scots-Gaelic and manx (from the Isle of Man). Often times it’s called “Gaelic” but that’s not entirely accurate. There are few communities that speak Irish as a primary language and most Irish people learn it in school (like Conor)

For Irish people today it is up to us to Educate ourselves when it comes to learning our native tongue. Here in the north of Ireland there are 29 Irish medium schools and also a large number of Irish medium schools which are attached to English medium schools. I know from personal experience they do real well. It's crazy how quickly children become fluent in Irish and also because they gain great listening skills they then go on to pick up a third language. For me personally it's not political but a part of our culture I really wanted to get back. I am also learning to play the Bodhran (drum ) and hope to pick up the Uileann pipes in the future too.

@@TheLouisianan I was born in Kazakhstan which was a Federal Republic within the Soviet Union. Now it is an independent state, with Kazakh as it's national language. Most ethnic Kazakhs in urban areas cannot speak Kazakh properly and Russian is definitely the most used language outside of official government functions. We are talking about one language which is supposed to be the native language of the majority ethnic group, with full Kazakh language school curricula. Dagestan on the other hand is an autonomous republic within Russia. Avar is a minority language not just in Russia but within Dagestan as well. It is one of many languages native to Dagestan, where Russian is the lingua franca. In most schools education in local languages spoken by some thousand people is limited or not even available. That's even true for languages like Tatar with millions of speakers. Minority ethnic groups form approximately 20% of Russian population but 97% of pupils attend Russian language only schools.

If you listen to him speak, he NEVER dominates the conversation in a way that makes him the total center of the conversation. The grace with which he deals with people interrupting him or misunderstanding him is actually amazing. This guy is an ubermensch. EVERYONE can learn from his person. What about in Syria? Don't be so silly with your comments. If I use your logic, there are 75,000,000 Irish people living around the globe. We have one of the largest diaspora on the planet. for people hating on conor for not knowing gaelic, having been to ireland multiple times, i can tell you gaelic isn't their main language. It's actually english. although almost all schools are required to teach you the basics of gaelic, majority of the irish are not fluent in gaelic. there are only a couple select counties in ireland that only speak gaelic, one being inisheer, which i've been to

@@adammacdomhnail2014 Trust me they do. But old Gaeltacht crusties are such minorities that the people who only know it as 'Gaeilge or Irish' from school have them well drowned out by this stage. But if you go to Donegal it's not just old people, everybody refers to it as Gaelic up there. It's the name of the language in their dialect, and it used to be the most widespread name of the language before its decline (Gaeilig/Gaeilic)

@keanureeves593

Alright lads since this popped up in my recommended 4 years later and since I'm Irish myself I'm going to put this to bed. Gaelic as a noun refers to a GROUP of languages. More specifically Gaelic languages can be broken down to another sub group called Celtic languages. These Celtic Languages come from Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of man, now the names of these languages in English translation are Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Manx, however Scottish Gaelic can be referred to as just 'Gaeilic'. Irish is never referred to as 'Gaelic' or "oh your speaking Gaelic". This is not true whatsoever. Irish is either called "Irish" in English translation or "Gaeilge" in Irish translation. Now accents between English and Irish, it depends on how well you speak fluent Irish. The more you speak fluent Irish and speak like a true native there is a massive difference on how your accent compares to speaking English even if you're Irish. It's like the Dublin accent compared to the accents in the rest of Ireland there is a difference and it does fool foreign people mostly Americans from my own experience, I ve met many Americans who think its the Dublin accent that all Irish people sound like and that if you have a different accent, é.g A Limerick, Cork,Galway accent( counties in Ireland) they don't think you're Irish and think your Scottish or English. So it's for this reason I highly doubt that Irish language sound like English to a non native English speaker, but that also depends on How well you speak a true native Irish accent which is very rare in Ireland to find someone like that. Now that the Irish language sounds like an elvish language. Please I ask the Internet can we only just be associated with leprechauns. I'm not ready to be called an elf😂
@muzzo23
@muzzo23 4 года назад
Really interesting insight mate,as a Scotsman i wondered how similar our "Gaelic" is to Irish "Gaelic" and then also compare the two to Welsh,Manx etc considering we are the "Celtic" nations?,Are they as similar as the Scandanavian nation languages?
@BigmanDogs
@BigmanDogs 4 года назад
Elves are definitely an upgrade from leprechauns.
@keanureeves593
@keanureeves593 4 года назад
@@muzzo23 I wouldn't be sure tbh, only thing I know about scandanavians and their language, I may be wrong this is only speculation. Old irish and old scottish was pre viking, the vikings from scandanavia came to Ireland and Scotland and settled and basically took over and integrated with Irish and Scottish people. And then after the vikings mixed their culture with ours, I believe old Irish changed, the dialect and structure of our language changed and it was called middle Irish then after mixing with scandanavian languages, don't know if it was the same for the Scottish language. But basically our language changed cuz of the vikings, so I say there's some similarities and roots between Celtic and norse(scandanavian) languages, and then the Irish language changed again when the Norman's invaded, but can't say the same for Scotland
