I had seen many African people coming to india for medical treatment, Studies, jobs etc. They are very friendly they always like to travel in public transport with us. The Indian Ugandan story carefully sidelines the story of Late Rajat Neogy, his infamous sedition trials and his magazine Transition. His contribution to Ugandan media cannot be forgotten, even though Indians themselves try to forget it.

In 1973 I worked in London with a young Indian Woman who tearfully recounted some of her recent traumatic memories of leaving Uganda. She mentioned that Ugandan soldiers lined both sides of the road and as Indians walked between them on their way to the Airport a lot of looting of valuables took place. To object was putting your life in danger.

i think this is a huge topic that should be passed down to Ugandans of this new generation.

E.A. Indians were mainly from NW India, stretching from Goa to Punjab. Other Asians were scarce. Goans had a presence in all sports except volleyball, soccer with Africans, hockey with Sikhs, cricket with Gujarati. I did not realize what a luxury it was until I befriended European immigrants in Canada who had to join the workforce at a very young age to help their family.

The Indians in Guyana also suffered a vicious African racial backlash during the period 1964 to 1992, although Indians were a significant majority in the country. Indians migrated heavily to Canada and the US and now there are more Guyanese living outside Guyana than inside. I have met Ugandan and Kenyan Indians who experienced very bad things done by the native Africans. The Indians in Guyana are significantly different from the Indians who went to Uganda. The former were poor just like the Africans; they did not look at Africans as inferior or exploited the country, they built the country by use of their own hands and they never looked at India as their mother country - although they came as Hindus and Muslims.

I have always felt unwelcome to the Indian society but am realizing that it was just me....and if at any point that that statement is true, then it's up to me to still love and care for them just as any fellow Ugandan.....on behalf of other Ugandans, I am sorry for all that you went through in the past and in some current situations you might be facing. I still have fears about your interests in Uganda because I don't know what they are but am willing to take a step to acknowledging and appreciating you even when it's not needed by you....am so glade I got to watch this more over on independence day (60th) God bless you.

I am very happy living in London UK. What Idi Amin did was wrong. Ugandan Africans did suffer after the expulsion of Indian people. But I am still Ugandan by birth and my love for Uganda is never lost.

I had NO IDEA Indians were in Uganda. I know many are in South Africa. I like the fact that pretty much everywhere in the world Indians live (outside of India), they behave and aren't into gangs or any violent crimes. I heard they got kicked out in 1972 because they would not date, marry or make babies with Ugandans.

When the real colonists farted and left, the locals were left fighting on who farted. In truth both the Africans and Indians had been exploited by the British colonists. May God bless both sides.

The probability of another Idi Amin taking over Uganda is very low; but it cannot be ruled out as long as there is high unemployment in the youth in Uganda. Wish the Indians well and that they go on doing their best while not forgetting their social responsibilities towards the poor Ugandans.

Please let's build our Uganda our selves. The British favored Indians and gave them all economic access on the expense of ordinary Ugandan. Why would you invite indians or foreigners to build factory, why can't you built it your self?????

In early August 1972, the President of Uganda, Idi Amin, ordered the expulsion of his country's Asian minority, giving them 90 days to leave the country.

What amin done was already done by India because African were treated very very badly by Indian this is very true I was born in ugandan and I have see with my own eyes African was doing house work for Indian and paid badly and in some case they were bitten as well. When Idi Amin expelled Indians around 1972, what happened? Ugandans who took over Indian owned shops sold the merchandise, and when there was nothing left to sell they closed the shop. Larger operations like sugar factories shut down because Ugandans lacked management ability. Indians provided value to Uganda - entrepreneurship, management ability, hard work, dedication to growing the business. All of which most Ugandans didn't possess. Indians did contribute to Uganda's development of several industries - sugar, cotton, textile, retail; and more recently electrical, transportaiton, telecom, banking and so on. These businesses generated jobs for Ugandans, and tax revenue for the govt.

The Asians who were most affected by the expulsion from Uganda were the wealthy industrialists, real estate owners, and merchants. For professionals, employees at all levels, and shop owners, etc, who were the majority, the expulsion was in a way a God-sent opportunity for them to become British and Canadian citizens which had been their dream well before Uganda's independence in 1962. Some of these actually became very rich in their newly adopted countries due to their work ethics and business acumen.

People will always move from one place to another. But culture is a very important thing. The way one does things matters. Many people here are not saying the real truth. I grew up in Nigeria and we watched and followed the events on the other side of the continent as they unfolded. Fact remains that all the money that the Indians made was going into bank accounts in Europe, primarily UK. The Indians ( particularly Gujaratis) treated the local Ugandans very shabbily, and , essentially , as lesser beings. Adding to this, the 1970s was the era of a new awakening in Africa, where the newly independent African nations were rising to make their voice heard. Sad truth is, Gujarati xenophobia and racism led to the expulsion of all Indians. Non Gujju Indians, for no fault of theirs, got caught in this and had to suffer. So all this talk about Indians "contributing" to Ugandan economy is nonsense. They didn't go to Uganda to contribute to Ugandan economy. THEY WENT THERE TO MAKE MONEY

Indians are successful wherever they go due to their hardwork and entrepreneurship..The natives are usually jealous of the Indian's success..Same happened to uganda..After expelling all indians from uganda,the ugandans realised that they couldn't run the businesses left by the Indians...The indians could make a big dent in the economy..the realisation came much later...

Those Indians shown in this clip are wealthy, with connections and would be holding dual or more citizenships. So if there is sign of any trouble, they can easily make an exit. It would be very different for an ordinary Indiann going to Uganda. The riots of 2007 show this.

I read sumitra story which a novel wrote by rukhshana Smith. really it has a lot of sad similarities with this documentary. Sumitra at age 9 years old and her family who hailed from gujarat are escaping to uk after when late idi Amini took this decision. The young daughter I mean sumitra asks her mom aren't we came from India why we will not go back to india .her mom answered to her that indian government does not think or even take care it's citizens whether they die because of poverty and hungry or die for lack of health care. We will travel to uk because of good education and bright future. So when I read the book really sometimes felt sympathy for the Indians and some other times for my sibling Ugandan people. The author her self listened this story from an indian family she was resided with apartment one time and she changed most of names. Finally sumitra - the main character of the novel will face a cultural shock . Become suspicious about her Indian guturati traditional values and strict Hinduism. In later she will become more westernized woman and get rid of what ever relevant to Indian culture. Firstly she come as indian guturati to secular woman of British citizen which her family descended from gujarat, india

It’s great that the Indian community has contributed massively to Uganda but I am wondering why the Indians need to boast about it. Remember, the Soviet Union contributed massively towards the Indian economy in the years 1950 through 1970s, however did they boast about it?

Keep it up. Solidarity with financial economic and business development programmes of Indian communities in Afrika is commendable. Afrika is home. Please seek opportunities in Nigeria, the largest market in Afrika. The textile industry is waiting to be explored in Northern Nigeria or investment in real estate and furniture manufacturing, just to name a few.

A good and positive celebration of the Asians in Uganda. Yes, they did well and some also had faults like questionable people in any society, they were law abiding and willing to work hard. The majority were not huge investors in financial terms; the small 'dukkawallah' invested his time and effort based trust and conviction during his entire life.

Why do you guys hate expatriates from India? Even if you're Ugan-Indian, once upon a time you were an expatriate so you must empathies and facilitate in stead of being oversmart.

Indians where brought in by the British during colonisation ,so the Indians where given better opportunities than blacks that is why they flourished. The high hierarchy was white ,Indians then blacks people who where deprived of everything and yet they where the owners of the country . You can't do that ,you can't treat black people the honors of the country as a third class citizen .So when Uganda gained it's independence it wanted to take the economy in its hands and let black people be part of it .

Let me tell all the negative reply folks.... Indians have a sharp business acumen which most Uganda folks lacked. That is the reason this country failed once Indians left. For those uganda folks who despise Indian presence....it’s your destiny to remain poverty stricken and backward. Good luck on that.

Ugandans have always been a welcoming people but the Indians had so much racism and that’s why they were evicted, had they just lived well with the locals we could be both be far by now, that’s why till this date we honor H.E Amin Dada for evicted the Asians, this helped to create a new order that we have now.

Coming from what I call a mix up of Caribbean heritage I am not in any position or have the luxury to be a racist. They are very hard working and pleasant people but if they are going to fight for a land of their own then it must be frightening to become a foreigner in your own land. It's great for others to revamp the country but why do you refuse to help your own people. They can't all be useless or bad. It is the indigenous people's wealth so why can't they be given a hand up. Many foreigners are coming without skills with little to offer yet can start without paying taxes and whatever. If our people are not paid a proper salary, schooling or no form of loan scheme then they cannot develop. African leaders must spend the national wealth to help its citizens. The Young's are left to live in slums that looks like no other. Jobs without a livable wage or just enough to pay bus fare are useless. Africa needs to close its door to any more immigrants and uplift its own. Of course keeping ones culture is important but to be separate and apart from the indigenous people while benefiting from their land and labour is unacceptable in my opinion. If workers the skills for a job is available then the government should refuse entry for any outsider to be brought in to fill such a position.
