The trailers made it look like a lame Romeo and Juliet story, so I didn't see it and by the time I heard it was actually good, it was too late The trailers didn't tell people enough of why they should see it, and Disney's reputation was falling so many people just didn't want to give it a chance

Meanwhile Elemental has a lower 74% critic score but it still has a very strong 93% audience score as well. As for the awards, aren’t there still more chances for Elemental to win more? For the box office, I will acknowledge that Encanto had the disadvantage of being released as we were just coming out of COVID, so maybe that’s why its box office was lukewarm and the film especially the music didn’t get super popular until it deputed on Disney+.

The fact that neither Miranda nor Musker & Clements are returning, and that this was originally going to be a TV series, makes me worried that this is going to be like the DisneyToon direct-to-video sequels all over again.

The premise of this sequel is likely to be Maui returning home from context in the first movie. The adventures of finding a lost island then the creatures and important beings that exist there are a season of their own. That sounds better suited for television, much like Lilo and Stitch episodes involved finding a home for each individual experiment.

The reason for the live actions is because there’s a section of the population who don’t respect animation and will only care if it’s in live action. Sad, but a reality. Disney will tire of the live actions eventually.

They are doing Live Action movie under the direction of Rock because Black Adam fiddled and faile and Rock Johnson wants to be visible and wants to cope himself. This is why the Live Action announcement was made by Rock himself and not by Disney.

Same... I love Frozen and the sequel was... Like a car with tires without air. Sometimes i act like it doesn't exist. Disney just can make sequels... All of them out of Toy Story (what really felt like a real planned story) are from atrocious to mediocre, Even with good ideas like Frozen 2. But honestly they make more harm than good. Seriously... Frozen lore and continuity post-sequel is a NIGHTMARE.

They've pretty much exclusively made original movies in animation and haven't had the same success as the studios that have done mostly sequels. As much as people want to pretend online, sequels are what sells at the box office, not orignal movies. It's sad, but's it's just true. Out of the Top 6 highest-grossing animated movies since 2020, only 1 movie is based on an original idea: Elemental, a Pixar movie.

Onward, Elemental, and Wish were the only original movies to get full theatrical-only releases. All the others were either released on streaming and thus have no box office for us to assess, or they got limited theatrical runs after being released on streaming which skews the numbers. There may have been people who would've paid to see Turning Red (or any of the others) in theatres when it first came out, but wouldn't pay to see it a second (or whatever number) time. Onward was also released immediately after lockdowns started lifting, and the reports show that audience viewership in all theatres was massively down during that time. Had Onwards been released months or even a year post-lockdown, it may have performed better. And Wish, frankly, had almost no marketing for it. I'll never forget the surprise I felt when the first thing I ever saw about Wish was a thumbnail for a review of it here on RU-vid. Elemental, by comparison, had trailers everywhere. For Disney's 100-year anniversary film, they did nothing to prop up Wish. And this isn't even discussing the overall decline in story quality that doesn't even have anything to do with whether a project is an original, a sequel, spin-off, or continuation of a franchise. This is what I meant by Iger correctly identifying the quantity over quality issue. Disney has tons of projects in work all at once and they aren't taking the time to really focus on the quality of the writing. Part of what people complain about with Wish especially is how generic the story is, and how muddled it gets when you actually think about it at all. Not to mention the song lyrics that genuinely seem as if they were written by AI.

Talking about a supposed "quantiy over quality" approach at Disney Animation is just utter nonsense. They haven't even made more films per year than they did before. And the truth to the success of original movies ultimately is that no other studio has made a succesful animated original in the last 4 years. So we can sit here & talk about streaming releases & supposed "quality decline" all day, it still doesn't change the fact that audiences, at the moment, primarily go to see IP based movies in movie theaters.

Disney includes their animation studio, MCU, Star Wars, etc. And Disney as a whole is pumping out content almost nonstop. So, no Disney hasn't made less than half of number of works Dreamworks has produced. In 2022 alone, Dreamworks Pictures (both their animation and live action studios) produced a total of 4 films, 2 of which were live action and 2 of which were animated. Disney in 2022, under their "Walt Disney Pictures" banner by itself put out a total of 14 films (not including TV series or documentaries), 8 of which were animated (including hybrid animated and live action such as Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers and Pinocchio) and 6 of which were live action. They also released 3 MCU films, and 2 documentaries. So if you want to look only at animated films, Disney released 8 (or 6 if you want to argue against the hybrid ones), compared to Dreamworks' 2 movies. If you look at *all* movies made by these companies, then Disney as a collective (which is what I was talking about in my original comment), released 19 movies compared to Dreamworks Pictures' 4 movies. This is also specifically film tallies, which doesn't account for TV series. The fact that Disney 'haven't even made more films per year than they did before" is also nonsense given that we also have to include the MCU films and Star Wars films and direct-to-streaming films (both animated and live action). As I pointed out above, Disney is producing at a massive rate. As to your "no other studio made a successful animated original in the past 4 years" claim, this is also not true. The Boy and the Heron was both critically and financially successful. It was also animated and an original film. I think the bigger issue is that most studios are leaning into known IPs instead of generating new content. The fact that lots of studios are doing it does not negate the fact that Disney is doing it. Nor does it change the fact that Disney is doing it the worst, possibly just because of the sheer amount of content they put out. The whole industry is becoming increasingly derivative, yes, but it's especially obvious with Disney given how beloved so many of these franchises were, only to be followed up by remakes, reboots, or sequels of much lower quality story-wise. Finally, you said that audiences aren't going to original movies anymore. This is also patently false. Oppenheimer was a massive success that wasn't based off an existing IP. But if you want to claim anything historical doesn't count, there are still countless examples that disprove your idea. Just to name a few successful films of recent years that were original: The Boy and the Heron (2023), Knives Out (2019), Megan (2022), Parasite (2019), Elemental (2023), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), Nope (2022), and Free Guy (2021). Those are all original IPs and they demonstrate that people absolutely still want new things and not an endless parade of derivative slop.

initially the project was a Disney + series set for a 2022 release, then 2023, then 2024 b4 being revised as they've officially announced, the main reason it probably kept being pushed back was probably story telling aspects and then having to reformat it in2 a theatrical film.
