Ugliest Design Mistakes Ever Made

9:00 - Actually Voronoi looks quite fine. This mesh wall design looks organic and reminds of corals rather then spider nets. Its unusual, yes, but NOT ugly.

5:25 to be fair the library resembled a powerful fortress that deterred hostile factions with its exterior which made tank commanders suspect that the building actually had missile turrets concealed behind the windows

12:04 the bridge's design looks almost a bit like termite nest because of the termite tunnel details.

I actually liked the yin yang bathtub. My husband loves scalding hot water and I would love to spend time in the tub relaxing with him without it being cramped. This is perfect.

I always love that "Walkie Talkie" building in the UK, from the perspective of "HOW IN THE FRACK DO YOU DO THIS" design. I mean you build the building with a perfect concave structure and mirrored glass surfaces. Even when drawn on paper the whole thing looks to me like a giant death beam device waiting to be aimed. But did anyone think of that? noooooooo. There are other concave designs out there but the architects made sure to not have a perfect curve and add in items so you will not get a focal point. But this building was simply draw the concave part of a sphere on the paper then add windows .. success! For fracking sakes, everyone in engineering knows of the story (myth? legand?) of Archimedes and his supposed mirrored device used to focus the rays of the sun on a surface. Yet these geniuses .. nope what's that duhhhh.

19:53 The Bond Bug did do something useful. It served as the platform on which the land-speeder in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was built. Because it didn't have a monocoque body, they just had to remove the fibreglass upper shell and attach a new one to match the concept art. And a modified example holds the British speed record for an amphibious vehicle on water.

The 3D printed bridge could look nice if they scarred it up some and painted it to look like wood to make it look like it grew into place or something

That skyscraper in London doesn't look too bad. The only thing I find bad about it is the whole 'it acts as a giant magnifying glass' thing.

The Walkie Talkie is my favourite London building actually and I don't find anything ugly about it. It just looks sick.

I've been trying to explain the "uncanny valley" meaning to so many people since it doesn't make any sense. your definition was correct: "the more lifelike it looks, the more creepy the effect" I'm still not sure why making robots lifelike is "creepy" by today's standards, cause i think the goal of humanoid robots is to make them look identical to humans, isn't it?

That Walkie Talkie building only just beat the building I lived in for that award 😂

The solar flying wing isn’t really a design mistake it was intended to experiment with sustained solar powered flight. With the limitations especially at the time on solar panels the awkward design was simply the only viable way to do it.

I remember the Bond bug as iconic 70s design and way ahead of the time. It was made in Preston, England, UK. The car had a lot of problems because back then new design concepts were never adequately tested. But it looked cool, and today they are very sought after. If you google it you'll see average prices for anything in premium condition at around £10k.

@3:53 you have the benefit of hindsight and the revolution of hardware design that happened around 2000, take a look at hardware design for computers UP to 1993 and you would say wow that it a huge step forward and is some straight up sci fi slickness

Bond bugs were quite quick on acceleration. A friend had one.. a bit embarrassing if you stall them though, as you have to get out flip out the back and kick start them like a bike

if you are suggesting that the helicopter was ugly because it wasn't symmetrical, you are dead wrong. the only mistake with that design was that the pilot wasn't the one in the front. symmetry isn't everything people! LOL

I used to have a Bond Bug. It was totally impractical, awkward to get in and out, noisy and great fun to drive.

I’ve got into the sonic fandom over 10 years ago and when I saw that Paramount was gonna make a live action movie I was excited then I saw what they tried to pass off sonic to look like needless to say I was MUCH happier with the new design

Maybe it’s Kong’s personal insurance boost that if a client can navigate his website they can navigate the streets of London without crashing the car. Makes sense to me think about how vision works and how you mostly see a lot of grey information and fail to see minor details in a barrage of visual information like a sign among billboards

The flying pancake sounds like a name that would be given to my bearded dragon if he was a real dragon, he flattens out a lot to heat up

The computer mouse looks like a golfball that gave up on life, the mercedes benz looks like an egg and the 3d printed bridge doesnt look that bad

The snail-like motorbike (which doesn't look like a gastropod to me) and the Bond Bug, among other things shown in his video, actually look pretty cool. I'd even buy a Bentley/Ego laptop and replace the interior systems with those of a MacBook Pro for an expensive-looking, high performance iBook (the casing is decidedly reminiscent of an Apple iBook).

The face plam looks like an scp... because it's based on a scp that is alive and can talk. But it has no face. It also can walk. But it's not so creepy. The only creepy thing is that the entity can talk walk and see. It's safe. So don't freak out

"wonky-copter" reminds me of a tiny jet fighter design i saw in an old magazine. it had an air intake on one side of the cockpit, and a large gun on the other side. it was colloquially known as the "Mud Fighter". 8:18 reminds me of a comic book, where superhero Nightwing built himself a car that had several outer "shells" he could swap around, making it look like a flashy sports car, a police car, or a taxi.

In England, we have an airfield called Bruntinthorpe and we had a Super Guppy there for about 10 years, until we had to rip it apart in 2019. It's now on display in an air museum in Wales.

I got to see one of the “Frankenplanes” at the Boeing museum a few years ago. Apparently they use them for transporting plane segments around the world for construction of the smaller Boeing aircrafts. (It’s been a while since I’ve been to the aforementioned museum and warehouse/factory, so details have been lost.)
