Thanks for the video, almost pulling the trigger on this. Never thought about the baffles vertical vs horizontal 👍🏽 almost bought a feather and friends quilt with horizontal baffles hmmmmm
@sergiomovsessian49
@sergiomovsessian49 5 лет назад
I have the Feathered Friends Flicker 20 and it is awesome. I prefer to horizontal baffles so I can move the down to where I need it (on top of my body, not pressed under it or under the sleeping pad). The Flicker is super versatile also since it can be completely opened up or closed like a sleeping bag.

I’ve enjoyed your videos and it was a nice surprise to see this review of the UGQ Bandit. I just received my second. I’ve been using a UGQ Flight Jacket 0 degree quilt for the past two winters here in Michigan and in Canada. I just ordered a twenty degree Bandit for summer. I could also use it with the zero degree Flight Jacket should the bottom drop out temperature wise. I’ll use the Bandit this spring as I begin a section hike of the CDT down at Crazy Cook. I’ve learned a lot from your videos Joe, thanks.

So glad I watched your video. I embarrassed to say that I am from Michigan and I did not even know about UGQ, right here in my home state. I WAS torn between the Enlightened Equipment Enigma and their Revelation. Now that I see that USQ even offers more options on their top quilts than Enlightened Equipment and at a lower price point, I am totally sold with USQ.

How did the 55 width worked for you? Did you had any drafts? I am considering 55' too, since I am slim and sleep on the side like fetus

Wow! Wish I had known about these guys when I was researching quilts a couple of years ago. I have an EE Revelation, 20 degree, 850 fp down (if I remember correctly). Would have been nice to save some money or gone with the lighter 900 fp down for the same money. Does it come with straps to attach it to your sleeping pad like the EE? I've never needed to do that over many nights in sub freezing temps, but one of these days it may be cold enough for me to really want to keep any potential drafts out, so I guess that could be called a "feature".
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
It does come with a pad strap system. They have little loops along the sides of the quilt, and ship a shock cord with toggles that you can run between the loops and under your pad to keep the quilt secure.

Great initial review. Does it also have sleeping pad attachments like Enlightened Equipment? Would love to see how it works if it does. Thanks.
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
It does. They are basically loops on each side of the quilt with maybe three rows of these loops down the body of the quilt. Included with the quilt is a shock cord with attachments that help keep the pad snugly underneath the quilt.

Why does so much outdoor stuff have to be orange. I hate orange, and it certainly doesn't fit in. Probably other colors available, and I am thinking about a $185 one-- probably over $200 by now.

This is what i dont get. You loose the back of your mumy bag to save weight, yet you shoose a extra wide one to tuck underneeth. You loose the hood to save weight.... yet you choose an extra long one for cold nights. What the point? I tought it was to wear things you have anyway, like clothes and a hat.

Hey Joe, sorry if you've addressed this somewhere else. I big question mark with all quilts is are they rated accurately. I know people tend to say Katabatic has a very accurate rating system and that EE and ZPacks maybe haven't been totally accurate on their ratings. Any idea where the UGQ quilts land from your experience with this one ?
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
This is a good question, and one that requires a lot more testing of this quilt. I've only used it in around 20 degree temps. It felt great, but that doesn't speak to how it will perform at 10 degrees. I've been told I'm a warm sleeper, but I don't know how true that is. I'll definitely give a better idea of how accurate their temp rating is in my full review, but like I said, that'll come after some serious testing time.

Intriguing quilt; how do you feel about the non-DWR down in it on a thruhike? It's making me a little squeamish, I feel like DWR is good insurance against hypothermia, but maybe I just don't know enough about the non-DWR down. I work at an outdoor store and that's all we sell.

Hi Joe. I've been using UGQ quilts for about 4 years now and love every one I've gotten from them. I've never been cold in one and the ones I have, 950 wasn't available. They even made me a custom quilt based on the Texas flag and it's not only beautiful, it's definitely a 30° quilt. I've slept in it down to about 26° and not been uncomfortable. I think you'll love this one. Cheers! DonP

Whats the difference between a 20 degree quilt vs a 10 degree one in terms of how its made? Do they just stuff more down between the baffles? Would a 20 degree bag with 3 once overstuff be close to the same thing?
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
With quality brands, adding warmth to the quilt means adding more down and increasing the baffle height. While solely adding more down will increase the warmth of the quilt a bit, you really need to give that down more space to loft by increasing baffle height. Otherwise you are losing a little bit of your warmth potential because your down is compressing itself. So I'd say it's better to go with a 10 quilt rather than a 20 with 3oz overstuff. The overstuff will assure that the down stays where it needs to be and will also help the quilt keep it's warmth for more of it's lifespan (as the down degrades and compresses a bit).

The regular size EE Revelation 20 deg has 16.08 oz fill power of 850 down. Compared to 14.44 oz for the same rated UGQ bandit. This discrepancy is consistent across all sizes and ratings.

Joe, I heard you mention that you "free stuff" your quilt. Have you ever ran into any problems in doing so? Snags etc… I just purchased my UGQ Bandit and am heading out in a week for its maiden voyage. Looking forward to it. I like the concept of free stuffing it for the sake of saving space and filling in voids. Thanks in advance.

Very helpful review! Couple questions; Is that the tapered design? I keep second guessing myself, but it looks like the none tapered? Any thoughts on tapered vs straight cut? And if you got to use it more now, any video on your thoughts? I tried looking for it on your channel but found nothing labeled such... Would be nice to know how you find the temp rating to hold true, etc. Thx again for a nice, thorough review!

Great review. I have a similarly over-sized/overstuffed 10 degree Mid-Atlantic Mountainworks Marcy quilt for the same reasons you cite. One thing the Marcy has that is unique to the brand is shock cords running down the sides and across the top. If you tension the cords, the quilt snugs in around you so you don't have to tuck it in. The foot box is cinch-style, which I like for warmer weather, but comes with a down plug to seal out drafts. Kept me warm on the JMT in early September. Like the UGQ the build quality is superb.

Hey Joe. Mind if i pick you brain? I am conflicted with a few different things with ordering my quilt from UGQ. How tall are you? Im about 6'1 and wondering if the 78in quilt would be a good length. And does the 10 degrees ever get to hot? I can see that you talked about throwing your feet out of it, im just curious overall. Also why did you not opt for a draft collar? Sorry if this is a lot of info, you are a boss
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
I'm 5'10" and the 78" comes up a few inches over my head. I would think that 78" would be a great length for you. I've never been too hot in a 10 degree quilt. It is very easy to vent and I've never regretted having the extra few degrees of warmth when it gets really cold. Draft collars weren't an option when I ordered and I don't really see the point in them. I tuck the quilt under my neck to act as a draft collar. I suppose the draft collar would make sense if you are solely a back sleeper that doesn't tuck the quilt and instead uses the cinch on the top of the quilt to secure it around your neck. Thanks!

Thanks for a great review Joe. I heard about the UGQ from Luke at The Outdoor Gear Review. I am 225# 5'11" and a side sleeper what size bag would you recommend. Another consideration for me is that I am 75 and don't know how much longer I will be section hiking so I wanted the flexibility of being able to use the quilt around the house. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
I'd go with their widest quilt at 78" long. Having the removable footbox option may allow you to use the quilt more around the house, but I also enjoy using my footbox at home. It helps keep the quilt on top of me and actually works pretty well on a couch too.

It's hard to say. It might be a bit tight, or have a few gaps at the edges. It will certainly add warmth though! It'd be fine if you were using it in addition to another blanket.

Hey Joe, did you select the M10 fabric for the outside as well? I see they offer other fabric options, and was wondering if it would be a good idea to order the illume15 for the outside, since it offers DWR finish, and their down is not treated. Great video brutha...looks like an Enigma is no longer on my wishlist.
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
I did. In my experience, DWR on quilt material wears out very fast. Mostly due to the constant stuffing and unstuffing of the quilt. It may help with condensation a bit, but you could argue that it also traps some condensation too.

Another outstanding review Joe! Since you posted this I have spent many hours researching quilts and sleeping bags. Question: Do you know if the folks at UGQ are considering a hybrid with a zipper? EE makes the hybrid Convert with a zipper but the reviews on their own website indicate that the zipper cannot be zipped in the dark or has to be carefully guided with the reviewers suggesting to the mfg. to improve the zipper.
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
Hmm... I haven't heard anything from them about zippered quilts yet. I do know that they have been open to doing custom work in the past, so maybe you could email them to ask if they'd do it for you.

I'm not that experienced, and I'm trying to choose for a first serious sleeping bag (or rather skip it for a quilt who knows). For a three season bag/quilt isn't 10/20F too much when it gets hot outside? Or is it that even during summer it's rather cold at night just the same? My experience has been family camping with cheap gear. I've noticed in the forests away from the city at night, even in the summer it gets really chilly. I'm looking to make a purchase that could act as a good all around 3 season trekking option (so sleeping at friends, visiting relatives in other countries and or sleeping along the way in places from plains to mountains - I have a huge concern that in the summer it will be too hot in a 20F bag, or lower rating, so I'm looking at a 30F rating, what do you think).
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 лет назад
The great thing about quilts is that you can very easily vent them when you get too hot. I use a 10 degree quilt pretty much year round here in Colorado. There are still days in the summer where it can get very chilly in the mountains. This is not the case everywhere though. On the east coast it can get hot and muggy at night in the summers, in which case a "summer quilt" or a super light quilt might be a little more ideal. A sleeping bag is going to be harder to vent than a quilt. The rating you choose depends very much on where you plan to be using it.
@Jason-mw3jx
@Jason-mw3jx 6 лет назад
I'm thinking the same thing as you...and what I'm coming up with is probably using a fleece / polyester sleeping bag liner from Sea to Summit (~60$) as a super UL bag coupled with one of those 700 fp down throws from Costco (40$ for 2 on the website). Both are under a pound and I think would work on a warm trip.

One thing I appreciate about the EE website build process, is that as you tweak the inputs on how you want it made, it updates both the price and the weight so you can instantly see what effect your choices have on the quilt weight.

UGQ does almost the same thing. They've listed out the weights based on the size and fill amount at the bottom of the quilt page, but as you select the options, the price changes automatically. You just have to scroll down to see it.

yeah, but i'm not looking for "almost" the same thing, I'm looking for the same thing. I don't desire to only how how the price changes, but also to see exactly how the weight changes--just like it does on the EE site. Just like EE, there is a table that has most of the weights for the different options, but they don't have all the weight changes for all the options in their tables. (for instance, for different foot box styles). Also, taper vs non taper would not be a standard 0.5 oz, different fill power and overall temp ratings and lengths and widths would all change what the weight difference would be for taper vs non-taper. It just would be nice if they had the instant feedback on the listed weight and not having to consult the chart back and forth. Just a nice EE site feature.

Brent Welborn I would rather save $50-$70 on a quilt and do the work of scrolling down to see the weight tables than praise EE website. Especially when EE charges the same amount for their mass produced of the shelf quilts manufactured in China as they do with their custom made quilts. Then again, they might need that extra cash to pour into their website so you can get weights listed right away

That would only be true if the weight tables on UGQ's site provided that level of detail depending on all the possible variations of customization. But they don't. So, no amount of table reading is going to bridge that gap. But I'm sure UGQ's site provides enough info for people who don't care about knowing exact weights and just want a ball park figure.

It's still doing great! I used it comfortably at 12 degrees F not too long ago.

Thanks for the review. I think you’ve changed my mind from the revelation to this for my PCT 2018 thru hike. Better features and much lower price. EE does use treated down and UGQ doesn’t, might be the reason for the price difference.

How is that quilt work in the summer months? Is it to hot to keep over you?

The amazing thing about quilts is that you can easily vent them to stay comfortable. I have used my 10 degree F quilt throughout the summer very comfortably.

My thoughts on a quilt vs a quilt with zipper is that the zipper quilt can be used as a quilt when it's warmer and as a bag in early and late seasons when it's colder. I don't like the idea of being paranoid about if a flap is open when you turn in the middle of the night, especially in colder temps. Zipper will add something like 26-29g but that would be totally ok for the functionality. Thoughts?

This would be it for me but in Canadian dollars it is very expensive including shipping and border tax. It sounds good and now I know what to look for, Don't ever cut your hair, there are more now but we are fewer and fewer and I am 60.
