I built a uGrids kit! Based on the Mutable Instruments Grids exploratory trigger sequencer. It's only the hardware really as all the main stuff is already surface mounted on the board. This is not a guide to using the uGrids as I don't really have a clue, but I do some good fumbling about in the end.

i bought a couple of these kits to try some first time soldering projects. Tho i went with the ones where surface mounted devices were already stuck on, im just doing the knobs, sockets, and whatever else goes through the board. Pretty excited to try it out

With the LED's if you look at the PCB it's often easy to see that the negative leg goes to the widest track of copper (beneath the green coating) or just to a large area of copper - the ground plane. The other leg, positive will be a thinner track to a resistor in most cases. This definitely should have been indicated on the silk screen print though!

Also worth checking if there’s a jumper on the back to set all LEDs off/on, I know that’s an option on some boards. Ah, looks like he got it sorted at the end of the vid the LEDs are flashing.

might arguabely be in the top 3 best mutable modules list. i am very very happy to own the original. there is even another clone around with a midi expander. i am looking for one ofthose at the moment. Grids and SIG together = endless fun!! for those who own a plaits: update the firmware and you will have one of the greatest oscis...ever!!!

Really like Grids, I use noise into a dual Doepfer sample and hold triggered on a slow clock so every 8/16 bars it randomly reassigns the X And Y coordinates to give new beats. Also I think if you turn a channel knob fully counter-clockwise it shouldn’t send any triggers.

Think there is no manual because the Mutable Instruments one should be the same.

I have the after later audio version, they at least write on their site the power goes in either way. Thanks for the video! The stuff pots, I’m still trying to find a way to loosen things like that up, other than an over usage!

👋 there's a menu system within the module, changing triggers to gates may solve why sound module not working. Great video 👍

I learned recently of an interesting technique where you combine 2 trigger sequences (say, grids + euclidean) via a mixer/logic etc. I really liked the resulting patterns (and the variations by changing one of them at a time), so thought it might be something you'd like to try. Though it looks like you might be fighting for rack space space already? I think uGrids might have usurped eclidean circles...

Robin, your guidance re the LEDs was invaluable. However there was no dot on my push switch so of course I've managed to fit that the wrong way round and now need to desolder it :( Once done, and if I can find any markings I will post another note

The evolution of the mini trimmer pot...wobbly, plastic bare shafts, a bit shit...proper metal pot, solid, no wobbles with a smooth hard plastic mini knob for compactness...next step in the future, a rubberised, grippy, knurled, nice mini knob is made to replace the smooth hard plastic thats being used at the moment.

I don't really remember - i think mine was pre-flashed. But with these sorts of things you have to try different levels - maybe it's going in too loud or too soft - try try and try again. Sorry i cant be more help.

Are the knobs still stiff or were you able to loosen them up somehow? Been trying to decide between this build and one with mini pots. Thanks!

Yep, the knobs are bad. I use a molten Motion meter as proxy knobs into the CV inputs. I struggle with this module to be honest, it never works as expected and then, somehow it does. I don’t know. Something about that white button, I don’t know. Maybe if I can work it out it will be the solution I thought it might be.

@@MoltenMusicTech that’s helpful. I was looking to replace my steppy for something more interactive to compliment a westlicht performer. I hear the real fun is using the cv ins to shift the grid and density. Might still give it a go but will try the mini pots. Wobbly, but easier to wiggle. Thx Robin

It's a drawing by a friend of mine and local artist Chari Vince - I asked her to come up with some jelly fish with patch cable tendrils. You can buy a print or a t-shirt at my store.

It is really time to INSIST upon schematics with DIY kits! The often lacking build instructions and missing information on PCBs could all be avoided if a schematic was supplied? I suggest there are two issues underlying these issues: 1. The designers wish to retain their IP - rather pointless as with effort anything can be reverse engineered - if you expect joe public to build from components then a diagram is a necessity ; 2. Why the increase in part built kits? SMD? I suspect not - non-UK kits of "components escape import taxes and VAT whereas complete units don't!
