This is the Orange Open LRS long range UHF RC system.
This video (part 1) looks as the general design, layout and quality of construction and it should be noted that this is an older version of the product, included mainly for comparison purposes.
The Orange LRS transmitter is a simple but well made product. The PCB is well laid-out and the soldering is of acceptable quality. The RF module used is only 100mW and uses old-school crystals.
From a hardware perspective, this system gets a rating of good.
The receiver is compromised by the clunky module (with its old-school crystal). The receiver scores a poor rating from a hardware perspective.
Pro's:
- Nice plastic molding for the JR-type transmitter module
- Simple design and layout
Con's:
- very low-spec RF module in transmitter and receiver
- receiver design prone to damage due to module positioning
Check part 2 for the bench-tests which will determine how the system actually performs.

Yes, great stuff Bruce as always. Thanks for posting.. I'm new to the hobby and i'm finding the posts really helpful, very concise and I like the fact you call a spade a spade and don't mess about. I hope you do one of these for the immersion ezuhf jr module as i've just got one for my taranis. Keep up the great work. Thanks

Good tip on reversing the pins. Wouldn't be a hard retrofit. Having said that, my son did manage to rip an atmel chip off the back of an esc in his dragon wing once... Never underestimate the power of youth. :-)

Scary crackle every time you touched bare terminals in the PCB with the metal screw driver!!! ?

Hey Bruce, have you noticed that there is a small amount of static noise on your wireless mic when you tap your screwdriver on any metal parts of the circuit boards?

I have used the Orange Open LRS system from HobbyKIng on a couple of models. That large crystal on the receiver is a bad idea. I did swap a couple of modules to the type with the miniature crystal or resonator. You also need a 3.3V interface to connect for Arduino programming. I don't like that this version runs the Atmel CPU at 16MHz on 3.3 Volts. It's being over-clocked at 3.3V; probably not a good idea for a mission critical component. Other than that, once you get it working it seems OK. Getting it working well with OpenLRSng firmware can take quite a bit of messing about.

most 100mw rx work on 3.3V@16Mhz...

Even if I don't know what they are doing, I like all the expansion connectors on the boards. But the soldering looks like it was done by an apprentice on his first day.

Hi. I'v hade allt problems with Orange lrs rx. I'v tested rwo of them and bothe looses thair binding now and then. Bigger problem is tjat they stops working in middle air sometimes.

The foam would have been better off under the heat shrink with a cutaway for the crystal, anyhoo.. It looks like you've been busy Bruce, not to watch your next video! 👍🏼

I think that bigger crystal on rx is actuality battery choice than tinny one that can crack more easily.

9 months and no part two, why do you even say part one if you have no intention of doing part two?

I think you're doing a good job with this series but I wish you would have tried a decent OpenLRS board such as Hawkeye or Brotronics for example. The Orange hardware is crap really.

I think it has to be said that this OpenLRS system was originally designed by FlytronVideos . I discussed this with them and as far as I am aware HobbyKing shamelessly copied the design without giving Flytron recognition.

Bruce please give me a hand. During last 2 years, I've gone thru 2 OrangeRx 1W, 2 OrangeRX 100mw, 1 DTF UHF 1W deluxe, 2 DTF 100mw RXs, Numerous antennas(4 self made, 2 nagoya dual bands, 2 DTF dipoles) I can never go beyond 1km range without triggering failsafe. A while ago I thought I found the problem, turned out I haven't (My taranis+ is powered via 7,2V NiCd aparently DTF modules are designed to work with 3S battery, So I plugged a 3S lipo to taranis. Same result.) Also to anyone reading this comment, If you got an OrangeRX JR module it's extremely likely that the antenna piggyback is broken. Check it with multimeter before even turning it on. 3 out of 3 of my Orange modules had broken wire which resulted in burned out module.

Orange isn't made to fly 1k out, buy something better, Orange is cheap park fly stuff, I use it all the time with no issues, I just don't expect it to do more than it's price bracket?

Ben Portman hey there Ben. It's not just the orange. Dtf Uhf is made by the guy behind openlrsng. people reach 60kms with it. Even with a terrible antenna i should get more than 1km from a uhf system. Another strange thing is, whether i use telemetry or not. My range is roughly the same. Which indicates that my tx module is outputting no more power than my rx (which is 100mw) At this point I'm pretty sure that problem is with my taranis(since I've change every other component). I think it just can supply enough current. A friend of mine has a 9xr. I'm planning on burrowing it and testing with it.

flanker Try lower data rate and also enable channel hopping. DTF 1W should do 1km at complete ease. Maybe post a shot of your openlrsng settings?

I'll swap my 9xr for your Taranis ;-)
@illusivec

Leo FPV I tried lowering datarate as low as it'd go. Also tried with standard settings. As for channel hopping, tried anything from 6 channels to 24 channels. I'll post my current settings.
