Good show, ladies. I’m on a bit of a U of I nostalgia trip and I found your video. I am a 1976 grad, and although I have been on campus several times over the last 50 years I have not been in a dorm since graduation, so it is interesting to see how they evolved. I spent three years at FAR and back then FAR was known as “the Hilton of the dorms” because they were the newest. Weston has changed a bit since I remembered it. I think it is now part of what is called the “Six Pack.” Back then it was part of a group collectively known as MRH, for Men’s Residence Halls. I knew lots of guys that lived out there. Gender separation was a big thing back then and you can see that by the legacy arrangements of the washrooms. Outside of the hardware and fixtures nothing has really changed. Arrangements and décor are still about the same. Nice to see they updated the laundry facilities. The dryers we had were like industrial drying ovens. You had two temperature settings; “none” and “incinerate.” It was relatively easy to shrink your wardrobe down several sizes if you were not paying attention. Room arrangements appear to be about the same but I am amazed at how small the desks are now. I guess that would make sense as things like PC’s, laptops and such were still well into the future during my time. Notebooks, papers and typewriters were common and all those things took up a lot of space. Looks like you have a window mount air conditioner? Back in my day only FAR and I think ISR were air-conditioned. Major improvement as those first four to six weeks can get quite steamy on campus without A/C. You also mentioned that Weston Hall has a basement. Fun fact is that the campus radio station WPGU once had its studio in the basement of Weston Hall. Don’t know if it is still there or not. What I am also seeing is that there seems to be more options with room based food preparation and the over all quality of campus food has also improved. Looks like more options as to residence hall dining and what you could whip up on your own. Big step up from the choices in the 70’s which were essentially limited to the cafeteria/mess hall format. Flash your meal pass, grab a tray and take your chances. The stuff was edible and kept you alive but not much else could be said for it. I lost about 15 pounds my first two years. If you like the historical stuff like this you may be able to find copies of old yearbooks for the years you are interested. Try the office of the yearbook (The Illio) which was located somewhere on John Street back then. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

@@audreymill3rFUN! I was a DJ & newscaster on WPGU in the early 70s. My first dorm was Noble, in the same complex.

We did the medium one... idk if it's called a mid loft? We also had some friends who did lofts and did some cool things with the space underneath like couches, tvs, reading nooks, etc.!
