A visual history of the UK's commercial radio network told primarily through the logos and jingles of its stations.
This video looks at the expansion and consolidation of legal, regulated and publicly available commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom for the two-year period from 1992 to 1993.

9:42 Appears that they are mentioning Radio 1 at that point, by saying that the station (in this case, what was then Virgin 1215 (later Virgin Radio, turned Absolute Radio)) was the first new national pop and rock station in over 25 years, Radio 1 having launched about 26 years earlier in 1967.

Again, a lot of stuff happened in a 2-year period. How surprising! 0:27 Seeing the end of Orwell was a tragedy for the Ipswichers, but hey, at least they now had SGR! 1:26 Despite having "Pirate" in it's name, Pirate FM was not a pirate station. 2:28 Though WGMS is a backronym, it sounds like an American Station callsign. 2:48 It seems like Surrey had some big reorganising of radio! 4:34 That made me jump. (Because of how loud it is) 4:52 Reuse of TFM's jingle from the 1985-1989 video, impressive. 5:02 9:20 Clever how you used a supersized signal for the nationwide stations, because just taking a normal-sized signal and scattering it across rural areas would make a mess, Lol! 5:19 The network consolidation being that Signal Cheshire was merged back into Signal Radio. (I guess) 5:39 First West London, then Bradford, and now Leicester. 5:47 The music sounds like it came from a 90's sci-fi film. 6:25 The announcer did a funny mess-up there! 7:22 Delta Radio was relaunched in 1996, but closed again in 2010. This also officially means that County Sound's American-style shield was phased out. 8:15 Radio 210 slightly removed the reference to their MW metres on their FM service at that point. 8:57 Reuse of TFM's jingle again. 10:03 The longest radio station jingle I've heard so far. 11:23 Reuse of Isle of Wight Radio's jingle. 12:18 Reuse of Isle of Wight Radio's jingle again, with a little twist. 13:18 The first time that a radio timeline has ended with a station closure.

The nationwide commercial licenses wss the start of the slippery slope towards the eventual end of most locsl commercial radio stations in the UK. Sad we have the likes of Capital FM, Heart and Smooth, Bauer FM and Bauer AM putting out the same output almost 24/7 on ex local radio station frequencies apert from local news, travel, local adverts and a limited local breskfast and/or drivetime on Monday's to Fridays and perhaps sport 2pm to 6pm on Saturday's and Sunday's. How long before everything local that still remains disappears and the whole lot is broadcast from a single studio in London? A real shame. It's far too much about profit now, the big companies who have made them almost 24/7 have driven away most of the listeners who loved their once local ilr's.

Hard to be sure - although I AM working on it, they take quite a time to research, find audio sources, and put together. It seems that the more recent the event, the harder it is to find the audio! I am particularly struggling with the 1994 rebrand of rebrand of Trent FM in Derbyshire to Ram FM. Some of the local Classic Gold rebrands are a bit of a challenge too.

Due to how prominent it was in UK culture as the "original" UK commercial radio station, an honorable mention should be made on December 30, 1991 for Radio Luxembourg on 1440 AM ("208"). That was when English service of RTL closed and was replaced with German-language Oldies station "RTL Radio" which made it a simulcast of 93.3 & 97.0 FM serving the country of Luxembourg. That station changed to a Hot AC format in July 2015 and the FM stations are still on the air to this day. As for the 1440 AM transmitter, that shut down for the last time a few months later on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2015.
@tvradiotimelines
@tvradiotimelines 2 года назад
Radio Luxembourg had a massive effect on radio in the UK but I felt that it was nevertheless slightly outside the scope of this project which aims to show the history of the network of legal commercial radio stations broadcasting from within the UK rather than of "the evolution of commercial radio in the UK" as a whole; it is a very fine line, I know, but, otherwise, it would have probably been appropriate to also include the onshore and offshore pirate stations of the 60s, 70s, and 80s as well which would have been enormously complex. All of that having been said, your "honourable mention" for good old "208" is entirely deserved!
