You held up my favorite Rush record, #4 on my all time favorite album list. Thanks!!! And Sparks is interesting. I agree 100% about them pretty much having a perfect discography.
I'm a Canadian and although they're not prog, The Tragically Hip are much loved here, and they never made a stinker over 20 plus years. So consistently great. King Crimson is a fine call at #1, especially with said lineup and musical direction changes, that takes some serious talent to pull off! Glad I got to see them in 1981 in Toronto touring Discipline.
@@mikeknowles5848 Sean is getting a lot of respect from me. Nevermind who his dad is Sean has been ticking all the integrity boxes. I’m always interested in Sean’s latest projects. I hope he makes more albums with Les. They balance each other out nicely.
Great list Scot .I just thanks Scott purchased my first Van Der Graaf Album H to He thanks to you and so far i am loving it............. King Crimson rules.
Great show! Only other one I could think of off the top of my head would be Riverside--8 albums, all gems IMHO! One more album, and Pattern-Seeking Animals is headed for this list! Oh, wait, Transatlantic!!! Looking forward to Sunday's live feed. We LOVE ELO here at Prog Radio. (Even rhymes! =)
Great video Scot, you always teach me about some new music. I do wanna say Steely Dan deserves an honorable mention at the very least. Also, give Union another shot! I didn’t like it at all at first, but I came to love it
@@TheProgCornerI understand, Scot. I can find at least 20 minutes of greatness on each of my least favorite Yes albums, except Drama. After Does It Really Happen, Run Through The Light, and White Car, there isn't anything I care to listen to ever again. Especially live in concert. If I pay for a Yes ticket, I don't want any Buggles music wasting concert time. There's only 14 minutes of somewhat decent songs on Drama. Even Heaven And Earth has twenty minutes of good Yes music. And I say Union has a half hour of good Yes music including 3 great Yes songs.
Open Your Eyes and The Quest are kind of weak (especially OYE) but I like most of their other albums including Union. I never heard Heaven and Earth though so that might make the list of weak Yes albums. Jethro Tull had a few weak albums too though like Catfish Rising and Rock Island and apparently also Under Wraps (although I never heard it).
@@charleswagner2984 LOL !!!! Drama was Great, nothing since has come close to being as good!! Even Rick Wakeman said that "the biggest mistake he ever made was refusing to par-take in contributing to Drama", Saying "he was wrong in thinking it wouldn't work without John?". Everyone was on point on this Album, Chris was masterful, as always and Howe was exceptional.
Great list Scott! And I'm loving the Pavement attention. For me I'd say Voïvod never put out a bad album, it's all interesting to me. They also have a 7 album run of classics IMO (a select club that is!)
Steely Dan, Flower Kings, Transatlantic, UK, Boston, Starcastle, Alice in Chains, Alan Parsons Project, King Crimson (Pre 80s), Porcupine Tree. Granted some of these groups only have a few albums.
Do you enjoy The Fall? I love them. Kinda like experimental punk rock. They don’t sound like Wire at all but are usually in the same category. They remind me of Pere Ubu whom I also love
No way! I didn’t know you liked Sparks! Nice to meet another fan and hope to see a ranking episode someday. Also, King Gizzard don’t have any bad albums, theg don’t have any “good” albums, because they’re all great albums.
@@TheProgCorner This guy may have a point though I only listened to three King Gizzard albums. And one of my friends says that the bad King Gizzard albums aren't bad, but just generic punk.
Thanks for pointing me to Sparks and XTC, I like these bands but don't know their album work, so good to start. King Krimson was on my list as nr.1 too although I don't like Earthbound for the sound, and Beatles is indeed difficult to judge, but it's a great band. Maybe Dutch proggers Sky Architect (no bad ones there). Great vid..
The Beatles….Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix are the only artist I can think of that haven’t had a bad album. Sure there might 3 or 4 weak songs in their catalogue but nothing that adds up to a bad album release. For whatever reason people, even fans of Zeppelin, shit on “In Through the Outdoor” but it’s honestly a solid release. It has everything that makes Zeppelin great…. it so diversified. It has a ….rock song….a hard rock song….a blues song….a love song…..a prog song…..and even a country song!! It also has some exciting Jimmy solos and some great drumming by Bonham. It’s their mature album and I love it….along with the album art work! It’s their 8th masterpiece in a row. Great episode! Cheers ✌️
This question is completely off-topic, but have you heard the Czesław Niemen album Enigmatic? It’s one of my favorite lesser known prog albums. I’m relatively new to the channel, so I don’t know if you’ve discussed it before.
Great choices. Led Zeppelin and The Beatles were the first two that came to my mind. Blue Öyster Cult is one for me. Some albums may be 'weaker,' but there's no such thing as a boring Blue Öyster Cult album. I would even choose the band you're about to do, E.L.O. I have no problems with any of their albums, and I love albums like Time and the now double album Secret Messages.
I'd definitely have to include Ozric Tentacles as having not a bad album. With Jethro Tull, you're right, Catfish Rising has to be their dullest effort. A far cry from my GOAT, A Passion Play.
I’m a HUGE fan, saw them 14x and is my fav band ever…however Hold Your Fire has 3 good songs tops, presto is bad for Rush standards, RTB same, VT and TFE are avg at best. Gotta be honest with yourself with Rush. Phenomenal band but they have some stinkers.
Some prog metal bands that never put out a bad album would be: Mastodon Gojira Haken Tool And Ne Obliviscaris will probably qualify once they put out one more album. I’d love to say Opeth but for me their only bad album is their debut, Orchid.
Even the albums released after Hugh Cornwell leaving? They are decent but no band can lose a musician-frontman the caliber of Hugh Cornwell without some damage.
@@marcbergeron8690 Well ups and downs Norfolk Coast and Dark matters are recommended both different line up's they were going stale with Hugh 10 is tired! But hey it's just my opinion!
Instead of another dude just talking about top albums.. or some dim talk about what's "better".. this video is actually a cool idea and thoughtfully laid out.
Tears for Fears- All their albums are near perfect! Maybe the most consistently great artist in my lifetime. Dream Theater- Some albums are better than others but no bad albums. I love The Astonishing! SHUT UP! Big Big Train- Sure they got much better after their early albums but even the early albums are decent. Steely Dan- Can’t go wrong with The Dan! Pat Metheny Group- Ok so maybe a bad solo album but all of the Group albums are really good.
COHEED AND CAMBRIA! Ps this was a great video that I really liked! Even though I hate rush (I’m from Canada and rush gets shoved down my throat and it makes me like them even less 😩)keep up the good work Pps Deftones
I knew King Crimson would be Number 1, even before I watched the video! I just know you too well, Scot! Which I am in absolute agreement with you on btw. Great list. God Save The King!🤪
Scott, I quite like Giant for a Day. It contains well crafted songs, just not many weird time signatures. I really like the title track, Take Me and It's Only Goodbye.
I love XTC. Even their demos that didn't make it to their studio albums are better than most bands' entire discography. I read where someone said that most bands wish that their best song could be as good as XTC's worst song.
Good call about Rush! Dream Theater should easily be on this list. The Astonishing, yes they tried something different so get over it, it's amazing! Very melodic prog concept album with some of James Labrie's finest work! 💫 Btw, I also love Union by Yes.
Threshold are remarkably consistent. I wasn’t that taken with their Legends of the Shires double concept album, but it’s not bad. All the others are very good to excellent.
Sticking with prog, probably my 2 top bands that have the most consistent top level albums are Riverside and Porcupine Tree. I think King Crimson fits the bill with some of my favourite albums and no bad albums, but for me they have their stronger and weaker albums. From the albums I've heard from Camel I think they fit the bill too, but I haven't heard all their latest albums and I don't think they are as strong as their earlier albums. I think Gabriel's solo album collection is solid and so is Hackett's. Not your headline prog band but I like all of Stick Men's albums, and TuNer too, though they only have a couple so far. Hopefully more to come. If we are going to include fusion jazz in this discussion, I'd include Alain Caron, Al Di Meola, Brand X, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Simon Phillips Protocol,. This list could be expanded if we consider bands will less than 4 albums. For example Bill Bruford.
I would have cut out gbv from my list too but not beacause of sandbox. Its probably the most underrated album i have in my collection. I love it!!! Come on, long distance man and i certainly hope not. Wow, what amazing songs! Sure, the entire album took some listening to before i got into it but man, im happy i did. And id like to add system of a down. Five albums, all amazing!
Wobbler, VDGG, King Crimson, all brilliant albums. Here are some of the bands that I consider have perfect discography: Anekdoten, Krokofant, Elephant9, Il Bacio Della Medusa, French TV, Accordo Dei Contrari, Forgas Band Phenomena, Ghost Rhythms, October Equus, Gösta Berlings Saga. Cheers and all the best.
Hmm. Haven't ever heard anything of or from the Flower Kings. Otherwise - no objections. Yet, a lot missed out (mentioned below in tonnes), but this is a *personal* list, right!? Out to look for the Flower Kings stuff now, GL!
@@TheProgCorner so, eventually, I've made a trip into their body of works and.. Yea! I like them! If there was such a cliche genre as smooth prog, or comfy prog, I would have most certainly used that label on them. Just lovely!
@@TheProgCorner There were multiple great moments on O&L. But 1/2 of it fell flat to these ears. It was so different than all previous albums. But they improved that Beach Boys / Beatles sound greatly on Nonsuch.
Interesting list Scot. Living in the Past is an excellent choice and would also be on my list. Talking of which here's mine in no particular order. 1.Jethro Tull- Living In the Past 2.Young Person's Guide To King Crimson. (Yeah I know it's a compilation but I don't care -I love that album- my intro to KC) 3.The Who-Tommy 4.Genesis- Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 5.Elton John-Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 6.ELO- Out Of The Blue 7.Beatles-White Album 8.XTC-English Settlement 9.Genesis- Seconds Out (everthing sounds better than the studio versions in my opinion) 10.Jethro Tull-Bursting Out. (ditto!)
