In this video I put the apprenticeship route and the self funded route side by side, and talk through how they work, how much you can expect to earn, government funding and employer incentive, and then some of the pro's and cons to each route.
I hope this video will help educate anyone looking to join the industry, and those already on their journey to gain some advice for what they need.
I've heard of some people being put on the self funding route, but not hearing about the portfolio or AM2 until the end, if ever!

Wish my college had been this informed 4 years ago when I started the self funded route. Struggling to find employment in the industry despite passion, drive, high exam marks and excellent comments from course tutors. Feel like I've wasted 4 years finding this out as I've gone along. Highly recommend getting on an apprenticeship.

Wow Thats interesting, I am 38 an I want to become an electrician well thats a complete shits in my life from being an head chef. I spent most of my life in Michelin kitchens I just started the City/G level 2 and 3 I am not about the money now I just want to learn, I can sometimes work for free as an electrician mate, as I have an other job which I will quit eventually. There is no replacement for experience in any profession. You seem like a very genuine person thanks for the video.

Hi Adrian, thank you for the video. Oher than phoning round all the small or medium sized electrician companies in Worthing, do you have any suggestions or tips on how best to see if anyone is looking to take on an adult Apprentice? Thanks :)
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training 3 года назад
Make up an A4 poster and get on some key points that you think employers are looking for. Keep it short and concise and cut some tabs on one edge with you phone number on. Then put that up in every electrical wholesaler in your area 👌

Hey Adrian love your videos. I'm currently partway through my C&G level 2 in full time college. I'd love to be able to transfer onto an apprenticeship once this year is complete as it defo seems the best way in. This may seem like a silly question, but what do you mean exactly when you say you need to be employed first before you can enrol for an apprenticeship? How can you be employed first if an apprenticeship is the start of the employment? Do you mean being employed as an electrician's mate or anything else similar. This is the bit that confuses me sorry. 😭😭
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training Год назад
No problem, you need to find an employer that is willing to take you on as a paid apprentice working 4 days a week on the tools doing electrical work. Then everyone signs a contact and the college can draw funding for you, the employer might get a £500 incentive too if that scheme is still running. If you are over 19, your employer will have to pay 5% of your training costs with is £600, so it can make it difficult to find an employer
@berserk__88
@berserk__88 Год назад
@@Pure_electrical_training Thanks for clearing that up Adrian. Also do apprenticeships start anytime throughout the year or do you need to find one for the start of the academic year so it runs concurrently? I'm guessing it may vary depending on the employer? Thanks once again.
@Pure_electrical_training

@@berserk__88 Mostly academic year, you might be lucky to find someone that will take you on at any point, but I haven't come across one yet

Hertford Regional College charge £2000 for level 2 evenings course and £5500 for the level 3. Anyone know of less expensive courses in the hertfordshire county or London? I will contact other colleges near me but that's the only one which shows their fees on their website, so hopefully the others are a lot less. I'm worried also I might have missed the semesters, so will have to wait some time before I can start a course.
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training 3 года назад
That does sound a lot, but I guess a domestic installer course is around £2500 and that won’t teach you what you need to know to be an electrician, and I’ve heard of some people paying £7-9k via the short course route and still not being qualified. At least with the level 2 you can gain experience and then get transferred onto the apprenticeship and all your fees are paid, including the NVQ £1-2k and AM2 £900
@erelpc
@erelpc 3 года назад
@@Pure_electrical_training Luckily I've found a few cheaper options; not hard to find just had to give them a call to ask for their fees. I will try to get an electrician's mate job while doing it anyway, so thanks for the tip in the video about seeing if you can get transferred to the apprenticeship programme. Also, it seems a lot of the colleges are switching over to the C&G 8202-30 which I'm told is the new 2365-03...

Hi thanks for the video. One question, is it true that after an apprenticeship you could be tied in to a company? Seems like that's the catch, almost too good to be true!
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training Год назад
That is not true. You could have signed a contract, but I doubt it could be enforced. It would be worth checking with a legal expert

I am accountant by profession in my late 40s and thinking of career change. I wonder if there is any way to contact with you get some guidance on how to proceed. I currently only have fixed term contract which will be ending mid of next year if my contract is not extended. I absolutely love the electrical industry and fascinated by this skill which will pay for the bills and support the family. it is obvious that I will need to self fund it with evening classes.. the challenge I am facing is to get the practical experience after completing L2 and L3. how I would find an employer to sign me off for my logbook or portfolio., the AM2 thing will obviously come after it once I am done with completing my portfolio as required., my current employer does have a large element of engineering and there is even electrical training there. just recently started gathering information and watching videos
