Whether you're an EV owner, a prospective buyer, or simply want to keep informed regarding the latest charging news, this video contains all the information you need.
More importantly, this video can help you save money and avoid the common pitfalls when it comes to charging an electric vehicle. And no, you don't need a Tesla to benefit from the advice here.
This month I've travelled further than ever to get a better sense of what charging is like around the country. As always, if you have any suggestions for how I can improve these videos, or there are any specific sites you'd like me to visit, leave the details in the comments and I'll try to respond.
So stick around as Dave Takes It On.

Once the cost of public charging reaches 65p plus, then it is pretty much on a par with buying petrol. Very appropriate you mentioned subscribing to public charge networks, as many are unware that subscribing can yield cost reductions of up to 50%. My local charge network charges around 45p per kwh for subscribers, and you get an allowance of around 30 kwh each month as part of your subscription. Once you have used your allowance, then the 45p rate applies..... Of course home charging on an off-peak tariff is way cheaper than any public charging. Octopus Energy have recently reduced the pricing on their Intelligent EV tariff to 7.5p per kwh, down from 10p per kwh. And you have 6 hours per night at that.... That gets my per mile cost down to below 2p once more..... Thanks for the video Dave.....

yes, Brian, bit up and down, but it will settle down. I’m on 13.6p 10 hours weekdays 9pm to 7am plus all day Saturday and Sunday, average cost 22p over the month, Dave

In my calculations its around 55-59p to be equivalent to petrol, obviously it depends on lots of factors like mpg, kwh/mi, fuel prices etc.. I took an average mpg car and compared it to an average EV and it came to around 55p per kwh to where EVs are actually more expensive. This makes me not really want to use my EV for any long journeys since it makes quite a big difference and makes EVs far too expensive to use.

Hi, Dave, if you saw the April charging price video you will know this one includes more information. I agree with you and the next will include even more. Ultimately I will be including streetside and home Fast chargers, so I will get there. Re: best charger, from my road trip. Wow, a real can of worms that I am currently studying for a new video release later this week. Here goes. There is not enough difference in charging speeds between networks to select any one. Ioniq 5 can take a maximum of 220kW and either 400v or 800v, but with your limit of 220kW, even 400v is likely to provide all the power your BMS can handle. BTW a Tesla Model 3 LR with 250kW charging, pre-heated, plugged into a V3 250kW should charge faster than Ioniq 5 plugged into 350kW at 800v. It's a really complicated subject. Look out for the video release. Thanks for your support and comments, ~Dave

in defence of MFG they are one of the most active at rolling out new chargers and with 4+ chargers for new installs. They have good locations on major roads. At the moment most focussing on large urban areas (London, Birmingham, Manchester, etc). They have facilities, shops, takeaway options often on site. True they are petrol forecourts mostly (but they opened a just eV only one recently) and yes smelly, etc but I think they are well placed in the future to be a decent player in the charger landscape. (and compare there offering to their competitor EG (euro garages) who are so slow with their rollout they are not even covered. The main reason for MFG to be a success is they are actually building them other networks as a whole seem too slow at getting them out there. Gridserve are probably the fastest overall at rolling out but even they are too slow with their promises - 100 electric forecourts (electric forecourts are the ideal charging experience) by 2025 or something and they are doing 1 a year if that. Especially when planning seems to have been granted on about 8 of them already (some for a year or two ago). Whoever gets the most chargers out there (with half decent reliability) will be dominate in the market. Lets see what happens to MFG in a year...
@davetakesiton
@davetakesiton Год назад
Hi John, great round up, thanks all info is useful. Yes, all too slow, but I think the future pricing seems to be in the 60-69p range, Gridserve and Fastned, dropping to around 50p with membership, and tesla in the 40-45p range. Natural selection might sort out the market for us, Dave

Hi Hillbilly, know it all too well. I used the old three pin myself while waiting for my Smart meter to be installed. Got 7mph added range, so could add anything up to 100 miles each night and some days I had driven a lot further than that, so often needed to supercharge. Now I'm on off-peak and a Tesla home charger, I get 21mph which can go from totally flat to 100% every night, not that I ever do. Tough about the smart meter, there really are some cracking deals out there. Maybe get a new meter cupboard? Dave

Great video. Very helpful. I can't praise GeniePoint for reducing their prices from ridiculously expensive to still too expensive. The only way to ensure that these companies attract our business is to boycott those who don't. This is difficult when the infrastructure is still inadequate. With the vast experience that oil companies have from years of fuel sales at forecourts, you'd think they would know how to be competitive, both in terms of costs and facilities at their locations. It seems to me that until competition drives better services, we will continue to get ripped off by the big companies, but only if we let them do it.

Rapid chargers are generally expensive and used where a quick charge is required. Slower chargers are generally much cheaper or free and are meant where your car is parked for several hours, eg. Your work car park, outside cinema or restaurant or overnight while you sleep. Look for cheaper chargers you should find less than half that price

Considering getting an EV as on PCP its similar and cost effective in the long run. Seen other videos about having a raft of RFID cards but I've got an Octopus Electroverse card ready and waiting but that looks like it won't work with many charges, what RFID cards do you recommend to get?
@davetakesiton
@davetakesiton Год назад
Hi, Lukas, great decision, I wish you all the best. Dearer initial price is offset by the higher residual value and no servicing. I've just met an Uber driver who told me servicing his wife's leased Mercedes A class AMG costs £350 for an interim and £1,100 for a major service. I've long since stopped using RFID and most charging networks have also. I believe that charging should be as easy as pulling into a petrol station. I also believe chargers should clearly advertise the price as you arrive, just like petrol stations. I either use the app or contactless, both are accepted on all chargers, Dave
@peteglass3496
@peteglass3496 Год назад
I'll offer one vote for RFID cards. You certainly don't need a clutch of them anymore but one or two from one of the better aggregators could be handy and Electroverse is good especially if you have an Octopus electricity account because you might sometimes get a small discount. They are a fallback if nothing else works, bad contactless terminal, poor mobile signal in an underground carpark etc. Some operators shun the aggregators so there isn't one that covers all networks but they might save you from installing an app that you'll hardly ever use.

As a new EV user in the Manchester area I've been shocked at the prices of public charging. Noticeably the Be.EV network which took over managing charging points from Manchester council. With buzz words like "community" and their about us tab on the website claiming "We're on a mission to make EV charging simple, reliable, effortless and available to everyone", they generously charge £0.82/kWh. Ouch !! I noticed that phrase doesn't include the word "affordable" . Luckily I can charge at home for local journeys but surely these prices are putting off EV adoption on the whole. Many people will only see that public the charging cost is on a par with and sometimes more than petrol and diesel. (depending on the MPG of that particular vehicle of course)

800 volt would impose a compromise on the majority. The INSTAVOLTS with the heavy cable are BYD charging stations adapted to the UK standards. In China they use the gb/t DC charging standard and I recognise the cable head as an adapted to CCS2 version of it. The gb/t system is basically CHADEMO on steroids. Chinese people maybe smaller but they are tougher and more athletic well into old age. Those BYD chargers look like the public chargers in China with INSTA wrap on them. When I say public I mean government run. Posh EV brands in China have much more stylish and sexy looking charging stations that they run, which are open to all brands of EV to use. A recent survey revealed that among non NIO users of NIO charging stations BYD and TESLA owners topped their customers.

Nice thought Terry, but way off the mark. Modern cars can charge 20% to 70% in 10 to 15 minutes, even at public chargers. Also, hardly any cars charge on route, just like hardly any cars fill up with petrol at a motorway service station, the price is ridiculous for both of us. With a range of approaching 400 miles on a single charge, many cars can get to their destination without using public chargers at all. And if you cannot charge at home, why not go away from peak time and take advantage of cheaper off-peak rates now being offered by some charging networks. @@davetakesiton The thing is ICE drivers have got used to the habit of 'just in time' refuelling. Owning an EV is different and will require an habitual reset since the time required to charge is longer. The @JoosupUK concept is about bookable destination charging. So you charge and park simultaneously close to your destination, cutting out the hassle of stops during your journey. Most pay & display public car parks for example, cost anywhere between £2-3 per hour in some areas. If a public charger is there, add more on top. But then there's the issue of availability (is someone using it, has it been ICEd as they frequently are?) and functionality (is it out of order, has it been vandalised?). If an EV driver can book their electrified charging in advance knowing they're guaranteed a place to park and charge at destination, this eliminates those concerns. Just my two cents worth.
