How to catch and cook crayfish - its so simple.... I show you what sort of traps to buy, and tell you about what you need to do in order to get a (free) licence in order to catch crayfish. Then we go out on the kayak and show you how to bait and set the pots. We catch some crayfish from the river, take them home, and purge them in freshwater overnight. Then I show you how to prepare and cook them. Finally a really simple recipe - they taste great!

Years ago I had the licence to trap over in Hertfordshire, I now live in leysdown, Kent and would love to start again, poor man's lobster we used to call them, would easily catch 100 plus in couple of hours

Charlie, I suspect the crayfish are not so active when things cool down. But autumn still good, I would have been out this weekend, but the weather is too extreme!

They are not really active below 10 degrees and burrow,destroying the banks and beds hope this helps 👍

Hi mate, Chris from Boat Car Adventures here. Could you tell me where is this waterway and can we cruise it in the boat car?
@dizzyfish
@dizzyfish 2 года назад
Hi Chris - great to hear from you. Unfortunately that waterway is not easily accessible. However, have you considered Bristol Docks? There is a really good slip up by the Bristol marina just up from the ss Great Britain. I launched there years ago in the kayak, and spoke to the harbourmaster who was friendly.

You need to leave them overnight if you want to catch more than a couple a trap. They're nocturnal!
@harryhawk7700
@harryhawk7700 2 года назад
My only concern is the type of traps you use , you might end up trapping an Otter , I personally would use Swedish style traps which allegedly are Otter proof .
@dizzyfish
@dizzyfish 2 года назад
Thanks Harry - I did take advice before purchasing my traps regarding otters - when I applied for my EA licence to trap, there were strict regulations regarding the sizes of the trap entrances specifically to protect otters. It sounds like maybe you know of an even better design of trap which are otter proof

Maybe you should check the rules with regards to removing them alive to your home. It's illegal to remove live crayfish from the bank they have to be killed on site.

Mate, who cares, as long as its not the UK natives the Signals can be taken away dead or alive as they are destroying our eco system. Dizzy fish great video mate, do not worry about the keyboard warriors and purge the hell out of them bugs.

You need an Environment agency permit for any particular stretch of water (CR1) and permission from the landowner. Only non-native species can be taken and must not be returned to the water. The permit needs the NGR (grid ref) for the upstream and downstream limits of where you want to trap. Gloucestershire canals do not permit trapping as I found out well into the process.

Yes, for native uk crayfish… these are invasive American signal crayfish, and it is legal to take them if you have a licence, which I do. It’s all in the video

@@dave311281 but if they non native?
@dave311281
@dave311281 Год назад
@@kestutismarkevicius3264 Even if there non native mate, the American signal carries a crayfish plague that is deadly to native species. the problem is this plague can be transferred by boots/wet equipment and you might involuntary infect other lakes. Best to just get a licence to trap and kill them on the bank then take them home to eat. a lot of people will tell you " there invasive who cares" but that can actual makes things worse, which is why you need a licence in the first place so they can track the movements :P
