Welcome to Heavy Recovery with Steve!
I'm Steve - a Heavy Vehicle Recovery Driver from the South of England. I've been involved in recovery all my life, from a young age working in a family-owned car recovery business and acquiring the licences necessary to operate some of the largest vehicles on the road, to eventually working for some of the largest recovery firms in the UK.
I've set up this channel to provide insights into the world of recovery and whether you're here with the intent to step into the world of recovery or just interested in seeing the action - I hope you find thoroughly enjoy the videos!

You're a very good judge of where to stop your recovery truck in order to ease the tow part underneath the stricken vehicle. What I mean is that you seem to, more often than not park nice and close to the vehicle that needs to be towed. I guess that simply comes from many years of experience and doing the job as well as you can possibly do.👍👏🤝

This wrecker is much nicer than one i drive before covid here in Polan, mine was 3 axle volvo rollback+wheellift. And towing truck similar to this daf was a pain... bar pivot was realy limited. I was in love with that job but working 15-20 hours a day 5 days a week(36 hours shift at new year eve ), one time i was driving eurocargo wrecker for 18 hours went to home for an 1h and my suprevisor send me for a 4-5 hours long haul...

Hi Steve, nice clean job. In the US they would put safety breakaway chains on, is this not a requirement in the UK ?

Not gonna lie, as an American trucker the fact that your air brakes are controlled by a handle instead of a button astounds me. Here, the parking brake for the truck is set by a yellow button. It's either full on or full off. Push it in to release, pull it out to set. Its designed to automatically pop out if the air pressure falls below 15 psi. Normal pressure in the system is 100 to 125 psi, so plenty of room if you lose engine power or the compressor itself to pull over and stop instead of having to stop in the middle of the road. The parking brake for the trailer is controlled by a red button. Same principle, just a different button

The "shovel" bridge is well known around Uxbridge/ Cowley, was in a car that went airborne over it once.

Hi Andy, truck has a 80,000kg GTW, so I can lift and shift 57,500kg as truck weighs in at 22,500kg.

Why do you slowly release the hand brake on the truck being towed?

HI Terry, normally slow release handbrake on unit and trailer as you tend to find unit rise up quite quickly when trailer brakes come off, habit now for me on all trucks.
