It’s the top 1% who contribute 34% of income tax, and utilise almost none of it. This figure is up from 22% in 2000. If you want to see why this is a problem read tax cuts on economic growth by Ferede, which has been cited 184 times last i checked, or find anything on taxation and growth from Milton Friedman (Nobel prize winning economist). The countries economy is a shrinking pie that everyone is fighting over a bigger slice for. The mini-budget was an attempt to grow the pie by putting more money in the hands of investors and businesses. They did two things wrong: they didn’t present the ideas well (I mean they did, but just like covid you need daily briefings and to literally spell it out for people), and they didn’t accompany it with spending cuts (which they are now looking at).

@@stevec6427 You’re right, spending cuts need to accompany tax cuts. But the 45p rate only cost around £2bn (still wrong to not back it up with spending cuts though), and the energy support is costing somewhere in the region of £200bn. Should we cancel those too?

The whole point of reducing tax if you Google is to DRIVE the economy by increasing spending because you now have more money! How is it that the British ppl find this wrong beats me.

If the government cuts taxes but doesn’t cut spending, then the British government is taking on more debt. This makes it harder for the government to spend in the future to avoid issues like recessions and financial crisis. If the government cuts taxes but doesn’t cut spending, it will put upward pressure on inflation. This is fine if there is deflation or inflation below the target. Currently the UK has high inflation. Cutting taxes now would just force the reserve bank to raise interest rates to take money out of the economy. This means that the drive you are suggesting wouldn’t last.
