Considering from April- National Living Wage confirmed to rise to £11.44 from April 2024. Then HGV driving is still extremely low paid and undervalued. You have mega responsibility requiring load, drivers hours and general road safety. HGV drivers should be on a minimum of £20 an hour in my opinion (x class 1 driver)

20? minus all taxes and FULL rate of insurance? 25 is absolute minimum

There's hauliers based in ireland, operating Ireland - UK - Europe paying £135 per day before tax and £25 per night out in april 2024, no shortage of foreigners willing to do it, they're planning 15 hour days for that which takes the driver comfortably under minimum wage.

I’m working for a company that starts with a big A and I get 600 a week, it’s job and finish so some days 10 hours some days 15 and 5 days with 2 off, not the best wages but for a job that is easy enough rdc etc it’s ok. My friend works for a pharmaceutical company and he does 60 hours a week, with every second Sunday and he brings home after tax, 3800 a month, sometimes does the odd night out. There is jobs out there but the best ones are not advertised on indeed etc. As I write this I am sitting in drivers lounge eating my dinner chilling, so it’s not all bad

I agree with you, tanker drivers and car transporters in Essex ( fords) were on very good money. I did try to get on but those days they more or less "kept it in the family" as they say. Like Sainsbury they used to put their warehouse staff through hgv at one stage, almost impossible to get on but the money good

I've been told I can earn £40,000 a year as a truck driver, based on this I'm looking at doing my class 1 and dangerous goods. I earn roughly that a year now 4 on 4 off but what worries me is that people tend to over exaggerate wages. I would hate to leave my job only to find that the wages are not what people say.

Class 1 ADR tanker driver here, based in the northwest. We run class 8 corrosive tankers both national and international. Wages are paid weekly and earned on an hourly rate. First 40 hours are rate 1. Any after that at rate two. Weekends at a further enhanced rate. Bank holidays are at a fair rate plus day in lieu. Nights out all week, if you live local you might get home occasionally. Wages average £900 - £1075 take home per week. Good work, feel valued and looked after.

My lad, single guy, usually clears £900 a week, when he gets his quarterly bonus he clears £1060. This includes night out pay. He works as a tramper, 5 days a week, no weekends. Based in the North East mainly vehicle manufacturer based loads, in and out of the docks.

I average 51.25hrs per week starting 1am working Sunday to Thursday. Done by 11:15 most days and normally sat waiting for a few hours oer shift. Absolutely not everyones cup of tea but suits me. Based in South Midlands But because its unsociable hours because its unionised and therefor has premium rates for nights/weekends/overtime it adds up and I'll be grossing just shy of 60k this tax year. Previous job was general haulage flat rate, max hours around 42k. There are good jobs out there, not always advertised.

@@user-nl4li1pj8l sorry i didn't realise I needed to? Base pay is £17.84 and I get 17hrs at that. Then my hours between 1am and 6am I get paid 20 of them with a 25% uplift which is £22.30 Then my weekend day I get a 33% uplift for my contracted 9.25hrs so that's £23.73 That's my contracted 46.25hrs accounted for but I normally on average end up doing an hour a day/five hours a week overtime (traffic, waiting, delays etc) which is 50% uplift and comes out at £26.76 So 17 x £17.84 = £303.28 Plus 20 x £22.30 = £446 Plus 9.25 x £23.73 = £219.50 Plus 5 x £26.76 = £133.80 Equals £1102.58 gross per week. Multiplied by 52 weeks = £57,334.16 Additionally as I do Sunday-Thursday shift I am rostered to work every bank holiday Monday which are paid at the 50% uplift rate. I also get a pathetic meal allowance of £5 per week 🙄

I know it's a 2 month old video (just got it recommended) and I don't live or work in the UK, but I'd recommend looking at median salaries for your general area if you're looking for work. Median helps filter out the outliers that earn ridiculous salaries (on both ends of the spectrum). Not that big of a deal for HGV drivers as a whole, but if you're somewhere with a lot of highly specialized work like tankers, logging, hazardous waste, oversize and heavy equipment delivery etc, it helps to filter out those if you're not planning on going in that line of work as the salaries for specialized stuff is always going to be higher than your general container/curtainsider/reefer work.

Very few hgv driving jobs will pay you 60k probably tankers on old contracts or working your maximum hours on a well paid job, I'm getting a basic of 43k salary for 40 hours per week class 1 but we have class 2 salaried the same but longer hours in the North East some drivers at our depot who put the hours in are getting mid 50 k plus yearly bonus so close to 60 k, the problem with earning this much is you end up in a higher tax bracket so your not much better off than earning just below 50 k

Agreed. I know and have family who work on fuel tankers (old contracts) and other ADR such as bitumen or aviation fuel and they can tip over 60k or even 70k on old contracts for Asda and the like, but those deals aren’t easy to get into, if they even exist anymore. They were goaled on crazy productivity targets and that’s how the bonuses were paid.

Hire and reward general transport is struggling, lots of hours involved and they simply can't pay more or they'll go pop. Beware of adverts where they try and include night out money to make the figure look good. Contract transport, ie supermarkets will usually be good, hours might be odd and unsocial including weekend and bank hols but the terms and conditions will normally be well up there, a mate is on £21 an hour working out of a supermarket RDC delivering to shops. Own account or specialised or dirty work or jobs involving hard graft (sometimes all of those things ie car transporters) usually pay better. Money varies so much around the country.

You/they could always come down to Australia for better open road driving with up three 3 trailers (53 mts :eek: ) . My son is carting livestock (sheep/goats/cattle) 50-70 hours a week and he pays a lot of tax! . But it's hard to compare Au dollars to British pounds . Some mining jobs driving on public roads do pay BIG dollars . You can have your traffic all to yourself . How about 250ks without a speed change sign ? Or something like 147 ks/90 miles without a bend ---- but you have to watch out for emergency aircraft that use parts of that highway also .

Hi Ashley! I'm a minicab driver in London making about £20/h average as self-employed, before expenses and I'm looking at maybe transitioning into HGV.ing, specifically as a tramper as I might be saving on rent in London. Great video, by the way! Thanks for putting the effort into making it! Great comments from people in the industry as well! One thing I don't see anyone mentioning is taxes. I imagine for the yearly salary, you're an employee and pay taxes that way, but for the daily rate, given the difference in wage, is that paid to you as a self-employed person? I'm also interested in doing this job as a tramper. I know you say one is being paid a bit more, but could you try to give some realitic estimates for it? As it is a big difference between the 32.5k UK average and a 50-60k mentioned at the end. Thanks a lot again for your videos, really illuminating for someone looking to get in!

All the rates of pay are before tax N.I etc. There is a website that calculates your after deductions earning which I have use before that is quite accurate, but it does assume you tax code that can be different depending on your earning and if you have thing like student loans that are deducted automatically.

It depends on the area, the type of company and the type of work you are doing. While you gain experience you would be unlikely to be on the higher side of wages, however if you are proactive and try to specialise, you may attract higher wages after a while, but there is no set time I can say. There are some rigid jobs that attract good rates, but there would be lifting involved. An example would be Brakes, where £35,000 would be about right for 45 hours (probably more in London). How much you actually earn may depend on how many extra hours you do and at what enhanced rate that is paid at. Also, if you get paid more for weekends. Also, take into consideration what pension contributions are matched, because that can be a big benefit. If you have a plan, it can pay off. For example even moving to an area where you know there are a few good payers. If you get on agency these days it is quite often parity pay, so you are earning the same as the full-timers. It pays to be proactive and have a plan

Is it still worth getting my licence? Im currently on £24,500 with little prospect of increasing that, im going through the HGV bootcamp process at the moment because i want to earn more money but i keep seeing people saying that wages in the HGV industry are collapsing and honestly looking locally on Indeed recently Class 2 wages dont seem to be much better than what im on now? Is the extra hours work and lost spare time worth it? Ideally i want to go to Class 1 eventually, can you still earn decent money in class 1?
@AshleyHaleUK
@AshleyHaleUK 2 месяца назад
Money is all relative. An extra £10k per year can be a lot to some people, but you will probably be doing more hours than you're doing now to get it. It's more about how much you enjoy the job because you don't want to do a job you're not happy in, even if you are being paid more!

My dad (now retired) was class 1 driver and in the 90s was approached by a guy who offered him a 70k a year driving a petrol tanker, my dad asked where? He was told in Iraq!!! 😵‍💫 Dad said errm no thanks!! 😂😂 Im class 1 now myself got into it around 12 months ago, the biggest problem I found was getting someone to take a new driver on!! As soon as you tell them you're a new driver, they say nope!! So tbh having to have your CPC don't mean anything really! Most places i spoke to want 2 years experience. But after being turned down by countless haulage companies, only had 2 phone me back. One the salary was only £540 per week that was for 10 hours a day 5 days a week for general haulage, the other £600 same hours and days, so went with that one. Uk only, the odd night out here and there, but im loving it!! Wished I'd have done it many years ago. Unfortunately my dad used to put me off! He used to say that you get treated like shit and people look down at you! But I've been doing class 2, now 1 for around 14 months now, and haven't come across any of this yet.

Iv found it’s all relative to the hours you work more so on day rate, divide the day rate by the hours some work out as below minimum wage ! Some companies advertise can earn 47 grand a year ect, yeah that’s if you work weekends nights, and 15 hour days. It’s not bad in some situations o agree but the time and hours and responsibilities and rules we all have to abide buy in the end 50k a year and never seeing g you’re kids grow up is not enough for me still

@@AshleyHaleUK For the most part, if left alone to do the job, but with some in management wanting to make a name for themselves, and climb the management ladder by trying to reinvent the job, 40yrs experience would count for nothing, just happy to leave them to it in the end.
