Jay inviting them to go made it less funny. In the UK version Jay didn't openly invite them he was lying and saying how caravan club is like a sex club. He then did say "come if you don't believe me" but when they agreed to go he got visibly nervous as he didn't expect them to say yes. You could tell he just thought the conversation would end there but now he was actually worried that the others would find out he lied about it.
That's because the UK Jay is all talk and bluster, trying to be cool, knows he is talking BS and terrified of being found out The US Jay is a full on letch, wouldn't be surprised if he assaulted a girl, probably really does believe RV club is a sex club even though he hasn't had any action there
@@katonnor UK Jay has some scenes where he actually comes across as vulnerable, especially when he starts dating that girl who them dumps him. And there's a subtext, especially in the movies, that he was maybe even abused some what as a child. He's a pervert but, like, no more than most teen boys and you never think he will hurt anyone. From comments here it seems US Jay turns into a full on nonce and that doesn't remotely surprise me. Because the character has none of the emotional depth of the UK character
He is literally just sitting there The UK one is funny because of Gilbert's attitude to this obvious bullying, which sums up Gilbert The US one is supposed to be funny because Will has a bucket on his head. That's the joke apparently
It blows my mind how a full team of profesional people managed to film this scene, where a lad sits in school without tied up hands with a random bucket on his head that shouldn’t be in a common room and nobody stood back and said WTF are we doing.
@@not_anartist8477 That didn't even occur to me Like the UK one is "here's an item from the common room" The US one is apparently "I brought in a bucket to stick on your head. Now just sit there wearing it."
UK Inbetweeners was super relatable, it was how regular teenagers speak to each other but with extra ridiculous events. The American actors are too good looking and have shit banter. Americans *can* nail this stuff, Superbad was absolutely an Inbetweeners-style story in movie form and was brilliant.
I can't believe no one's mentioned how badly they butched the scene with that girl who goes after Will. The point of that scene is that she's extremely promiscuous and confident, with her red hair, piercings and punk design being a very important part. She literally just wants sex, and the entire joke of the scene is that rather than going along with it, Will being Will obliviously decides to be as childish as possible and suggest they skid together, which obviously turns her off. The contrast is what makes it funny, and it's butchered in the American version because the girl's design is so much less cool. She still has the confidence, but she looks completely normal, like Carli or any of the girls at their school, so the joke is lost and Will wanting to skid just comes across as weird and random rather than funny and cringe.
They even made US Jay a redhead, larger sized lad, just to re-enforce 'You're not meant to like this character', even harder. Just incase the audience didn't get it. Wow! The UK Jay had brilliant moments that gave him a place in the gang. With the US one you wonder why they even hang-out with each other?
Yeah, they really screwed up when it came to casting Jay. The entire cast was wrong, but Jay was the worst. The UK Jay is quite a good-looking lad, so his lies straddle the line between bullshit and believable, and that's because of Jay's looks. I can almost believe that he might have had threesomes with top models like Lucy Pinder. If Jay wasn't such a bullshitter, he'd probably have the most luck out of all the lads except for Neil. Whereas the lies that the US Jay tells are obviously bullshit because of how unattractive he is.
What I think the UK version did so well was that it was realistic, the US version doesn't seem realistic with the lines, characters, camera work just all of it. Like the way the UK version is, the way the characters speak, is how teenagers that age actually talk. They also just butchered any good jokes that the UK version did. Honestly I don't know what they were thinking remaking a clearly UK humour type show into an American shitty humour type show. Theres a massive difference between UK humour and US humour.
the best part is ... “neil did you piss in my new car?” “i wouldn’t call it new” the us version skips out all the nuances and just copies the jokes which make it sooo bland
i'm sure someone has pointed this out, but as an American who has seen and loves the original series/movies and tried to watch the American one, it mostly comes down to American censorship and lazy writing. the American writers wanted to use the iconic lines from the UK version, but with our censors being such prudes, they had to come up with swaps to get around them. rather than write new jokes with a similar setup, they just use the same joke and make up a word that can get around the censors, a prime example being "renob". having this on MTV is another big issue, had this been on FX or a premium channel like HBO, we might have been able to replicate at least a similar tone. i'm honestly surprised this made it past the pilot, MTV must have been starved for content and hoping for a hit, especially when looking at some of the other UK remakes like the IT Crowd that thankfully crashed and burned
I’ve heard people say Inbetweeners is like The Young Ones but without cutaways. I don’t think so, but Young Ones was MTV so maybe they were trying something like that. They completely failed.
I genuinely feel guilty for watching this video, knowing that my view is going to contribute to you watching the next two episodes which will probably put you in a psychiatric hospital
American and British humour is like matter and anti-matter, similar yet completely opposite, and if you try to combine them they annihilate each other and it destroys everything around it.
As a punishment for crime, instead of community service / jail time, it should instead be to watch all the episodes from the American Inbetweeners one after the other
The bucket on the head is the most basic and yet perfect example of how the script writers for the US version just didn’t understand the comedy in the source material
Obviously you can analyse it so much better then me, but i think a big part of what made the og inbetweeners so funny, was how accurately it captured the bleak shiteness of average (especially teenage) life in the uk , and the us version amongst doing so many other things to butcher it, doesnt even try to capture any of that
Very true. I remember Ricky Gervais saying the US Office had to be much brighter and optimistic to appeal to Americans and Michael Scott had to be likeable. They also don’t champion the underdog like we do which is why Jim is different to Tim. But yeah, taking away the bleakness didn’t work here.
I have watched this RU-vid series from the start today and I dreaded every next one from the start us one is so cringe man, didn’t think it would be as bad as it genuinely was might top myself
I need to tell you, your presence is needed. Consistently. Your personality and your critical perspectives on the shite that graces our screens on occasion, are as good as the Inbetweeners! In a sense. You're tuned in man, never let anyone tell you otherwise. Keep going fam, miss you.
Watched all 6 last week after stumbling across your vids in my recommended... glad 7 wasn’t far away, sorry bro but your misery is our enjoyment when it comes to watching this US version 😂 love it mate keep it up! 👏🏼
I don't like what they did to Neil's character. In the British version, Neil is a little bit slow, but he has lor's of personality to make up for it - he is kind and considerate at times, the American Neil just looks certifiable and off the latch.
shout out to that guy in the background at 2:06 who's just staring straight at the camera. whenever the camera changes he's still staring straight at it that shit kills me
how is he still making these videos his mind must be squashed after hes watched the american inbetweeners but thank you for going through the pain of watching these for us
It's on the same level as the first two series of the US Office. They are so bad at cringe humour that it in turn makes you cringe out of second-hand embarrassment.
@@alexhando8541 I know I still haven't watched the US office because the pilot is such a bad rip off of the original episode 1 I just gave up on the series. I heard it gets better though
The reason the UK version actually worked was because it was designed around UK secondary school life. The US is very different from the UK so it doesn’t work at all. Simply put there is barely any originality in the US version.
Exactly, it's even there in the name. They are the inbetweeners becuase they're in between the end of compulsory education (16) and starting university (18).
as a person who isnt from the UK neither from the US, I guess it all comes down to the fact that US humour tends to be obnoxiously on your face while British humour has more nuaces driven by sarcasm. When it comes to teenage comedy it's pretty fckn evident tbh. It just doest work
I listen to all these The office podcasts and scoff at the nonbelievers and the “enemies” of the network television companies…yeah I get the pushback now.
ok watched the 1st episode and my god i was cringing and wanting to turn it off by 10 mins, even before that it was brutal like oh my god dude i give you so much fucking credit for sticking to this dear god
up to episode 11 now and i actually like the original episodes, hard to believe when they arent trying to copy the uk version and do it themselves it actually works
As terrible as US Jay is, I actually find the US version of Neil to be even worse. The actor just doesn’t take the role seriously. It actually requires genuine talent to play a loveable idiot and the US Neil really over exaggerates the characters idiot nature while simultaneously seeming to put in no effort to appeal to the audience.
I honestly thought that the American jay had downs when I first saw and heard him. Also the thing about will dressing smart in the US version is lost because people just wear what they want in American schools anyways.
US will just sitting there with a bin on his head without his hand being tied behind his back... Like did the producers think UK will was voluntarily sat there wearing a bin
when will americans learn british humor can not be copied the thing that makes brit shows good is the swearing, the slang, just everything because we dont censor unselves
I’m surprised it took me scrolling this far to find this comment. I’m baffled by that as it’s not in Wills character at all, why would they change the person when ripping off the entire episode? Stupid!
