(23 Apr 2016) A student came out as "non-binary" on Saturday during a televised town hall-style meeting with US President Barack Obama in London.
Maria Munir, a student at the University of York in northern England, told Obama: "I'm coming out to you as a non-binary person" - identifying as neither exclusively male nor female.
The student urged the British and US governments to "take us seriously as transgender people".
The president said he was "incredibly proud" of Munir for speaking out, and encouraged the questioner to "keep pushing".
Munir said afterward that "to be sat in front of the president of the United States, the leader of the free world, and to be able to pitch to him social action that I believe he can have a real influence on is something I will never be able to describe".

You can tell that he isn’t entirely familiar with being non-binary or what it entirely means, but he listened and did his best to encourage them and understand which I really appreciate. It’s okay to not understand the gender spectrum but it’s important to know what it means to others and how to properly help

And I can't help but notice that my health insurance premiums have tripled since the "affordable healthcare act". And my out of pocket deductible has tripled as well. As a non binary person, I gotta say that it takes courage to even come out in the first place, much less to a room full of people. I love that they were met with beautiful applause and acceptance. That just shows that the world is truly heading in the right direction. How heartwarming to see. Everytime one of us is celebrated, we're all celebrated. Thank you President Obama for your amazing, open hearted leadership. That's the kind of president we need!! Not someone who's trying desperately to send us back into the dark ages where women, colored people, poor people, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ people are treated like less than citizens. Hopefully this next election will give us REAL leadership again.

@@cactusbuds2979 yeah i want top surgery, still even if you do get surgery you are biologically your birth sex. there's nothing wrong with that, your gender is what's important in your day to day life, that's just the science behind it. @Franco Cavalli it is not only sex that is valid on legal documents, it is gender identity, there are laws that exist that substantiate this. however non-binary identities are not currently legally recognised, when they should be

Non-binary is under the trans umbrella. Non-binary people do not have a matching gender identity and physical sex (unless they were born intersex like myself!) and so are considered transgender.
