The officers stick a short piece of plastic tube onto the whistle mouthpiece. They grit they tube in their mouth so the whistle hangs just slightly below the hemlet.
My understanding is that all Traffic Officers are trained in escorting duties, although having to escort in London in on another level. As the SEG officers are very well practised in the city they make it look 'easy'.
