It was oversensationalised - the heaviest snow IN CENTRAL LONDON for 18 years. But they didn't mention that. I dread to think what will happen if we have another winter like 1947 or 1963.
@@oliverek7 yes I remember the first half of February 2009 in Leeds was way snowier than anything that has happened since, with the exception of maybe December 2010 (which was snowy for the entire month, not just the first half). I think it was that time when Britain was like an ice rink, and I lost my original Citizen EcoDrive watch when I fell over (and it was never seen again). Maybe the only time I remember falling on the ice properly.
Here is what I do not understand. I am actually from the U.S and grew up in Northern Maine which is about 30 miles from the Canadian boarder. In my neck of the woods, this is considered a dusting. I actually used to take drivers education during storms like this. What I do not understand is this, One I would think that somewhere in the U.K there are no snow plows for days like this. We also after a road gets plowed, a layer of dirt and sometimes rock salt would be put down afterwards. I am wondering if in Britain if the people can get snow tires or studded tires. These type of tires would go through this snow like a hot knife to warm butter. Temperatures in my neck in the woods can reach up to -31 celsius and I have actually have gone to school in these conditions. I am thinking that in Britain one doesn't see weather conditions that you have seen very often and because of that purchasing these items would be a waste of money. I can understand that.
Jacqueline Jordan Yep. That's how it is. It's not worth the money. We don't have 'true' winters. 2009 was a big year for snow and particularly ice as temperatures fell to -20c overnight. It was really beautiful. The ice glistened like crystals. It happens so little that we really don't know how to deal with it. School boilers freeze up and they have to close. We see it as an opportunity for an unpaid holiday as some can't get to work and since it doesn't happen often it's a brilliant excuse to go play in the snow.
