I was born in Spain, my parents are from Equatorial Guinea. I left Spain when I was 24 to come to live in the UK and I'm married to a Nigerian and I have young children who love Spain. To be honest, I love Spain but there are not even a quarter of the opportunities for us Africans there as there are in the UK. I experienced racism all my life, bear in mind that I was born there so no foreign accent or funny business. I was never considered Spanish. When I finish my studies I NEVER got a job that wasn't in a club or pub. No shops or other business would employ me once they saw my photo in my CV (Yes! You must add a photo). Nowadays, I only go there on holidays to enjoy the weather and the food. I might go back there to retire with my money coming from the UK though.

I recommend to stay away from a country that hurt you so much. Instead of going in a holiday to Spain, you should go to the U.S.A. I highly encourage you to visit the South, you will feel at home.

Aunty Flo, thanks for making this enlightening video. I enjoyed watching it. I’ve lived 11 years in the UK and I’m a practicing medical doctor here. I have studied here, married here and worked here, So I have a bit of knowledge of different aspects of the Uk. I would agree with the points about the weather and that it’s not as “touristy” if you’re not visiting London. I would also agree that Spanish people are more friendly, warmer and more bubbly than the UK. But...a few things to add from my limited experience. The UK is really more than London. London is quite expensive, in terms of cost of living and accommodation - I agree. But this is Just like say Madrid or any other capital city in Europe. There’s lots of other cities beyond London or cities close to London, which are brilliant to live with reasonable cost. I would also argue that the NHS has one of the best Health care systems in the world. I have been to a Spanish hospital whilst on holiday and I didn’t think there was any great difference to the system, however I was a tourist so I suppose that means I can’t fully comment on the usual system. I think the health care resources a GP surgery has access to here is dependent on the population in that area (ie older people, children, more disabled, more chronic health problems etc). I am a hospital doctor, and I still maintain that the health care system is top notch. I think we can’t really generalise the whole UK based on a few cities in the country.
@FloChinyere
@FloChinyere 3 года назад
Good to hear that the hospitals are top notch from someone who works there. Everything I said in this video is based on my experience not hearsay and I did issue a disclaimer that I did not use the health service that much. This is my experience as a patient and this perspective is very important too because we are the receivers of the service a.k.a the customers. And I did not generalize. It's impossible for me to sample every location in a country before sharing my experience. 😂 Experiences will always be based on where the person lived.

I never lived in the UK but I have visited London about 6 times and I absolutely love it. London is one of my favorite places to visit though I haven’t travelled much. I love the corner shops, the side walks coffee shops. I love central London. I currently live in the US and one thing I can say is if you want to have a quality life in the US, live in the suburbs. There is high crime rates in the cities. I wish healthcare is free. Apart from that, I love living here. I mind my business and make my small small money…

London is one of my favourite tourist destinations. I just hope and pray it falls into those 3 days of sunshine. My kids were like "Mummy do they even have summer here?" 😂 when I took them to London. It was drizzling and overcast in the middle of summer, so much that we had to go everywhere we wanted to go to like that. They could not understand the rainy summer. I and my colleagues used to go into London almost every weekend like tourists.

If we don’t work ourselves to death in this do called good healthcare system most of this wear and tear to the body could be limited, you will not be needing the hospitals or NHS as much; yes there is something life work balance I will not mention any country as I live in one of them and also walk the hospital floors as a clinician. Sis. Flo I do agree with you that life and work need balance. Me I don tire who wan com make him come , home na home . Usually Denmark where we live is portrayed as a well-developed welfare state that takes care of its citizens from cradle to grave. It is viewed as a realization of Beveridge’s universal social policy principle, where citizenship or legal residence within the territory is a ticket to social rights for everyone. Denmark appears on top of indexes for happiness, human development, equality, and has low levels of poverty and social exclusion.

I think Weather/climate or cost of living is the least of the worries with European countries where Nigerians or even blacks are in minority. If i were to move to any those countries I must prepare to deal with micro aggression and passive aggressive because from my experience with nigerian abroad we don't always have each others back.
@FloChinyere
@FloChinyere 3 года назад
I don't know in which country you had the bad experiences about Nigerians not having each other's back. I have come to know that Nigerians are generally helpful to each other at least in central Europe. I have heard positive stories of people showing new people the way once they arrive: in Germany, the Netherlands ... Here in Spain, once we hear that a new person is in town (sometimes the charitable associations send them to our meeting because it is registered), we invite the person to our meeting and give him/her general guidance, how to settle in, where to submit CVs end give accommodation to those who need it. Some people will also put in a good word for the person at their places of work. Also, the good thing is that in developed countries, all the information is available to the person. Once one overcomes the language barrier (where applicable), the person will have access to that information. Maybe I am saying this because while I welcome all extension of a helping hand when I am in a new place, I do not feel entitled to it. I ask questions where necessary and I usually get the answers I need or a nudge in the right direction. Only a few people will hold your hands and guide you 100% in a new place unsolicited, most likely your family members that already live in the place. This does not mean that the rest are bad people, everyone is busy living their own lives and some people just don't want to impose their guidance on you so they wait for you to ask first.

If you are considering living in a foreign country I would focus on growing a backbone and not being so fragile. Black people are a minority in the west, that is perfectly reasonable, it is not our native land, so expect to be an outsider but don't take it as a 'microaggression' when people are just exhibiting curiosity. Not having a chip on your should about not being white does wonders for eliminating these 'micro aggresions'.
@africancockney8712
@africancockney8712 3 года назад
@@FloChinyere the country I had bad experience is located south east europe. African migrants experiences in central europe is very different from eastern european. Countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria...africans typical get the third class citizenship treatment similarly to the one Badmus Ololade Rafiate recieved. Despite that, migrants are undeterred because these countries offer cheaper living cost and low university fees for skilled migrants and students.
@africancockney8712
@africancockney8712 2 года назад
@@wordsbymaribeja1470 I find it laughable, the arrogance that am an outsider by these same western european countries, built on colonialism and imperialism. How are loaded questions like where are you "really" from? or when did you last visit home? expressing curiosity? Being prickly does not mean having a a chip on your shoulder. From my experience the convert bullies and 'micro-aggressors' often target the peaceful type who wants to be everyones friend.

You might identify as racism some behaviours that are not. We are not fake like americans so we are not very open with unknown people and some say we are rude but that's just our way of speaking. Others also get incommodated when a person stares at them which is something normal here. Once you know a nice Spanish person you won't have to worry about fake friendships and in the security part, well crime rate is similar but Spanish police is way less aggresive, they almost never kill the person who should be arrested even if he/she is a murderer and has weapons.

Juan staring at people is common everywhere. In Nigeria (especially in the villages) people stare at foreigners too even try to talk to them and it's not a bad thing. I don't know why some people see it as a bad thing. It's more often than not, admiration.

@@FloChinyere I have seen some American culture shock videos and they get extremely incommodated by people staring at them and sometimes when the color of their skin is different they say it is racist so that is why I said it. I think is curiosity for the uncommon thing in most cases and people might like your dress or accessories, it does not have to be stare= racist thoughts. It sometimes means it but I don't think most of the times does.
@FloChinyere
@FloChinyere 3 года назад
Yes, I understood you the first time. I was just trying to assure you that it's not just Spaniards that do it. Here in Spain, some people have stared at me and called me exotica especially when I make traditional Nigerian hairdos and dress up in Nigerian clothes during the summer but some people will take that the wrong way. Just like you, I see it as people staring because they are curious, they saw someone different from the people they are used to and because the Spaniards are expressive like Nigerians, they will say something to the person as well. In a place like Norway, they will rather steal glances at you and they will not talk to you because they are not as expressive. So someone visiting Norway may say that they do not stare at people because they do not make it so obvious.

House prices is also way cheaper compared to the UK. The only downside is that there are no jobs especially for black people so it will be difficult to survive. I have also read that there is a lot of discrimination towards black people. The Spanish economy is very weak. UK economy is stronger. The Spanish economy mostly relies on tourists and that is why they have built the cities for tourist attraction. This made me laugh because so much of it is true - I'm from London and love it but I lived/worked in Spain for over a year. The causal attitude is so true! There would be a long line and staff would just carry on at the same pace and chat with each customer. I liked Spain and the property options are way better than in London! But I could not live in Spain for a long time or at least in the city I was in (Madrid as well). I noticed a lot of racism and miseducation about black people. Many people were really lovely to me especially once they heard my accent. They would ask me questions about where I can from and strike up a conversation. Others assumed I was a sex worker because I was black and many Spanish men displayed some horrible behaviour due to this stereotype.
@FloChinyere

Yes, their uneducated older, usually widowed men can have their vices. Capital cities also have their own issues. Where I live, even though fewer blacks and other foreigners live here, they are very aware of foreign cultures. There are lots of cultural integration programmes organised by the local council and the aim is to use such programmes to educate and expose their people to the cultures of people living in their midst. And the turn out is always huge. 👍

@@a.muchemi4360 you seriously have an issue with me coming with a job? That's called planning. That's my own integration plan. My husband did not come to Spain with a job and he can NEVER describe Spain as horrible. It's shocking that you describe Spain as horrible yet you've been here for 20 whole years. It says a lot about you. We should stop with all this victim mentality because it holds us back. If you feel that strongly about Spain, to be honest it's better to go somewhere else. If you hate a land you live in this much, you will never make any progress. I prefer Spain but I will never describe the UK or any other place I have lived in as horrible. If you love a place, you will look for ways to push forward. Everything is about your mindset. In no country will you move to and immediately be integrated. There are so many things to do, studies, exams, qualifications and in the case of Spain, the language too. And not just speak passable Spanish, it must be high level for you to integrate into the job market and do any job you want. I speak very good Spanish but I still feel it's not enough to walk into a government office with this my level of the language and demand a job. I know young girls black girls that study nursing here. I met them at the hospital and I chatted extensively with them and they all have positive stories. The health sector is usually the hardest to break into in a new country but they are doing it! I know blacks who are into politics here and succeeding. I know first generation black immigrants whose children are doing great in sports. If you are good, you are good. Everywhere, immigrants have always had to work harder to get ahead. It's the same in the USA, UK, anywhere in the world. Nothing is handed over to you on a platter of gold. Change your circle of friends so you'll change your mindset and move ahead. Spain is trying for immigrants please. Gave most blacks papers from being illegal and eventually gave them nationality. UK cannot do that for Nigerians even though we are their ex-colony.

@Louloo it seems you do really have a problem with people from other countries living in your own country! Understandable as it is, everyone has a choice of where to live and this liberty is guaranteed under the UNCHR. It is not for you to decide where anyone chooses to reside. Also the responsibility of assent for persons to migrate to any country lies in a state and not its citizens and it is governed by certain conditions.Also the world is a global village therefore its always better to have an open mind which is endeared to acceptance of people. Besides not everyone who resides in a country which isnt their country of origin is there because they're poor or underprivileged; People move for different reasons. Also people from your own country also move to other countries for their own reasons. It's best not to have a mindsetof stereotypes. A lot of Africans are law abiding, peaceful, intelligent, resourceful, financially stable and well traveled and not all of us want to migrate abroad.

@@FloChinyere It is not a matter of changing circle of friends, that is her experience which I also experienced as a physiotherapist. I lived in Mallorca for 10 years, a lot of my friends wanted to study nursing they were not allowed. Their opinion of blacks in the balearic island is 👎. Coupled with the fact that you have to speak their local dialect Mallorquin apart Spanish, though it was not compulsory, but anything that has to do with government or official matter is communicated and written in their own dialect. My sister it was really difficult. In the UK they will get you a translator, no matter the language, as it is counted as part of your human right,but they don't send you in Spain.

@@bukaino2k if anything you should be asking me how I planned my life so perfectly before coming here. I don't know where you got your physiotherapy degree but you can't come to a country with such a degree and not practice for a whole 10 years, a decade! Then blame it on racism. If you got your degree in Nigeria, our degrees do not match up to theirs because you studied in English so you need to school here to measure up. Degrees from Equatorial Guinea measure up here because EG is their ex colony. I took a leave of absence and came to Spain on a visit visa for 6 months to test the waters. By then my husband also secured a UK work permit off mine. We had two options in case I can't integrate here work wise. I cannot come here with my Electronic Engineering degree without a plan. I loved it here and got myself a new job that would allow me live anywhere in the world before moving here. If it were impossible and my husband did not want to move to the UK, we wouldn't have married each other, it's as simple as that for me. Life moves are not random for me. I plan to the T. If you had done your research, you would have gone straight to the UK (if possible) to be honest so I don't get it when people tell me it's because I had a job. I researched and planned my life. Help yourselves people, the government of another country will not do everything for you. The government of your own country cannot even do everything for you. Even in the UK and the USA, people arrive, pack their Nigerian certificates one side, do odd jobs while they study to integrate. And I don't get what you mean by people wanted to study nursing and they were not allowed. I've met several Nigerians, either kids of first generation immigrants or wives that moved here to join their hubbies studying nursing here. I am not taking away from your experience but it's difficult for me to wrap my head around this story that this same country I live in denied people admission because they are black. Biko explain it to me. But then those 10 years sound familiar. Can I take a wild guess that without Spain you would not have ended up in the UK? 😉 If yes, then you got something worthwhile from Spain after all.

Exactly aunty Flo must people think all Africans abroad live in USA ,UK or Canada . When I was in Germany people back home kept asking why I don’t have British accent. I don’t agree with some of the points especially with the tap 🚰. I have the type you’ve got in spain 🇪🇸. Awesome topic . I love many things about living in the UK 🇬🇧
@FloChinyere

That one about accent, eh! Even if one lives in the UK, why is the person expected to suddenly adopt a British accent? Yes, Britico is waking up and slowly moving with the times but these hot and cold water taps can still be found in many homes and hotels. They are still very much in existence that's why this hot and cold water tap mixer: amzn.to/3wWmWEy is selling like hot cakes on Amazon. 😂😭

@@FloChinyere Even in the US. Some older homes still have the separate hot and cold faucets. But just in the older homes that said faucets have not been renovated. I should know, my house built in the early 60s does.

Flo, so I came across your video because I wanted to know if I could freeze plantain. So I agree with somethings you said, like knowing your neighbours, costs of transport, cost of living, when you are on the train. However the UK is a big place and I live in London, and cities tend to be expensive, as for the weather that has always been temperamental. Over the past few years however, we have had mild winters and extremely hot summers. There are so many places to visit in London. Central London is a tourist area, East London so much to do (high end Markets, cafes, shops). And cities you have Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and cities in-between. In general from when you were here the UK and London has changed a great deal. We are experiencing issues with our health service though and that has been on going for a number of years. Spain is full of white English people, every time I have been it is like being in England. When I first went to Spain over 20 years ago (Barcelona to be exact), no one was racists towards us cos I guess from the way we dresses they knew we were tourist but there were very few black people. and the black people we did see were not having it good. On the TV Spanish people paint their face black particularly on shows where they were imitating black singers. I obviously cannot comment on living there. But just so you know as I write this it is 17 degrees, the sky is blue and the sun is out. Yesterday it was 19 degrees🤣❤. But a lot of English people say the quality of life is definitely better in Spain and it helps having the sun above your head.

The uk here i waited 3years to get my fibroids removed cos they said mine was not urgent so i was at the bottom of the list. Not until i could no longer cope with heavy bleeding before i got it removed. Guess what they still did not remove all. And i heard they do so alot. A family friend had to go to naija to have d rest taken out. Infact it had grandchildren.

But there are parts of Spain that are considered unsafe also particularly parts of the large cities. There are parts of Spain that i am sure you would not feel safe going to alone just like the places you mention in the uk.

Flo, I get very upset (mad) when people stop their cars in the middle of the road and chatting with another drivers on the opposite direction, knowing that there are cars behind them. I honk the horn anytime this happened. The worst of all is when they stop at the roundabouts chatting. Chatting with cashiers at the supermarkets, I have gotten used to that.
